U.S.-based Muse Sleep is a direct-to-consumer company founded in 2011 that produces a select range of sleep products. Apart from its flagship mattress, Muse also sells a pillow, a travel pillow, and a mattress protector.

The 12-inch Muse mattress is an all-foam mattress designed with a focus on keeping cool. It’s available in three firmness options: soft, medium, or firm. Muse provides a short sleep quiz on its website to help each sleeper choose the best mattress feel for them according to body type, preferred sleeping position, and other factors.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers are generally on the softer side. Most side sleepers benefit from the plush surface of the soft Muse mattress. The close-conforming foams help to relieve pressure points in the hips and shoulders for sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. They also form a cradle around these wider body parts that helps promote natural spinal alignment.

Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds may also find that the medium Muse mattress strikes a nice balance of cushioning and support. By contrast, sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, and those above 230 pounds in particular, are more likely to feel comfortable on the firm Muse mattress. These sleepers require a slightly firmer surface to keep the spine on an even plane.

Back Sleepers

The soft Muse mattress is ideal for back sleepers under 130 pounds, and the firm Muse mattress provides the perfect feel for sleepers over 130 pounds. Couples looking for a compromise can settle on the medium Muse mattress, which should suit all body types.

Back sleeping naturally aligns the spine, but some qualities are needed to encourage healthy spinal alignment when sleeping in this position. The mattress should be supportive enough to prevent sagging in the hips and other heavy areas, and plush enough to keep pressure points from forming. Contouring foams in the Muse mattresses reduce pressure points and fill in the space under the lumbar area to keep the lower back in line, while the polyfoam core provides a stable support system for the spine.

Stomach Sleepers

The soft Muse mattress gets top marks for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, while those over 230 pounds tend to prefer the firm model. The main requirement that stomach sleepers should look for in a mattress is a firm surface that won’t allow the hips to sink in too far. Mattresses that allow sagging in the midsection can cause back pain.

Lighter individuals don’t exert as much pressure on the mattress and they won’t sink in as far. Thus, the soft Muse mattress is perfectly capable of keeping the spine aligned in these sleepers. On the other hand, stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds may find that the soft and medium models fail to provide adequate support under the hips. The harder surface of the firm Muse mattress does a better job of keeping the spine aligned.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

As with most memory foam mattresses, the Muse does a great job of preventing motion transfer from one side to the other. The soft and medium models are particularly adept at this thanks to their plusher foams, which conform more closely to absorb movement.

Sleepers on the firm model might notice some disturbance when a partner changes positions or gets in and out of bed, but this should be fairly minimal. The transitional layer also provides an additional buffer, and overall most couples experience minimal disruptions overnight.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

Sleepers of most body types and preferred sleeping positions should find that there’s a Muse mattress that relieves pressure points for them.

Side sleepers and people who weigh less than 130 pounds benefit from the extra cushioning of the soft model. The plush foams in this mattress reduce pressure points by contouring around the curves of the body.

The medium mattress conforms less closely but offers a balanced feel that distributes body weight for back sleepers and those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

In turn, the firm mattress provides a more robust surface. This model doesn’t conform as closely and may feel too firm to lighter sleepers. However, it works well for stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds. Among these sleepers, the mattress helps keep the spine on an even plane and reduces pressure build-up.

Temperature Control

5/10

Temperature control is a major sticking point for all-foam mattresses, but the Muse mattress uses several techniques to reduce heat retention. The most notable is the phase-change material in the cover. Phase-change material responds to changes in temperature, keeping the mattress surface cool-to-the-touch for longer. Using a thin mattress protector instead of a mattress pad can help you capitalize on this effect.

Muse uses open-cell and relatively low-density foams in the comfort layers, meaning they are more breathable than traditional memory foam. Some of the foams are also infused with gel that is designed to draw heat away from the sleeper.

The medium and firm Muse models don’t conform as closely, which leaves more room for airflow around the sleeper’s body. These models will sleep cooler than the soft model, which may trap more heat, especially for individuals who sink in further.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Edge support in the medium and firm Muse mattresses is on par with most other all-foam mattresses. The high-density polyfoam base layer helps limit sagging around the edges when sleeping near the edge of the bed. However, a polyfoam support core doesn’t provide the sturdiness of coils, and it may not hold up very well when sitting on the edge of the bed.

The comfort layers in the soft mattress compress considerably under pressure. This may cause feelings of roll-off as sleepers approach the edges. Couples would do better to choose the medium or firm options so that both people can feel confident about using their entire side of the bed.

