Launched in 2004, Zinus has gained a reputation for its wide selection of mattresses at affordable prices.

The Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress is the company’s flagship product. In this review, we focus on the 12” model, but Zinus also offers four other height options.

One of the bed’s standout features is the memory foam comfort layer, which is infused with green tea extract and charcoal intended to absorb moisture and fight odor buildup. Two layers of polyfoam give the mattress a sturdy, supportive base. We cover everything you need to know about the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress, including how it performed during our mattress testing.

You prefer a compact bed and less contouring from your surface. This model performs relatively well for temperature regulation, as it doesn’t contour as closely to the body. The thinner profile of this mattress may not provide enough support for back and stomach sleepers, particularly those weighing 130 pounds or more. You enjoy a low-profile mattress and you sleep with a partner. With a slightly more robust comfort layer, the 8-inch model isolates motion to prevent it from disturbing the other person in bed The thicker comfort layers also provide better pressure relief for side sleepers up to 230 pounds. You like sleeping on a close-conforming surface. The thicker memory foam layer provides additional pressure relief by cradling sharp areas of the body, such as the hips and shoulders. Side and back sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less may enjoy this model’s accommodating feel. You’re seeking enhanced pressure relief without excessive sinkage. The three layers of foam work together to offer balanced performance with a medium firm (6) feel that appeals to most sleepers. You prioritize having a taller mattress and one with a thicker base layer of foam that helps resist sinking into the mattress. This is the softest design for the mattress, so it’s best suited to people who weigh less than 130 pounds — especially side sleepers.

“For me, the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress provided adequate support but had some drawbacks. It retained heat and lacked bounce, so switching sleeping positions was more challenging than I’d like. Nevertheless, it’s clearly a great value for bargain mattress shoppers.”

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers tend to place considerable pressure on the hips and shoulders. As a result, they need a surface that can cradle these areas while providing enough stability to keep the spine in a neutral position.

In our testing, the 12-inch Zinus Green Tea Mattress performed particularly well for side sleepers up to 230 pounds. The medium firm (6) feel and the conforming foam alleviate pressure buildup and provide a comfortable, balanced sleep surface.

Some of our side sleepers over 230 pounds felt that the mattress was too soft and didn’t provide enough overall support. These sleepers may find the 10-inch model, which has a slightly firmer feel but still cushions the body, to be a better fit for their needs.

Back Sleepers

Many back sleepers benefit from medium firm (6) mattresses  because they have just enough cushioning to cradle the torso and the lumbar area without giving out beneath the abdomen.

Our testing team found that the 12-inch model of the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress was popular among back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, and especially those weighing less than 130. They felt that the mattress provided a good blend of comfort and healthy spinal support.

Back sleepers over 230 pounds did not feel as comfortable on the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress. Many felt that the mattress lacked firmness, which allowed their midsection to sink in too deeply and negatively affected their alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers generally require a firmer surface to prevent their abdomen from sinking too deeply into the mattress. As a result, mattresses that are too plush can place additional stress on the lower back of stomach sleepers.

During our tests, stomach sleepers under 130 pounds got adequate support from the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress. For them, the mattress had just enough firmness to prevent sinkage, but the moderate contouring offered meaningful comfort and pressure relief.

However, stomach sleepers over 130 pounds felt that the mattress had too much conforming plushness. Most said that they had a hard time keeping their body in an even plane because their stomach pushed too far down into the mattress.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6″: 7 / 10

8″: 7.5 / 10

10″: 8 / 10

12″: 8.5 / 10

14″: 9 / 10

“I was impressed by the motion isolation on the Green Tea Mattress. I found that the top layer of memory foam prevented most vibrations from spreading across the mattress.” – Brad

All versions of the Zinus Green Tea Mattress contain memory foam, which contours to the sleeper’s body to prevent vibrations from traveling across the surface of the bed.

Motion isolation is most valuable to couples, especially if either bed partner is easily disturbed by movement. Memory foam absorbs motion, making it less noticeable when someone else rolls over or gets in or out of bed.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

6″: 6 / 10

8″: 6.5 / 10

10″: 8.5 / 10

12″: 8.5 / 10

14″: 9 / 10

“As a side sleeper, the amount of contouring on the Green Tea Mattress felt really comfortable to me. I didn’t feel any sharp impact around my hips or shoulders, and that made it easy to sleep comfortably on this mattress.” – Logan

The 12-inch Zinus Green Tea Mattress provides excellent pressure relief.

Areas such as the hips, shoulders, and torso often bear a significant amount of weight when sleeping. Without proper cushioning, pain and pressure can build up in these areas throughout the night.

