Founded in 1855, Charles P. Rogers produces a range of hybrid mattresses, bed frames, and bedding accessories. The New York-based company has showrooms on the East Coast, but mattresses can also be purchased online. Charles P. Rogers currently offers four hybrid collections: the Hospitality, the Estate, the Estate SE, and the Lifetime.

The Hospitality is the brand’s most modestly priced series and includes the St. Regis and the Biltmore. Both hybrids feature thick memory foam comfort layers and an adaptive coiled core. The Biltmore is the softer of the two models and uses gel-infused memory foam instead of traditional memory foam.

The next price tier is the Estate collection, which comes in three firmness options. All versions feature a natural fiber quilted top, Talalay latex and foam comfort layers, and a responsive coiled core.

Designed with longevity in mind, the Lifetime is the brand’s most expensive mattress. The model comes in three firmness options and incorporates natural latex, aerated foam, nanocoils, and a zoned coiled core. Flippable and replaceable components are intended to increase the mattress’ lifespan. A lifetime warranty covers the spring system, which is a policy unique to this model.

We’ll review the Estate SE, which is a more customizable version of the Estate. The two-part hybrid features replaceable comfort layers and a flippable bottom support core. The Estate SE collection comes in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7).

We’ll delve into the Estate SE’s materials and construction method to illustrate how it performs. We’ll also discuss the pros and cons of each firmness option, so you can determine the best mattress for you.

The Estate SE collection is available in three firmness levels. The Estate SE Luxe has a medium (5) firmness level, the Estate SE-GL has a medium firm (6) feel, and the Estate SE is firm (7). Ideal firmness depends on your sleep position, body weight, and personal preference.

Choose the Estate SE if:Choose the Estate SE-GL if:Choose the Estate SE Luxe if:
you are a back or stomach sleeper, as the firm (7) feel promotes a straighter spine. Side sleepers over 230 pounds can also enjoy a balance of cushioning and support. If you tend to sleep hot, the SE offers slightly better temperature control than the other models.you are a side, back, stomach, or combination sleeper. The balanced medium firm (6) feel suits a wide range of sleep styles and body types. The responsive surface can also benefit sleepers who change positions frequently.you are a side sleeper, weigh less than 230 pounds, or experience chronic aches and pains. The plusher medium (5) feel offers extra cushioning, which helps prevent pressure points from forming. At 14.5 inches thick, this model is ideal for those who like high-profile beds. The thicker comfort layers absorb noise and motion well, which many co-sleepers appreciate.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping typically requires a softer mattress that generously cushions the shoulders and hips. Our testers found that the SE-GL and SE Luxe both perform well for side sleepers in any weight bracket. Both feature memory foam comfort layers that conform to the body and encourage good sleep posture.

The SE’s firm (7) feel might not make it the best mattress for side sleepers under 230 pounds, potentially causing aches and pains the next morning. Sleepers over 230 pounds naturally sink more, so they are better suited to the SE’s firmer surface.

The SE Luxe is an especially good fit for side sleepers under 130 pounds, as the plusher medium (5) feel cradles the hips and shoulders more than the firmer models.

Back Sleepers

We found the Estate SE to be a solid design for back sleepers across the board. The sturdy coiled core helps keep the heavier torso area from dipping too much, which can distort spinal alignment. The softer latex and memory foam comfort layers gently cradle lighter body parts like the shoulders and legs.

The SE and SE-GL perform well for back sleepers regardless of weight. Sleepers up to 230 pounds should get enough support to align the spine. The SE Luxe’s softer feel is generally supportive enough for back sleepers up to 230 pounds. Those over 230 pounds should experience less sagging with one of the firmer models, making them a good mattress for a heavy sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically need the firmest surface of all positions to keep the midsection from sinking too much. Our tests showed that the Estate SE supports spinal alignment for stomach sleepers. The latex comfort layer moderately hugs the body, so sleepers shouldn’t sink into the mattress’ core. Sturdy coils also help distribute body weight across the mattress.

The SE has the most solid surface, making it especially fitting for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. The SE-GL’s medium firm (6) feel performs particularly well for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, though the SE Luxe is also a strong choice. However, sleepers above 230 pounds run the risk of sinking too much on the SE Luxe, which can strain the lower back.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

SE: 6 / 10

SE-GL: 6 / 10

SE Luxe: 8 / 10

All three firmness options isolate motion well, so excess movement should not ripple across the surface.

The memory foam comfort layers in the SE-GL and SE Luxe absorb motion and help offset the latex’s bounce. Pocketed coils in the support core help minimize motion transfer, while the surrounding latex and polyfoam layers act as shock absorbers.

