OVERVIEW

GhostBed produces a range of mattresses, bed frames, pillows, and other sleep accessories. Formed by Nature’s Sleep in 2010, the brand specializes in all-foam and hybrid mattresses that prioritize temperature control in each model.

The company launched with the GhostBed Classic, a mixed-foam mattress with a competitive price-point. Later additions include the GhostBed Flex, a six-layer hybrid; the GhostBed Luxe, an all-foam model with extra cooling features; the GhostBed 3D Matrix, a hybrid with patented cooling technology; and the GhostBed Natural, a hybrid that emphasizes eco-friendly materials.

GhostBed recently collaborated with renowned tennis player Venus Williams to create the Venus Williams Legend, which comes in all-foam and hybrid options. The Legend is notable for its infrared mineral infusions, which are engineered to accelerate muscle recovery while you sleep. The innovative feature is also designed to improve temperature control by absorbing body heat and releasing it as far infrared light.

We’ll discuss how these features and more impact the mattress’ performance in areas like temperature regulation, pressure relief, support, and motion isolation. We’ll also highlight key differences between the all-foam and hybrid versions.

The Venus Williams Legend is available in two mattress types: all-foam and hybrid.

  • Choose the Venus Williams Legend if … you prefer a quiet mattress with a moderate body hug. The model performs especially well for side sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds or back sleepers under 130 pounds.
  • Choose the Venus Williams Legend Hybrid if … you have trouble staying cool when sleeping and usually find all-foam mattresses too hot. The pocketed coils facilitate airflow better than a dense foam core, while couples can benefit from the hybrid’s solid edge support. The hybrid version particularly excels for side sleepers over 130 pounds and back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

GhostBed Venus Williams Legend Mattress Review Breakdown

The Venus Williams Legend comes in all-foam and hybrid options. Both models have a medium firm feel that registers as a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. This balanced feel can accommodate a range of sleep positions and body types.

The all-foam Legend is slightly thicker at 13 inches, while the Legend Hybrid is 12 inches tall. Each has GhostBed’s proprietary Venus Cooling Cover, which is designed to wick away heat and moisture. The cover is a blend of polyester and REPREVE, a fiber that’s partially made from recycled plastic water bottles.

A 2-inch layer of Venus FIT memory foam features in both models and is notable for its infrared mineral infusions. Infrared technology is thought to promote circulation and speed up muscle recovery by turning body heat into far infrared light. The foam’s open-cell structure and gel infusions are engineered to remove excess heat so sleepers stay cooler.

The all-foam option uses a 2-inch layer of Ghost Bounce foam beneath the Venus FIT layer. This proprietary foam has a springier, latex-like feel that balances out the heavier contouring of the upper memory foam layer.

Instead of Ghost Bounce foam, the hybrid uses 1.5 inches of transitional polyfoam. This responsive layer helps spread body weight evenly to promote good spinal alignment. The foam also has some plushness to cushion pressure points.

An 8-inch high-density polyfoam core stabilizes the all-foam model and helps prevent deep surface indentations.

The hybrid uses a coiled core to reinforce the upper comfort layers. Pocketed springs are designed to curb motion transfer while promoting air circulation. Two additional rows of coils line the perimeter to reinforce edge support. A final base layer of high-density polyfoam is used to increase the hybrid mattress’ overall durability.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Venus Williams Legend has an above-average price-point within the luxury mattress category, but its sturdy construction and innovative cooling technologies may justify the higher price tag for shoppers who value these qualities. Hybrids are generally more expensive than foam models, so it’s not surprising that the Legend Hybrid is priced higher than the all-foam option.

Both versions are available in twin XL, queen, king, California king, and split king sizes. The standard twin and full sizes are not offered for either model.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Both Venus Williams Legend models isolate motion very well. Substantial foam comfort layers act as shock absorbers, while the solid polyfoam core also limits motion transfer.

Even with the added bounce of a coiled core, the hybrid version also provides very good motion isolation. The pocketed coils are designed to limit motion transfer, so movement on one side of the bed shouldn’t be felt on the opposite side.

Pressure Relief

The Legend delivers standout pressure relief. The Venus FIT memory foam cushions pressure points on the hips, shoulders, and spine. Firmer transitional layers help alleviate tension by evenly contouring the body.

Optimal pressure relief depends on choosing the appropriate model based on your sleep style and body weight. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds and back sleepers over 230 pounds might sink excessively on the all-foam model, potentially causing aches and pains. These sleepers will likely prefer the hybrid version.

