Brooklyn Bedding is one of the pioneers of the bed in a box concept, with over 25 years in the industry. The company offers a variety of sleep accessories, including pillows, sheets, blankets, and foundations, and a robust mattress line with models to accommodate virtually any sleep style, position preference, and weight group.

The Plank Mattress is an all-foam model designed to be exceptionally even and supportive. The Plank Hybrid is similar, but it uses a coil core to provide extra bounce. This flippable model has a firm side (7) and an extra firm side (9). Each side includes a quilted top layer and polyfoam comfort system for deep compression support with minimal loft. A 6-inch core of individually wrapped coils supports both sides of the bed. The mattress measures 13.25 inches thick.

Because of its firm and extra firm options, the Plank Hybrid is particularly suitable for sleepers who like to sleep on top of their mattress as opposed to sinking into it. This firmness offers top-notch ease of movement and edge support, helping sleepers adjust positions and utilize the entire surface of the mattress. Additionally, an optional cooling panel can be sewn into both sides for an additional charge. This panel is made of phase change material designed to feel cool to the touch and maintain a consistent temperature.

We’ll analyze the Plank Hybrid Mattress’ construction, performance, and policies to help you decide if this model is the right option for you.

Plank Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The firm (7) side of the Plank Hybrid starts with a 1.5-inch quilted cotton-microfiber blend layer over 1 inch of responsive polyfoam and 2 inches of high-density support polyfoam. These layers offer some give with little to no hug, enhancing the ease of movement. Because sleepers don’t sink into this mattress much, getting in and out of bed and changing positions should be easy.

While the extra firm (9) side has a similar construction, its comfort system is thinner. It starts with a .75-inch quilted cotton-microfiber top and 2 inches of high-density support foam. With fewer foam layers and a thinner quilted top, the extra firm side is denser and less flexible. For sleepers who prefer to sleep on top of a mattress, the extra firm side provides little body contouring and excellent edge support. This side of the Plank Hybrid allows sleepers to occupy every part of the mattress without feeling the need to lay in the center to avoid the edges.

The core of the mattress is 6 inches of individually wrapped coils, which gives the Plank Hybrid a responsive feel. Both sides offer an optional phase change material cooling panel that can be sewn in. This is intended to enhance temperature regulation.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Firm Side: 2/5
Extra Firm Side: 1/5

Motion isolation is important for those who share a bed because it reduces the likelihood that a sleeper’s movements will disturb their partner.

Because of its firm and extra firm options, thin comfort systems, and bouncy coils, the Plank Hybrid rates lower in motion isolation than most hybrid models. The firm side of the mattress absorbs slightly more motion than the extra firm side, but some vibrations will likely travel across the surface of either side of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Firm Side: 2/5
Extra Firm Side: 1/5

A mattress that conforms to the body can relieve pressure by spreading out its weight more evenly. Because of its two-layer comfort system and extra quilting, the firm side of the Plank Hybrid offers some pressure relief. The extra firm side has minimal contouring, so side sleepers will likely experience significant pressure buildup around their hips and shoulders. However, this even support may be ideal for stomach sleepers above 230 pounds.

Temperature Control

With Cooling Panel: 5/5

A breathable mattress can help ensure a cooler and more comfortable night’s sleep. The Plank Hybrid offers top-notch temperature control thanks to its minimal hug and ample airflow.

While the standard option should remain a comfortable temperature for most sleepers, those prone to overheating can also add an optional cooling top panel for an additional charge. This layer is made from phase change material designed to regulate temperature.

Edge Support

Firm Side: 4/5
Extra Firm Side: 5/5

Because of its firmness, the Plank Hybrid has great edge support. The extra firm side of the mattress is particularly supportive around the perimeter, allowing users to comfortably sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Strong edge support also makes getting in and out of bed easier and offers more usable surface area.

Ease of Movement

Firm Side: 4/5
Extra Firm Side: 5/5

The Plank Hybrid, particularly the extra firm side, performs exceptionally well in ease of movement because of the firmness level. Due to the lack of contouring, sleepers can change positions and move across the bed without sinking into it. High levels of responsiveness make this mattress suitable for sleepers who like to sleep on top of their bed or those who feel restricted by the close hug of softer models with ample foam comfort systems.

Firm Side: 5/5
Extra Firm Side: 4/5

Because the Plank Hybrid performs well in edge support and ease of movement, it’s also conducive to sex. Both the firm and extra firm sides of this model are springy and responsive, which many couples prefer. Increased edge support also allows for the use of more of the mattress surface.

While either side should be conducive to sexual activity, the firm side may be preferable since the extra firm side could feel rigid to some couples.

Mattresses with foam layers typically produce some off-gassing due to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from manufacturing. These compounds are generally harmless but can have an unpleasant chemical smell. Because it is a hybrid model with a breathable core, the Plank Hybrid should air out relatively quickly. If you’re sensitive to smells, plan to give your mattress between 24 to 72 hours for the odor to dissipate.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
Side sleepers are typically most comfortable on a mattress that relieves pressure by contouring to the body. The Plank Hybrid includes a firm and an extra firm side, which may not be suitable for side sleeping due to limited cradling.

Side sleepers under 230 pounds may find that the Plank Hybrid does not have enough give to relieve pressure and promote spinal alignment. Those who weigh over 230 pounds might sleep comfortably on the firm side because their hips and shoulders should sink slightly into the quilting and two layers of polyfoam without sagging.

Back Sleepers:
Back sleepers traditionally need an even sleep surface that conforms to the body to support the hips and lumbar region.

The firm side of the Plank Hybrid should provide a good balance of contouring and support for back sleepers over 130 pounds. Those in this weight group who prefer a sturdier feel may also like the extra firm side. However, back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely find both the firm and extra firm sides too rigid, which could lead to lower back discomfort.

Stomach Sleepers:

Stomach sleepers often experience a sore neck and/or back when sleeping on a mattress with inadequate support. Because of the potential for strain, it’s important to find a mattress that is firm enough to prevent midsection sinkage while still offering enough cushioning for comfort.

The firm side of the Plank Hybrid performs exceptionally well for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, and the extra firm side also earns high marks from stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. The sturdy construction limits sinkage, while the quilting provides subtle cushioning. For stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, the firm side of the Plank Hybrid offers even support, but the extra firm side may be too firm.
