Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Side sleeper

Talks in sleep (like a lot)

The Beautyrest Hybrid checked just about all of the important boxes for me as a side sleeper between 130 and 230 pounds. It felt balanced and comfortable, and provided great support for my hips and shoulders.

Combo sleeper

I found that both of the Beautyrest Hybrid’s firmness levels provided adequate support for my body. It was easier to move around on the firmer model, and this was helpful when I wanted to switch between sleeping positions.

Side sleeper

I thought that the Beautyrest Hybrid was solid across the board but didn’t really shine in any one category. The performance varies quite a bit depending on the firmness level, so it’s important to pick the model that matches your needs and preferences.

Side Sleepers

Our testing found that the Beautyrest Hybrid can be a solid fit for most side sleepers, although the optimal firmness varies by body weight.

Side sleepers need a mattress that can minimize impact against their shoulders and hips while, at the same time, avoiding excessive sinkage that can interfere with spinal alignment.

For side sleepers up to 230 pounds, the medium medium (5) model offered the best results. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds may want to consider the more supportive medium firm (6) design, which earned higher ratings from our testers in this weight group.

Back Sleepers

Based on our testing, the medium firm Beautyrest Hybrid is supportive for the majority of back sleepers. Some back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds preferred the slightly softer medium option.

When lying on your back, it’s important that your mattress provides an even surface so that your spine can remain in a neutral position. On the softer Beautyrest Hybrid, back sleepers in our testing tended to experience too much sinkage around their midsection. The medium firm version provided a good mix of stability and light cushioning for the lumbar spine.

Stomach Sleepers

Among stomach sleepers, the best ratings were awarded to the medium firm Beautyrest Hybrid. While many of these testers said that the mattress provided adequate support, some felt that there was still too much contouring from the memory foam to truly maximize their comfort.

Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers need a flat and even sleep surface. This prevents their midsection from sinking into the mattress and causing spinal misalignment. The medium model was too plush for most stomach sleepers in our testing, but the medium firm version provided more stability and spinal support.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8 / 10

Plush: 8.5 / 10

Medium Firm: 7.5 / 10

“On the firmer model, you can definitely notice some vibration from a bed partner’s movement, but there’s very little motion transfer on the plush model.” – Colin

Our testing team gave strong ratings for motion isolation to the medium version of the Beautyrest Hybrid, and a slightly lower ratings for the medium firm model.

The springs in the base of the mattress generate bounce, some of which is absorbed by the memory foam at the top of the bed. The more you sink into the memory foam, the less likely you are to notice movement on the other side of the mattress.

For most couples, the Beautyrest Hybrid offers sufficient motion isolation, but people who are easily awakened may experience some sleep disruptions on the medium firm design

Pressure Relief

8.5 / 10

Plush: 9 / 10

Medium Firm: 8 / 10

“On both versions of the Beautyrest Hybrid, the memory foam layers cradle the heaviest parts of the body to reduce pressure buildup.” – Mary

During our testing, the Select Hybrid earned solid marks for pressure relief. Many sleepers felt that the highest degree of pressure relief came from the medium model because it contours more closely to the body.

That deep hug tends to be more meaningful for side sleepers and people who have sharp pressure points near their joints. Back and stomach sleepers often get better support from a firmer surface with less contouring, so they may feel less pressure on the medium firm Beautyrest Hybrid.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

Plush: 7 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

“The Beautyrest Hybrid has some design elements that are meant to reduce heat buildup, and they definitely cut down on overheating — especially on the firmer model.” – Brad

We found that there was more heat buildup on the medium Beautyrest Hybrid compared to the medium firm model. When you sink deeply into memory foam, it can trap heat around your skin, especially as the foam itself starts to warm up. That drives increased heat retention on the plush model.

While the medium firm design may absorb and trap some heat, this buildup is unlikely to affect most sleepers. However, hot sleepers may be wary about feeling too warm on the Beautyrest Hybrid or any other mattress with thick layers of memory foam.

Edge Support

6.5 / 10

Plush: 6 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

“I felt that the edge support was a bit subpar for a hybrid mattress. You can feel quite a bit more compression and sinkage when you apply weight to the edge of the mattress.” – Colin

While the edges of the Beautyrest Hybrid weren’t unstable per se, they lacked the robust feel that you find around the perimeter of many hybrid mattresses.

When sitting or sleeping near the edge, you can feel the memory foam layers compress under your body. There’s some pushback from the springs, but the perimeter still feels noticeably weaker than the center of the mattress.

The lack of edge support is most pronounced on the medium model. However, unless you depend on a very firm perimeter, this issue is unlikely to dramatically affect your satisfaction with the Beautyrest Hybrid.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

“As a combination sleeper, I would have liked for it to be easier to move around on this mattress. But the ease of movement was sufficient, especially on the firmer model.” – Mary

The memory foam in the top layers of the Beautyrest Hybrid contours to the body, which can make it more difficult to adjust your position on the mattress. There is deeper contouring on the medium model, so it received a lower rating in this category.

Ease of movement matters most to combination sleepers and others who like to frequently adjust their sleep posture. For these sleepers, the medium firm model is better at facilitating movement.

Durability

7 / 10

As a hybrid mattress that combines layers of memory foam and coil support, the Beautyrest Hybrid offers decent longevity. Though memory foam doesn’t necessarily lend itself to durability, the mattress also includes a polyfoam layer, which is a more durable material. Combined with the fact that it’s a somewhat firm mattress, you can expect around the standard seven-year lifespan.

Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Beautyrest Hybrid is 12 inches tall and constructed with a combination of different materials. It comes in two firmness options, each of which has a very similar design.

In both designs, the cover is made with a breathable and stretchy knit fabric. Beneath the cover, the top two layers feature memory foam, a material known for its ability to adapt to the body’s weight and posture in order to cushion joints and relieve pressure points. One of these memory foam layers is infused with a gel designed to help the surface resist heat retention.

Beneath the memory foam is a transitional layer of polyfoam that is firmer and helps reduce sinkage. The firmer model has two layers of this transitional polyfoam. The base of the mattress contains pocketed metal coils that give the mattress more stability and responsiveness.
