There are benefits to sleeping on a mattress made with natural latex. Luma incorporates latex in the construction of each of its mattress models. The company launched in 2015, building on extensive research to develop mattresses that help improve sleep quality.

The company has four mattress options: the flagship Luma, the Natural Latex Hybrid, The Hybrid Slumber System, and the Latex Slumber System. The Luma mattress, which we cover in this review, is the brand’s most affordable option. Of the four models, it has a simpler construction. The Natural Latex Hybrid and slumber systems all include a pillow top with additional customization options.

The Luma mattress is a latex hybrid that is available in three firmness options. The mattress has a natural latex comfort layer with pocketed coils for support. The Luma offers moderate contouring and top-notch pressure relief. Its breathable construction will likely appeal to hot sleepers.

We’ll cover the construction and performance of the Luma, along with verified customer feedback. With three firmness options to choose from, there are special considerations for each sleeping position and body type. We’ll break down everything you need to know before purchasing the Luma, including company policies and shipping information.

Luma Mattress Review Breakdown

The Luma is a latex hybrid mattress. With an 11.5-inch profile, the mattress is considered standard height.

It is available in three firmness options, which allows sleepers to choose their preferred comfort level. Firmness is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, or extremely soft to extremely firm. The Luma is available in plush (4), medium (6), or firm (7-8). All three firmness options have the same basic three-layer construction but differ in the density of latex used in the comfort layer.

The plush option has a softer, more conforming comfort layer that allows sleepers to sink into the mattress. The medium firmness balances comfort and support. The firm option has a dense comfort layer of latex that gives sleepers the feeling of sleeping on, rather than in, the mattress. For those who are unsure of which firmness option to choose, Luma has a comfort guide quiz with personalized recommendations.

The Tencel cover of the Luma mattress is breathable and moisture-wicking. It helps air circulate through the mattress to keep sleepers comfortable. The comfort layer consists of two inches of natural latex with an open-cell structure. This layer is aerated to increase airflow throughout the comfort layer and prevent heat retention. Latex gently contours to the shape of the body to relieve pressure without restricting movement.

Beneath the comfort layer is eight inches of pocketed coils. The coils are individually encased to respond independently to pressure and minimize motion transfer. This support base has a reinforced perimeter of coils for added edge support. A one-inch layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the coils and helps isolate motion.

The Luma is also available in a latex and foam construction, which has a high-density foam support base instead of pocketed coils.

Prices and Sizing

Of the four models that Luma offers, the flagship Luma mattress is the most affordable. It is also competitively priced for a hybrid mattress. While a queen size natural latex hybrid often costs close to $2,000, the Luma mattress is well below that price point. Luma occasionally offers promotions that further discount the price of the mattress.

Natural latex is durable, which helps prevent sagging and indentations over time. This gives the Luma a longer lifespan and makes it an appealing choice for value-minded shoppers.

The Luma is available in standard sizes twin through California king. The 11.5-inch height fits standard sheets.

Mattress Performance

  • Motion Isolation

Hybrid mattresses with coil support bases have ample bounce, which can affect how well the mattress isolates motion. The Luma does not isolate motion as well as hybrid models with memory foam comfort systems. Motion transfer is a possibility due to the pocketed coils and buoyant latex. This is the case for each firmness option.

Latex is resilient, meaning it springs back to its original shape quickly once pressure is removed. Memory foam is slower to return to shape and absorbs movement better as a result.

That said, there are a few factors that help the Luma isolate motion and prevent sleep disturbances. The coils are pocketed to respond independently to pressure. This helps them prevent movements from rippling across the bed. A layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the coils and helps minimize motion transfer. While latex is not as effective as memory foam, it still absorbs motion to a certain extent.

Smaller movements are less likely to be felt on the Luma, but couples may feel their partner getting in and out of bed.

  • Pressure Relief

Generally, latex relieves pressure by moderately conforming to the shape of the body. With three firmness options to choose from, sleepers can choose the Luma mattress that is best for them.

All three firmness levels offer pressure relief, but each is better suited for certain body types and sleeping positions. Personal comfort preferences should also be taken into consideration.

Generally, the plush option relieves pressure for those who weigh less than 130 pounds and sleep on their side. The softness of the mattress conforms more closely, so sleepers can sink into the mattress for pressure relief.

The medium firmness may provide better pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. This firmness balances moderate contouring with full-body support for pressure relief.

The firm option should offer top-notch pressure relief for back and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds.

  • Temperature Control

The Luma offers impressive temperature regulation in all three firmness options. It is rated on par with, if not slightly higher than, similar hybrid models. Each layer of the mattress is breathable.