Temperature Control

Foam: 3/5, Hybrid: 4/5

GhostBed prioritizes temperature control in all of its mattresses, and the Venus Williams Legend is no exception.

The Venus Cooling Cover is made with breathable polyester and recycled fibers. The open-cell memory foam contains gel infusions designed to minimize heat buildup, which can be an issue with traditional foams. GhostBed’s proprietary mineral infusions are engineered to regulate temperature by absorbing and releasing body heat as infrared light.

People who sleep especially hot will likely feel more comfortable on the Legend Hybrid. The extra space in the coiled core promotes airflow better than a dense polyfoam core. Added bounce from the springs also helps prevent sleepers from sinking into the mattress, making heat buildup less of an issue.

While the hybrid sleeps somewhat cooler than the all-foam model, the latter still regulates temperature better than most foam mattresses.

Edge Support

Foam: 3/5, Hybrid: 4/5

Solid edge support minimizes premature sagging while increasing usable surface area of a mattress. Without a sturdy steel core, foam models are more prone to slackening at the edges.

The all-foam Legend minimizes this tendency with its polyfoam support core. Since sagging increases with weight, sleepers over 230 pounds may experience a rolling-off sensation as the mattress ages. Couples may also notice more surface impressions at the sides over time.

People who regularly sit up in bed may want to opt for the hybrid, which offers stronger edge support. A double row of coils reinforces the perimeter, so the sides should resist sagging over time.

Ease of Movement

Foam: 3/5, Hybrid: 4/5

The more responsive a mattress is, the easier it is to change positions. Some sleepers feel stuck in foam mattresses, especially if deep-hugging memory foam is used.

Sleepers should find it easier to move on the Legend compared to the typical all-foam mattress. Even though the memory foam conforms to the body, the responsive layer of Ghost Bounce foam below keeps sleepers from sinking excessively.

Unsurprisingly, the hybrid version rates slightly higher in this category. The bounce from the springs permits easier movement, and the transitional polyfoam layer also helps prevent sleepers from feeling trapped inside the memory foam.

Sex

The conduciveness of a matttress to sex is highly subjective, though edge support, temperature control, and responsiveness generally factor prominently in the equation. The Legend performs well in these areas, so most couples should find the mattress well-suited to sex.

Each version has a fair amount of responsiveness, though couples may prefer the added bounce of the hybrid’s pocketed coils. However, the hybrid’s innerspring core could generate some noise during sex, although this is more of an issue as the mattress ages.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is that new mattress smell that occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reach the air. Any mattress made with foam will off-gas, but some emit stronger odors than others. Shoppers should note that off-gassing isn’t considered harmful.

Neither version of the Legend has a particularly strong off-gassing smell, and any odors emitted after unboxing the mattress should dissipate within 24 to 72 hours. Airing the mattress out in a well-ventilated room can speed up the process.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
Our testers found that both models of the Venus Williams Legend perform well for side sleepers in any weight bracket. The 2-inch layer of plush memory foam cushions the hips and shoulders, which can be acute pressure points for side sleepers. The Ghost Bounce and transitional foam layers also minimize tension by promoting even spine alignment.

Side sleepers under 230 pounds are especially suited to the all-foam model’s deeper contouring. The slightly sturdier hybrid is more appropriate for side sleepers over 230 pounds who need extra support but not as much cushioning.

Back Sleepers:
The Legend and Legend Hybrid offer a balance of contouring and support, which back sleepers need to maintain a straight spine. The medium firm (6) feel conforms to the body while still keeping it on an even plane.

The hybrid performs well for back sleepers across all weight categories. Transitional polyfoam and a robust coiled core help minimize sagging beneath the torso. The memory foam comfort layer eases tension without permitting too much sinkage.

Most back sleepers should also feel supported on the all-foam Legend thanks to its high-density polyfoam core. However, those over 230 pounds may experience buckling beneath the midsection, especially as the mattress wears over time. The hybrid is better equipped to counter sagging under extra weight.

Stomach Sleepers:
Stomach sleepers generally need a firmer mattress to prevent the midsection from dipping excessively, which strains the lower back and spine. Since sinkage is relative to weight, stomach sleepers over 230 pounds usually need an especially firm mattress to maintain the natural curve of the spine.

Our tests indicate that the Legend Hybrid resists sagging under the midsection for stomach sleepers in any weight range. The steel coils and transitional polyfoam help keep sleepers from collapsing into the softer memory foam.

The all-foam Legend is more of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers. Foam mattresses tend to sag over time, especially under greater weight. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds may develop pressure points on the neck, shoulders, and spine from sinking excessively.