Ease of Movement

5/10

The Muse mattress is constructed with low-density foams that have a relatively quick response to pressure, making it fairly easy to move around on the mattress. While they don’t have the responsiveness of a latex or innerspring mattress, the medium and firm Muse mattresses should pose no impediment to most combination sleepers.

By comparison, the soft Muse mattress hugs the body more closely, keeping sleepers “in” instead of “on” the mattress. For some, this can be uncomfortably restrictive and even lead to the feeling of being stuck in the bed. People who weigh more than 230 pounds, in particular, will find it easier to switch positions on the medium or firm mattress.

Off-Gassing

5.5/10

The Muse mattress contains synthetic foams that may release some off-gassing odors when the mattress is first unboxed. These should dissipate within a few days in a well-ventilated room.

Off-gassing is a normal occurrence with foam mattresses. It’s the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coming in contact with the air. The foams used in the Muse mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. This means they are low in VOCs and free of heavy metals, ozone depleters, and other nasty substances.

People who are very sensitive to smells should know that off-gassing can happen with any mattress that contains synthetic foams. Latex and hybrid mattresses are a better choice if this is a concern.

Muse Mattress Review Breakdown

The Muse mattress is 12 inches tall, which is slightly above average for an all-foam mattress. The extra height is due to the thick comfort layer section and the transitional layer, which provide a deep cradle that helps reduce pressure points in side sleepers. It may be worthwhile to invest in deep-pocketed fitted sheets to accommodate the high profile of the mattress.

The jacquard chenille cover is made of polyethylene and polyester knitted yarns, woven with phase-change material that makes it cool to the touch. It is removable and can be machine-washed in cold water and tumble-dried. The bottom cover is made of a rayon and polyester blend. The mattress also features a rayon-cellulose fire sock and a non-slip bottom.

In total, the Muse mattress comprises four layers of foam. The mattress is available in three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. These equate to a medium, medium firm, and firm, or a 5, 6, and 7-8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, respectively. As a general rule, the soft mattress is best suited to side sleepers and people under 130 pounds, while the firm mattress is best for stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds. The medium mattress is a good compromise for partners with different body types who share the bed.

The makeup of each layer differs slightly between firmness levels. The soft mattress has a top layer made of 2 inches of open-cell polyfoam. The second layer comprises 2 inches of gel-infused polyfoam with a quicker response to pressure. These foams contour quite closely to the sleeper’s body, leading to the feeling of sleeping “in” as opposed to “on” the mattress.

The medium mattress also has a 2-inch layer of open-cell polyfoam in the top layer, followed by 2 inches of responsive memory foam. The second layer of foam in this model is slightly firmer than the soft mattress and contours less closely, for a balance between sleeping “in” and “on” the mattress.

The firm mattress has 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam in the top layer. This foam is denser, but it is still fairly resilient. Following this is a second 2-inch layer of memory foam. The firmer foams in this model mostly keep sleepers on top of the mattress.

All Muse mattresses then have a 2-inch transitional layer of polyfoam and a 6-inch high-density polyfoam base layer. The transitional layer provides a buffer to prevent sleepers from coming in contact with the denser base layer, and works to prevent motion transfer. Meanwhile, the base layer adds long-lasting support and stability. The base layer is denser than many competing models and helps promote proper spinal alignment in sleepers of all body types.

The Muse mattress is made in the U.S. and the foams are produced using a variable pressure foaming process which is considered more environmentally friendly.

Warranty

Improper use, handling, installation, or care of the mattress will void the warranty. This includes using the mattress without proper support.

Defects not covered under the warranty include normal wear and tear, signs of physical abuse or damage, damage that occurred while moving or storing the mattress, mold, mildew, theft, vandalism, criminal damage, or damage caused by smoke, fire, animals, or “acts of God.” Where loss is covered by an insurance policy, the company accepts no responsibility for warranty coverage.

The warranty does not cover mattresses used commercially, the sides of the mattress, minor imperfections, allergies, sensitivities, or personal comfort preferences. Additionally, Muse Sleep may void the warranty at its discretion. Once a customer has claimed warranty coverage for a mattress, no further warranty claims may be made under that warranty.

Customers should register warranty claims in writing within five days of the incident and must be able to provide a copy of the purchase receipt and a photo if possible. Muse Sleep will replace the mattress with a similar model at its discretion. Customers may also elect to upgrade to a better model by paying the difference.