The Tencel cover wicks away sweat. Beneath the cover is an aerated layer of natural latex, which increases airflow around the body. Even the plush Luma mattress has ample airflow despite conforming more closely.

The coils in the support base add airflow throughout the mattress and prevent heat retention. These components make the Luma a good fit for hot sleepers, especially compared to an all-foam mattress.

  • Edge Support

    Plush: 3/5, Medium Firm: 4/5

The coil base of the Luma has a reinforced perimeter. This provides solid edge support, especially in the medium and firm Luma models.

In the plush model, the comfort layer compresses more easily. This is most noticeable when sitting on the edge of the bed. Those who sleep near the edge of the bed should still feel supported.

Sleepers who need more edge support may want to opt for the medium or firm options. A firmer comfort layer will not compress as much. This results in better support when sitting and sleeping near the edge of the bed.

Natural latex resists sagging. This ensures consistent edge support over time.

  • Ease of Movement

    Plush: 4/5, Medium Firm: 5/5

It is easy to move around on the Luma mattress. Latex is buoyant and springs back to shape when pressure is removed. This helps facilitate movement. The coil base adds bounce to the mattress, so users can easily change positions as needed.

The plush option conforms more closely, so it is rated slightly lower than the medium and firm options. That said, sleepers should not feel restricted. There is still plenty of bounce from the coils and latex.

The medium and firm options are highly rated. The combination of dense latex and bouncy coils offers better ease of movement than other hybrid models.

For combination sleepers, this makes it easy to change sleeping positions throughout the night.

  • Sex

    Plush: 4/5, Medium Firm: 5/5

Most couples will find the Luma sufficient for intimate activity. The mattress has plenty of bounce, so it is easy to change positions as needed.

The mattress offers top-notch edge support in the medium and firm options. This results in ample support so couples can use the entire surface area of the mattress.

There is a potential for noise from the coils, but this is minimal. The coils are pocketed and reinforced with a layer of high-density polyfoam.

  • Off-Gassing

There is an initial odor to the Luma mattress, but it is minimal and should dissipate quickly. Off-gassing is usually the result of synthetic foam releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. The Luma has a thin layer of polyfoam in the support core. The foam used is CertiPUR-US certified and low in VOCs. The natural latex comfort layer and coil base add airflow to the mattress to help dissipate any odors.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers: Side sleepers benefit from a contouring mattress for pressure relief. The Luma is highly rated by side sleepers for this reason. The latex comfort layer offers moderate contouring, and customers can select the firmness level that best suits their body types and preferences.

For side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, the plush Luma offers excellent pressure relief. Sleepers in this category can sink into the mattress and have their hips and shoulders cushioned. Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds also give the plush option high marks, though some may prefer the medium or firm mattress for better support. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds risk sinking into the plush mattress excessively and benefit more from the medium and firm options.

The medium firmness is good for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, but most prefer the plush option. It is an excellent choice for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, with a balance of contouring and support.

The firm option could cause pressure points to develop for side sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. For side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, the firm mattress cushions shoulders and hips enough while supporting the spine.

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers generally keep a neutral posture as they sleep, but benefit from lumbar support to keep the spine aligned. With three firmness options to choose from, the Luma is a good option for back sleepers. The combination of latex and pocket coils results in moderate contouring and impressive back support.

The plush option is ideal for back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, as the comfort layer conforms to the shape of the lower back. The coils prevent sinking in too deeply. Those who weigh more than 130 pounds are more likely to sink into the mattress and find it less supportive.

The medium firmness is rated highly for back sleepers in each weight category, as it conforms enough for pressure relief while keeping sleepers from sinking in. That said, those who weigh more than 130 pounds may prefer the firm option.

The firm option is buoyant and supportive. Sleepers find they are sleeping on, rather than in, the mattress. This keeps them from sinking in and helps keep the spine aligned.

Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers often prefer a firm mattress to support their hips and abdomens. This helps keep the spine aligned and reduces pressure on the lower back. The Luma mattress is highly rated by stomach sleepers, and most prefer the medium or firm options.

The plush option offers support for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The latex comfort layer cushions the shoulders and chest while the coils prevent sinking in too deeply. Those who weigh more than 130 pounds will likely find the plush option is too soft.

Stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds benefit from the contouring and support of the medium firmness. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds generally prefer the firm option.

The firm option is highly rated by stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, and by those who weigh more than 230 pounds. The dense latex comfort layer prevents sinking in excessively and properly supports the hips and abdomen.