Conforming memory foam in the Zinus Green Tea Mattress helps distribute body weight to reduce pressure in sensitive areas. Our team found that this made the mattress feel quite adaptive and comfortable.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

6″: 8 / 10

8″: 7 / 10

10″: 6.5 / 10

12″: 6.5 / 10

14″: 6 / 10

“Although I didn’t find myself waking up from overheating, I did notice that the Green Tea Mattress was on the warmer side. The heat retention is about what I expected from a memory foam mattress.” – Mary

Our testing found that the Green Team Memory Foam Mattress has a tendency to retain heat. Memory foam is known for trapping heat because the material can limit airflow by molding around the body.

This mattress includes a breathable knit cover and the green tea and charcoal infusions, all of which are intended to prevent overheating. Nevertheless, our testers could feel some extra warmth build up as they slept on the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress. While this may not affect everyone, it can be a bigger issue for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

6 / 10

6″: 4.5 / 10

8″: 5 / 10

10″: 6 / 10

12″: 6 / 10

14″: 5.5 / 10

“Like most memory foam mattresses, the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress feels noticeably weaker around the perimeter. I personally didn’t find it to be unstable, but it could be a problem for people with mobility issues or those who weigh over 230 pounds.” – Logan

With its medium firm (6) feel and all-foam construction, the Zinus Green Tea Mattress provides average to below-average edge support. This is a common drawback among memory foam mattresses, and it can be attributed to the way this foam compresses and slowly rebounds to its original shape.

Edge support may be an important consideration for individuals who like sleeping near the perimeter of the mattress, or for those who rely on a sturdy edge to get in or out of bed.

Ease of Movement

6 / 10

6″: 6 / 10

8″: 6 / 10

10″: 6 / 10

12″: 6 / 10

14″: 5.5 / 10

“I’m a combination sleeper, so I pay a lot of attention to how easy it is to adjust my sleeping position. On this mattress, I felt like movement took more effort than I’d like, but it wasn’t like I was trapped in quicksand.” – Mary

Based on our testing results, the contouring foam in the Zinus Green Tea Mattress can make movement difficult for sleepers. The mattress didn’t make our testers feel stuck in place, but they did encounter some resistance when they wanted to move around in bed.

Bouncy mattress materials tend to make movement easier, while conforming materials frequently inhibit motion. As such, below-average ease of movement is typical for a memory foam mattress. This performance factor is most important for sleepers who switch positions frequently throughout the night or those who have mobility issues.

Durability

6″: 4.5 / 10

8″: 4.5 / 10

10″: 6 / 10

12″: 6 / 10

14″: 5.5 / 10

“The Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress isn’t the most robust bed I’ve slept on, but it’s well-built for its price-point. As long as you respect the listed weight limits, you can expect several years of quality performance from this mattress.” – Brad

Analysis by our testing team suggests that, under most circumstances, Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress should hold up for the average mattress lifespan of 5 to 6 years.

Foam tends to deteriorate over time, resulting in permanent body impressions and an uneven surface. The exact lifespan depends on various factors, including the combined weight of the sleepers. The lower-profile models of this mattress may wear out more quickly because they have fewer total inches of foam inside the bed.

Zinus Mattress Review Breakdown

The Zinus Green Tea Mattress is an all-foam model with three layers in total.

The top layer consists of memory foam infused with green tea and charcoal. This material provides contouring pressure relief, and the infusions are engineered to help keep the mattress smelling and feeling fresh.

The mattress is available in five different profile options, all of which features an all-foam design. These mattresses vary in terms of firmness, ranging from medium to firm on our mattress firmness scale. The 12-inch model is medium firm (6).

All foams used in the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they have been tested and found free of formaldehyde and ozone-depleting substances. FAQs

Is Zinus a good mattress?

Zinus mattresses are popular for their affordability, pressure relief, and convenient bed-in-a-box design. Many sleepers find them comfortable, especially side sleepers and guest room shoppers looking for a budget-friendly memory foam mattress. However, some customers report concerns about durability, edge support, and long-term sagging compared to higher-end mattresses.

Does Zinus mattress have fiberglass?

Some older Zinus mattresses used fiberglass as part of the mattress fire barrier, which led to lawsuits and customer complaints after fiberglass reportedly escaped when covers were removed or damaged.

Zinus now states that its newer mattresses have transitioned away from fiberglass-based fire barriers. If you own an older Zinus mattress, it’s important not to remove the mattress cover unless the manufacturer specifically says it is removable and washable.

Where are Zinus mattresses made?

Zinus says its mattresses are “proudly manufactured in the USA” using premium American-made foams and carefully selected global materials. Depending on the model, some components and materials may still be sourced internationally.

What does green tea do in a memory foam mattress?

The green tea and charcoal infused into the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress are designed to prevent moisture buildup, so that the mattress remains fresh and odor-free.