The SE Luxe slightly outperforms the SE and SE-GL in this category because it uses a thicker layer of memory foam. Active sleepers or couples more sensitive to disturbances might prefer the Luxe for this reason.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

SE: 6 / 10

SE-GL: 6 / 10

SE Luxe: 8 / 10

The memory foam comfort layers in the SE-GL and SE Luxe conform to the body and cushion sensitive pressure points. While the SE doesn’t use memory foam in its comfort system, the soft Talalay latex lightly cradles the body to alleviate tension. Robust coils also restrict sagging beneath the torso, which can throw off spine alignment.

The SE Luxe offers better pressure relief thanks to its thicker memory foam comfort layer. That said, our tests showed that the SE and SE-GL performed better for stomach and back sleepers over 230 pounds. These sleepers need more support to align the spine and prevent pressure buildup.

Temperature Control

8.5/10

SE: 8 / 10

SE-GL: 6 / 10

SE Luxe: 6 / 10

Uncomfortable heat retention can sometimes be an issue with mattresses that use memory foam. The Estate SE-GL and SE Luxe counteract this tendency with gel infusions, which are designed to remove excess heat. Pocketed coils also promote air circulation better than a solid foam core.

Talalay latex has an airy structure that naturally regulates temperature well. The SE only uses latex in the comfort system, so we found it has slightly better temperature control than the SE-GL and SE Luxe, which include memory foam. All three models should not retain too much heat though, even for couples and hot sleepers.

Edge Support

7.5/10

SE: 8 / 10

SE-GL: 8 / 10

SE Luxe: 6 / 10

Robust edges help maintain even mattress support by preventing sagging along the sides. Solid edge support is important for couples or sleepers over 230 pounds.

The Estate SE has reinforced edges, allowing more usable surface area for sleepers. Flipping the mattress can also prolong consistent support by preventing deep surface impressions.

With a firm (7) feel, we found the SE to have slightly superior edge support than the SE-GL and SE Luxe.

Ease of Movement

8.5/10

SE: 8 / 10

SE-GL: 8 / 10

SE Luxe: 6 / 10

Many people prefer hybrids to all-foam mattresses because of their extra bounce. All three firmness options rate well in this category, so sleepers shouldn’t feel trapped inside the comfort layers.

Talalay latex has a springy feel that helps prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. The coiled core makes changing positions easier, both when sleeping and during sex.

The SE Luxe isn’t quite as responsive because its thicker memory foam gives a deeper body hug. Even so, sleepers shouldn’t sink to the point of feeling stuck.

Off-Gassing

8.5/10

SE: 8 / 10

SE-GL: 8 / 10

SE Luxe: 6 / 10

Mattresses with foam typically emit a chemical-like smell when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released, known as off-gassing. While the odors may be unpleasant, they are not considered harmful.

Any new mattress smell should be pretty mild with the Estate SE models. Odors usually disappear within a few days of the mattress being unpacked, or sooner in a well-ventilated room.

Charles P. Rogers Estate SE Mattress Review Breakdown

The Estate SE is a dual-section hybrid that combines latex and foam layers with a pocketed coil core. Three versions are available, each with a different firmness level and height. The SE Luxe is 14.5 inches thick and has a medium (5) firmness; the SE-GL is 14 inches with a medium firm (6) feel; and the SE is 13 inches thick and has a firm (7) feel. Each model uses similar materials.

A soft cotton knit cover incorporates Sorona, a strong and flexible natural fiber made by DuPont. A 2-inch layer of natural Talalay latex is quilted inside the cover to form a plush Euro-top. The SE-GL and SE Luxe also include gel-infused memory foam, increasing the mattress’ height and softness. A zippered microfiber bottom cover allows sleepers to replace the comfort layers as needed.

The support core starts with a 1-inch layer of natural latex designed to spread body weight evenly throughout the mattress. The latex is manufactured using the continuous pour method, which enhances durability.

Next are 8 inches of sturdy 14-gauge pocketed coils. Each coil has a 2-inch diameter and moves independently, helping to reduce motion transfer. Extra turns in the coils are engineered to be more responsive than traditional springs.

A 1-inch layer of CertiPUR-US-certified polyfoam lines the perimeter and base for extra stability. The core has breathable quilted fabric side panels with handles on each side. The bottom mattress is flippable, so sleepers can choose between a softer or firmer feel. Flipping the mattress periodically may also increase its lifespan by reducing uneven wear and surface impressions.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Hybrids tend to be more expensive than other mattress types because of their complex constructions. The Estate SE models are pricier than average even within the luxury mattress category, but they are also designed to last longer than a typical mattress. The versatility of interchangeable layers and a reversible core may also justify the higher cost for some shoppers.

Each of the mattresses in the Estate SE collection is available in the six standard mattress sizes. Height varies slightly based on the model selected, but all have above-average profiles.
