Diamond Mattress is a family-run company that has been in the mattress industry for four generations. The Intention Hybrid is an affordable model that appeals to sleepers looking for well-rounded performance that can offer up consistent comfort and support.

In addition to the Intention Hybrid, Diamond offers five other mattress options:

  • The Grateful Hybrid, a slightly less expensive option that uses gel-infused memory foam in its comfort system and is available in three firmness levels.
  • The Faith Hybrid, a higher-priced bed with advanced cooling features and three firmness options.
  • The Transformation Hybrid, which has a coil-on-coil design, a layer of memory foam, and the option for extra features to enhance temperature regulation. Like the other hybrids, it is offered in three firmness levels.
  • The Rally Foam mattress uses copper-infused foam and gel-infused memory foam and is offered in two firmness choices.
  • The Rally Hybrid has the same comfort system as the Rally Foam but uses a coil-based support core.

For shoppers who are looking for a dependable hybrid mattress that gives sleepers a blend of the cushioning of memory foam and the bounce of innerspring coils, the Intention Hybrid is worth a closer look. Our review goes through the ins-and-outs of this mattress, examining its sizing, pricing, and performance, to help you decide if it’s an ideal match for your bedroom.

For any given person, both sleeping position and body weight can be considered to help determine whether the Intention Hybrid is their optimal mattress.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is the most common position, and it usually calls for a mattress that is between medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) and has at least mild contouring. The central reason for this firmness preference is that side sleepers have distinct pressure points at their hips and shoulders that must be properly accommodated. To do so, a mattress must be firm enough to keep these joints from sinking out of line with the body but soft enough to prevent sharp impacts. Sleepers under 130 pounds typically need a softer bed to get the right amount of cushioning while those over 230 pounds need a bed that’s firmer.

Considering these needs, the medium model of the Intention Hybrid works best for most side sleepers. The soft can suit some people under 130 pounds while the firm may be best for some over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, the right feel of a mattress normally falls between medium (5) and firm (7) with at most mild contouring. With these characteristics, a mattress can tailor to the curve of the lumbar spine, but if there’s too much contouring or sink, the midsection can drop too far into the bed and out of alignment with the lower back. As with side sleepers, the higher a person’s body weight, the better suited they are to a mattress of a higher firmness level.

For the Intention Hybrid, the firm model is the top option for the majority of back sleepers. The soft and medium models are too soft except for back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

For stomach sleepers, an even firmer mattress is usually the best bet. Specifically, they do best with a mattress ranging from medium firm (6) to firm (8) that has only light conforming. Like with back sleepers, the biggest problem area for stomach sleepers is around the lower back. If the abdomen sags too deeply into a soft bed, it creates potential pressure on the lumbar spine from the body being pulled into a U-shape. A firmer sleeping surface also keeps stomach sleepers from feeling stifled or suffocated by their bed.

Consequently, the firm version of the Diamond Intention Hybrid is the top pick for stomach sleepers of any weight. The medium version may be supportive for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Firm: 6 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Medium: 7 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Plush: 7 / 10

On the whole, the Diamond Intention Hybrid gets an average grade for motion isolation. Though it has a memory foam layer in its comfort system that helps cut down on motion transfer, that layer is only 1.5 inches thick. The layers around it, made with fiber fill and polyfoam, do little to isolate motion. That, and the bounce from the coils makes it easier to feel a ripple effect when a co-sleeper turns over or gets out of bed.

Among the three firmness options, the most motion isolation is found in the soft version since it allows for more sink and contouring while the firm, with reduced conforming, will allow more of the bounce to spread across the mattress surface.

The average motion isolation offered by the different models of the Diamond Intention Hybrid is enough for most couples. However, if one or more bed partners is easily awoken, it may cause occasional disturbances.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Firm: 6.5 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Medium: 7.5 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Plush: 8 / 10

Sleepers can expect roughly average pressure relief on the Intention Hybrid, which, for many sleepers, is enough to deliver sufficient cushioning and encourage spinal alignment.

