The Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid mattress is a flagship product for the Simmons mattress company. It’s a hybrid mattress, meaning it uses a combination of metal coils and foam layers to create a comfortable and durable design. It’s a bed with a “medium” feel, around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The Beautyrest Hybrid is moderately priced for a hybrid model.

Simmons is one of the oldest mattress companies in the United States, with a founding date in the 1870s. They offer many different mattress models, but their flagship product line is the Simmons Beautyrest line. This Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid mattress review will focus specifically on the Beautyrest Hybrid model, although there are several quality mattresses under the “Beautyrest” name, such as the Beautyrest Black luxury hybrid.

While the majority of Simmons mattresses are still sold in physical mattress stores, a few select models are now available for purchase online. The Beautyrest Hybrid is one of the few Simmons mattresses that are available for online purchase to be shipped to your door.

We’ll cover all you need to know about this mattress to help you decide if it’s right for you. We’ll discuss details of construction, materials, performance, company policies, and more.

Side Sleepers

Most side sleepers will find the Beautyrest Hybrid to be a very comfortable and supportive mattress. The combination of foam layers and pocketed coils mean that there is enough give to allow your shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress, but enough support to keep your spine aligned. Typically, side sleepers will find that this mattress provides good pressure relief, contouring, and support, resulting in a comfortable sleep experience overall.

Because of its medium firmness rating, the Beautyrest Hybrid will be best suited to side sleepers under 230 pounds. For those over 230 pounds, the mattress still scores well, but some individuals may be better off on a firmer bed.

Back Sleepers

The majority of back sleepers will prefer a medium or medium firm feel. This mattress falls at about a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which may or may not be firm enough for back sleepers. The support of this mattress should be sufficient for most, so much of this guidance comes down to personal preference on how firm you like your bed to feel.

Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely feel that this mattress is plenty firm. Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds will find that the firmness is adequate to provide support, but some will prefer a firmer feel. For back sleepers of over 230 pounds, this mattress may not feel firm enough, and it may struggle to provide the support needed for proper spinal alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers will typically prefer firmer beds. Particularly if you carry more weight around your midsection, you may find that medium firmness beds allow for excessive sinkage around the hip area. Inadequate support in the hips can lead to improper spinal alignment, which may contribute to back pain and other issues.

Since this is a medium mattress in terms of firmness, it may have too much give for many stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds should fare well on the Beautyrest Hybrid, but stomach sleepers who weigh more than that may wish to seek out a firmer mattress.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

A bed with good motion isolation will allow you to change positions and get in and out of bed without significantly disturbing your partner. This is an important factor for anyone who shares their bed with a partner, child or pet – but it’s not a major factor for single sleepers.

The Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid performs very well in this category. By utilizing pocketed coils (which move independently from one another), this mattress eliminates a lot of the motion transfer issues that are common in traditional innerspring beds.

In addition to the pocketed coils, the Beautyrest Hybrid’s multiple foam layers also help to minimize motion transfer. Foam tends to absorb motion, keeping movement on one side of the bed from affecting the opposite side.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

Pressure relief refers to a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure on target areas of the body, including common pressure points. Generally, the most important zones to target include the hips, shoulders, and neck.

The Beautyrest Hybrid provides very good pressure relief. It’s a moderately firm bed, which allows for adequate conforming to increase comfort, while maintaining the support needed for proper spinal alignment.

Three inches of memory foam help to cradle the body, relieving pressure. The underlying pocketed coils move independently from one another, allowing for extra support – and extra give – where it’s needed most.

Temperature Control

6.5/10

Temperature control refers to a bed’s ability to maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature through the night. This is a noteworthy factor for everyone, but it’s particularly important for those living in hot climates, and people who tend to sleep hot.

The Beautyrest Hybrid performs decently in this category, at a rating of 2/5. The mattress uses a relatively thick layer of memory foam, which tends to trap body heat. Although cooling gel is added to the foam, our testers still found that this bed retained more body heat than the average hybrid mattress.

This mattress conforms well to the body, which is great for comfort. However, it also leads to a warmer feel and more body heat retention. The included coils do help to improve airflow, but overall, temperature neutrality is a weaker point of this mattress.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Edge support refers to the strength and support of a mattress around the outer perimeter. It’s most important for those who have some difficulty getting in and out of bed, or folks who like to sit at the side of the mattress.

The Beautyrest Hybrid scores well for edge support. Its thick layer of pocketed coils, surrounded by rigid perimeter foam, provides a good foundation for the mattress. The three inches of memory foam do cause some sinkage around the edge when pressure is applied, but overall the edge support on this mattress is solid.

Ease of Movement

6/10

Ease of movement refers to how easy a mattress makes it to move around or change positions. This is an important factor for older folks who may experience discomfort when changing positions at night. Typically, all-foam mattresses have less ease of movement than innerspring beds, as foam tends to allow the body to sink in more.

As a hybrid mattress, this model falls square in the middle. The three foam layers do conform to the body, which can mean that a bit more effort is required to change positions. But the underlying support of the coils, combined with the mattress’ medium firmness rating, firms up the feel of the bed and makes it easier to move around.

Off-Gassing

6.5/10

Off-gassing refers to a brief period in which new mattresses release an unpleasant odor. The odor is a normal byproduct of the manufacturing process, and off-gassing typically only lasts for 1-3 days after you first set up the bed.

The Beautyrest Hybrid scores well for off-gassing. Some odor will be present due to the inclusion of memory foam. However, this mattress ships in a large, mattress-sized shipping container, unlike most online mattress options which ship compressed in small boxes. Because this model is not shipped compressed, some of the off-gassing should already have taken place before it reaches your home.

Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid is a quality and comfortable mattress with moderate firmness. On our firmness scale of 1-10, the Beautyrest Hybrid is about a 5. This makes it a versatile bed that will be well suited to a wide variety of sleepers and sleep styles.

This is a hybrid mattress, which means it combines metal coils with layers of foam. The coils provide the underlying support layer, while three unique layers of foam improve comfort and responsiveness. Keep in mind that this design is one-sided, so it cannot be flipped over like traditional mattresses. To extend its lifespan, you can rotate the mattress every six months – but it should not be flipped.

The Beautyrest Hybrid uses a thick layer of pocketed coils as its main support layer. Pocketed coils are metal springs that are individually wrapped in fabric. Because they are separated, they are able to move independently from one another, providing a more responsive feel and more customized support. The coil support layer is approximately 9.5 inches thick. A rigid foam perimeter surrounds the coil layer, helping to improve edge support and maintain the overall shape of the bed. In general, hybrids tend to provide better edge support than all-foam mattresses, and the Beautyrest Hybrid is no different.

A three-part comfort system is made up of two layers of gel-infused memory foam, and one layer of standard polyfoam comfort foam. Simmons uses a cooling gel in their memory foam layers to help improve the bed’s ability to retain a cool and comfortable temperature. This is an important feature, as traditional memory foam tends to sleep hot.

Lastly, a quilted fabric cover tops the mattress, protecting it from damage. The cover features a special cooling material to help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature. This cover is integrated into the mattress, so it is not removable or washable. For anyone looking for extra protection, adding a mattress protector cover is a good idea.
