Mend Sleep is a direct-to-consumer mattress company that specializes in crafting innovative models with advanced materials. The Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress is the company’s premier model. This hybrid mattress has two firmness options built in. Flipping the comfort layer transitions the mattress from a medium soft (4) to a medium firm (6) feel.

The Adapt Mattress is a great option for sleepers whose firmness preferences may change, such as growing children, those with aches and pains, and anyone whose weight or sleep position vary over time. Couples seeking a balance of motion isolation and bounce also frequently appreciate the Adapt Mattress. Between its two firmness levels, this model can accommodate sleepers of most weight groups and preferred sleep positions.

Mend Sleep also produces the 12-inch Renew Mattress and the 12.5-inch Bliss Mattress, both of which are Euro-top hybrid models. The Renew has a medium feel, and the Bliss is medium soft. While these models lack the Adapt’s flippable comfort layer, their affordable price-points may appeal to budget shoppers.

We’ll cover the Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress’ construction, features, benefits, and performance to help you shop for a mattress that meets your needs.
The Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress can be medium soft (4) or medium firm (6) depending on which side of the comfort layer is facing up.

Choose Medium Soft if:Choose Medium Firm if:
– you weigh less than 130 pounds and sleep on your side. The softer memory foam on the medium soft side provides notable pressure relief for lighter individuals.– you weigh more than 130 pounds. Across all sleep positions, most individuals over 130 pounds prefer the medium firm side of the mattress. Stomach and back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds also tend to favor this side’s extra support.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Medium Soft Side: 4 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 3 / 5

Both sides of the Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress absorb enough movement to reduce disturbances caused by a partner changing positions during the night.

The memory foam comfort layer and support foam comfort and transition layers dampen vibrations. Movement that reaches the pocketed coil core also shouldn’t spread significantly since the springs work independently of one another.

That said, the medium soft side of the comfort layer isolates vibrations to a greater extent than the medium firm side. With the plusher memory foam facing up, very little motion travels across the surface. The medium firm side’s support foam is more responsive, which may lead to some motion transfer.

Pressure Relief

Medium Soft Side: 4 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 3 / 5

Thanks to its flippable comfort layer, the Adapt Mattress can provide appropriate pressure relief for most sleep positions and body types.

The medium soft side’s memory foam comfort layer provides exceptional pressure relief for most side sleepers under 130 pounds by conforming closely to the body and redistributing its weight.

When the medium firm side of the comfort system faces up, the memory foam provides slightly less pressure relief. The firmer support foam comfort layer still cradles the body, but it doesn’t hug as closely as memory foam. This level of conforming is beneficial for many side sleepers over 130 pounds, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers.

Temperature Control

Medium Soft Side: 3 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 4 / 5

With a breathable hybrid design and several materials engineered for cooling, the Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress’ temperature regulation is on par with many hybrid models.

With the medium soft side of the comfort layer facing up, the mattress may retain some heat. This side uses memory foam, which often sleeps hot due to its density and close hug. However, the Adapt Mattress’ memory foam uses an open-cell structure and a gel infusion intended to limit heat retention by allowing body heat to dissipate.

The medium firm side uses support foam instead of memory foam. It tends to stay a bit cooler since sleepers don’t sink as deeply.

A pocketed coil core allows for excellent airflow, which can further aid in temperature control regardless of which side of the comfort system you prefer. Additionally, the breathable Emana fabric cover is designed to feel cool to the touch while letting air circulate.

Edge Support

Medium Soft Side: 3 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 4 / 5

Like the majority of hybrid models, the Adapt Mattress boasts good edge support.

The edge of the pocketed coil core is reinforced, stabilizing the mattress’ perimeter and allowing sleepers to use more of the bed. However, this support is less apparent on the medium soft side due to the contouring of the memory foam. The medium firm side’s support foam better limits sinkage, giving its edge an especially sturdy feel.

Ease of Movement

Medium Soft Side: 3 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 4 / 5

A bouncy feel and strong support make the Adapt Mattress easy to move on, simplifying position changes during the night. This is due in large part to the pocketed coil core.