The main way that the mattress relieves pressure is through its memory foam layer because of this material’s ability to compress in proportion to the weight that is applied to it. This means that memory foam can give extra cushion to higher-impact areas of the body, such as the hips and shoulders of people sleeping on their side.

This strength of memory foam, though, is countered by the fact that the memory foam layer is not particularly thick. In addition, the surrounding layers are more limited in their ability to contour to the body or provide enhanced support to pressure points.

Temperature Control

7/10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Firm: 7.5 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Medium: 7 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Plush: 6.5 / 10

Temperature control is above-average in the Diamond Intention Hybrid. With lots of space around the coils, air can move naturally through the support core, keeping heat from building up in the thickest part of the mattress.

Although memory foam has a reputation for heat retention, the formulation of it in the Intention Hybrid is specially shaped to permit greater ventilation. In addition, the breathable fiber fill above the foam and the CoolTouch cover provide a degree of moisture wicking and comfort cooling.

Because sleepers will sink more deeply into the soft model, more airflow can be restricted around the skin. As a result, this firmness option is most likely to be related to issues with sleeping hot.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Plush: 3 / 5

Medium: 4 / 5

Firm: 4 / 5

Edge support is above-average in the design of the Diamond Intention mattress, but it is significantly greater in the medium and firm models. In all three firmness options, a high-density polyfoam encasement goes around the support core to reinforce the edge. The two-inch transition polyfoam layer also generates a stable feel that checks excess sinking near the perimeter.

On the soft version, however, the significant plushness of the top layers makes it easier to notice deep compression around the edge that can create a bit of instability when sitting or sleeping on that part of the mattress.

Ease of Movement

6/10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Firm: 6.5 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Medium: 6 / 10

Diamond Intention Hybrid – Plush: 5.5 / 10

In most cases, it’s easy to move on top of the Intention Hybrid, earning it an above-average rating in this category. The bounce that comes from the coils facilitates a quick rebound of the mattress when you want to adjust your sleeping position. Additionally, the transition polyfoam helps prevent a quicksand-like feeling that could come from dipping too far into the bed.

The exception, though, is on the soft model. Because that version allows for more significant sink, it’s easier to feel like you’re in instead of on the mattress, which can impede movement.

Off-Gassing

6.5/10

There are very few problems with off-gassing from the Intention Hybrid. The most common cause of off-gassing — commonly associated with a “new mattress smell” — is foam. As the Intention Hybrid only has a total of 3.5 inches of foam, it doesn’t give off much of an odor.

Customers might still notice a light smell that lasts for at most a few days, but it’s generally considered harmless and usually fades within a few hours.

Diamond Intention Mattress Review Breakdown

The Diamond Intention Hybrid utilizes a number of different materials to create a sturdy mattress with solid all-around performance. An in-depth understanding of its strengths and weaknesses starts by examining how it is put together.

The Intention Hybrid has a cover made with a fabric called CoolTouch that works to pull moisture away from the body and promote a cool temperature. Quilted into this fabric is 1.5 inches of soft fiber fill that creates an inviting padding on the top of the bed.

The next layer is 1.5 inches of memory foam. This foam has a convoluted, or egg-crate-shaped, design that allows air to move through it and reduce its heat retention. This layer helps cushion the body through moderate contouring while simultaneously cutting down on motion transfer across the mattress surface. Beneath the memory foam is a 2-inch layer of transition polyfoam. This material has only light pressure-relieving properties, but it provides greater stability to the mattress and reduces excess sinking into the bed.

The support core of the Intention Hybrid is composed of pocketed innerspring coils. Pocketed coils have more ability to tailor to the body’s weight and pressure than traditional hourglass springs. In addition, the coils are built into distinct zones to make them stronger underneath heavier parts of the body. The coils are encased in a high-density polyfoam that goes around the perimeter in order to fortify it and make it easier to sleep or sit near the edge of the mattress.

The mattress is offered in soft (3), medium (5), and firm (8) options. All three versions have the same interior construction, but the foam materials are formulated to be harder or softer depending on the model selected.
