Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
The Bear Pro Hybrid mattress is an all-around quality bed. Its hybrid design combines a strong coil system with lasting cushioning foam. It’s a strong pick for average weight side and back sleepers.

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers typically prefer a softer mattress that prevents pressure points on the hips and shoulders. While a firm mattress isn’t always the first choice for this position, the Bear Pro Hybrid performs well for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
Plush memory foam cradles the hips and shoulders, while denser polyfoam helps the spine stay level. The strong coiled core keeps the hips from sinking lower than the upper body. This is especially crucial for side sleepers over 230 pounds, as they need extra reinforcement below the midsection.
Pressure relief for side sleepers under 130 pounds is marginal at best on the Bear Pro Hybrid. They don’t compress the layers much, allowing pressure points to form on the hips and shoulders.
Back Sleepers
The Bear Pro Hybrid’s consistent support is an excellent match for back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. The upper memory foam layer gently cradles sleepers without overly conforming to the spine. Adaptive polyfoam and sturdy pocketed coils prevent your midsection from sinking, which helps the hips and shoulders stay on the same plane.
A firm feel and reinforced edges ensure that back sleepers feel supported anywhere on the mattress. We found the mattress to be very durable, so premature sagging shouldn’t be an issue, even for back sleepers over 230 pounds.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers are prone to neck and spine strain if a mattress is too soft. With its firm feel and even surface, the Bear Pro Hybrid is a supportive choice for people between 130 and 230 pounds. Our testers in this weight group reported that they didn’t feel tension in their necks or spines during use.
Stomach sleepers above and below this weight range didn’t have as much success — the mattress felt too firm for those under 130 pounds and too plush for our testers above 230 pounds.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
“Firm hybrids are often too bouncy for me, but the Pro Hybrid scored pretty highly during our movement and kettlebell drop tests.” – Logan
Our testers found that the Bear Pro Hybrid isolates motion well, even with its spring support core. The hybrid mattress’ pocketed coils move independently, so they also prevent movement from traveling across the bed.
Couples and co-sleepers shouldn’t notice many vibrations when their partner or pets move on the mattress. Combination sleepers should also have fewer disturbances when they adjust positions.
Mattresses that isolate motion well aren’t always easy to move on. The Bear Pro Hybrid is noteworthy because it combines both above-average motion isolation and ease of movement.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
“For its firm feel, this bed delivers a surprising amount of pressure relief. The polyfoam and gel memory foam are effective impact absorbers, which can help ease hip and shoulder pain.” – Mary
The Bear Pro Hybrid relieves pressure for a range of body types and sleeping positions. The quilted cover and plush memory foam keep the surface from feeling too rigid. Adaptive polyfoam absorbs impact and redistributes body weight evenly across the mattress. The pocketed coil core promotes good sleep posture by reinforcing the hips and midsection.
One caveat is that the side sleepers under 130 pounds on our team noted that they did not receive enough cushioning on the hips and shoulders. These sleepers would generally be more comfortable on a softer mattress.
Temperature Control
7.5
/ 10
“The Bear Pro Hybrid delivers on its promise to sleep cool. Our temperature tests indicated that its foam doesn’t stay hot for long, so it shouldn’t absorb much body heat.” – Jackson
The Bear Pro Hybrid has enhanced cooling technology to help the mattress stay temperature-neutral. The breathable Celliant cover is formulated to absorb and release excess body heat. Gel-infused memory foam in the top comfort layer is intended to further dissipate heat. Sturdy, pocketed coils circulate air throughout the core and keep sleepers closer to the surface where there’s more airflow.
Edge Support
7.5
/ 10
“The perimeter reinforcement gives this model enough of a boost at the edges that anyone without mobility limitations should be able to get in and out of bed without much issue.” – Colin
Surface impressions tend to develop first around the perimeter of a mattress, especially for co-sleepers or those who regularly sit up in bed. But the Bear Pro Hybrid’s reinforced edges provide robust edge support. Its firm (7) feel resists deep compression throughout the entire mattress, so our testers felt secure anywhere on the bed. Solid edge support also gives couples more space to spread out.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
“The Pro Hybrid has a balanced feel that’s not excessively bouncy or restrictive. It’s a good Goldilocks option for someone looking for a bed that’s decently responsive and motion-isolating. ” – Brad
The Bear Pro Hybrid has a responsive surface with moderate contouring, so our testers didn’t have much trouble adjusting positions. Plus, the pocketed coil core aids movement and makes getting in and out of bed easier.
The firm (7) feel prevents the deep sinkage that can restrict movement and strong edge support enables sleepers to utilize the entire bed surface and get in and out of bed easily. Keeping all that in mind, this isn’t an exceptionally bouncy bed. If that’s what you prefer, think about a hybrid with latex instead of foam.
Off-Gassing
7
/ 10
“I got the characteristic new mattress smell when I opened this bed, but it went away pretty quickly.” – Jeremy
Mattress foams contain tiny particles called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They can emit a chemical-like smell when exposed to air in a process known as off-gassing. The smell can be unpleasant, but it isn’t considered dangerous.
The Bear Pro Hybrid releases some odors when new, but they should disappear within a day or two. Bear uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, so they’ve been tested to meet strict VOC emission standards. We recommend airing out the mattress in a ventilated room if you’re sensitive to the smell.
With a total profile of 10 inches and a firmness rating of 7 on the 10-point firmness scale, the Bear Pro Hybrid has three distinct layers and features a quilted Celliant-polyester cover, which uses a thermo-reactive fiber designed to turn body heat into infrared energy. This process is intended to regulate temperature while promoting muscle recovery.
The comfort system starts with body-cradling memory foam that’s infused with gel engineered to dissipate excess heat. A layer of adaptive polyfoam below promotes spinal alignment by distributing body weight evenly across the mattress. It also prevents sleepers from sinking deeply into the mattress’ core.
A pocketed coil core adds bounce while reinforcing the upper comfort layers. Reinforcement around the perimeter boosts edge support, increasing usable surface area. Each pocketed coil moves independently, so motion shouldn’t ripple across the bed.
GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certifications show that the mattress meets strict standards for volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions and material safety.
The Bear Pro Hybrid is competitively priced. Cutting-edge cooling features, solid performance ratings, and complimentary pillows help justify the price tag. But if you’re on a budget, you may want to consider Bear’s more affordable all-foam mattress.