The medium firm side of the comfort layer uses support foam with minimal hug and sinkage, facilitating movement. The memory foam on the medium soft side contours more closely and responds more slowly to changes in pressure. That said, most sleepers should be able to move around on this mattress without any problems.

Sex

Medium Soft Side: 3 / 5

Medium Firm Side: 4 / 5

The Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress provides a good balance between bounciness and cushioning when it comes to sex.

The coil core’s springy support and reinforced edge allow couples to move around comfortably.

With the medium soft side of the comfort layer facing up, the surface provides more cushioning and traction. However, the contouring may restrict movement. On the other hand, the medium firm side’s support foam offers easier movement and stronger edges for a greater usable surface area.

Off-Gassing

Some mattresses release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air when removed from its packaging. VOCs are generally considered harmless, but they may produce an unpleasant smell.

Since the Adapt Mattress contains synthetic foam and is compressed for shipment, shoppers can expect a mild initial odor. The bed’s breathable construction should allow the smell to dissipate within a few hours to a few days.

Side Sleepers

Because of the Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress’ flippable comfort layer with two firmness levels, it can accommodate side sleepers of most weight groups.

Each side has its benefits. On the medium soft side, 2 inches of gel memory foam mold to a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders to reduce pressure buildup. On the medium firm side, support foam adjusts to the sleeper’s shape with less hug and sinkage. Additionally, the support foam transition layer and the pocketed coil core add to the cradling effect while providing support.

A side sleeper’s weight impacts which firmness level best supports spinal alignment. Side sleepers under 130 pounds typically prefer the medium soft side of the Adapt Mattress’ comfort layer. They should sink in just enough to ease pressure without sacrificing spinal alignment. The medium firm side is generally better for side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, as it prevents their hips and shoulders from sagging.

Back Sleepers

The Adapt Mattress’ medium firm side provides a good balance of cushioning and support for most back sleepers. The top comfort layer’s support foam lets the hips sink in just a bit without sagging, supporting the natural curvature of the lower back.

While most back sleepers of all body types prefer the medium firm side of the comfort layer, the medium soft side is suitable for some back sleepers under 130 pounds. However, those who weigh more than 130 pounds may find that their hips sink too deeply into the medium soft side’s memory foam, which can misalign the spine and cause pain.

Stomach Sleepers

Most stomach sleepers benefit from a mattress that is firm enough to prevent their abdomens from sagging, and the Adapt Mattress’ medium firm side can do just that. While this side of the comfort layer has enough cushioning to reduce pressure buildup, the support foam also limits midsection sinkage that could otherwise strain the lumbar region. Most stomach sleepers should get the support they need to sleep comfortably.

In general, the medium soft side of the comfort system is less optimal for stomach sleepers. However, those who weigh less than 130 pounds may enjoy the additional softness and contouring of this side’s memory foam comfort layer. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds are likely to experience significant sinkage around their midsections on the medium soft side, which could contribute to lower back discomfort.

Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress Review Breakdown

The Mend Sleep Adapt Mattress is a hybrid model with a flippable comfort layer, allowing sleepers to select between a medium soft (4) and a medium firm (6) side by unzipping the cover and flipping the mattress.

The Emana fabric cover is designed to provide cosmetic benefits, promote muscle recovery, and enhance temperature regulation. The cover is also removable for easy washing.

The medium soft side of the comfort layer uses 2 inches of memory foam that contours to the sleeper’s body to reduce pressure buildup. An infusion of gel and an open-cell structure are intended to counteract the heat retention common in close-conforming memory foam. The medium firm side of the comfort layer uses 2 inches of support foam for a firmer, more responsive feel with less hug.

Under this versatile comfort system, 1 inch of support foam serves as the transition layer. It helps align the spine, limit motion transfer, and prevent the sleeper from sinking in against the core. The 8-inch pocketed coil core adds bounce and breathability, and its reinforced edges make more of the mattress’ surface fully usable. Since the coils can move independently of each other, they also limit motion transfer and deepen the contouring. A final base layer uses 1 inch of support foam for greater stability.

The total mattress profile measures 14 inches.
