FloBeds is a family-owned company that has been manufacturing beds since 1971. The California-based company specializes in customizable latex mattresses and also offers several styles of bed frames, bedding, and pillows.
FloBeds makes five latex mattress models: the flagship Natural Latex Mattress, the Vegan Latex Mattress, the Big & Tall Latex Mattress, the Student Mattress, and the Organic Crib Mattress. The Natural Latex Mattress is available in three options: Select, Deluxe, and vZone.
We’ll cover the 12-inch vZone option, which is the company’s most popular model. It’s a unique mattress that’s available in four firmness levels and has a versatile construction that lets you select different feels for each side of the bed.
We’ll take an in-depth look at this mattress’ construction and materials and explain how it performs for different types of sleepers. We’ll also report how it scored during our testing and explain who is most likely to enjoy this mattress based on our results.
The FloBeds vZone Natural Latex Mattress comes in four firmness options. Using our 10-point firmness scale, our testers determined that the options correspond to soft (3), medium (5), firm (7), and extra firm (8).
- Choose Soft if… you weigh less than 130 pounds and sleep on your back or stomach.
- Choose Medium if… you’re a side or back sleeper who weighs between 130 and 230 pounds, or you’re a stomach sleeper under 130 pounds.
- Choose Firm if… you’re a back sleeper over 230 pounds or a stomach sleeper weighing between 130 and 230 pounds.
- Choose Extra Firm if… you’re a stomach sleeper over 230 pounds.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
While opinion was split among our side sleepers between the soft and medium options, none of our testers who sleep on their sides preferred the firm or extra firm beds. They noted that the firmer versions of the FloBeds vZone didn’t compress enough under their hips and shoulders to prevent pressure points from forming.
Side sleepers under 130 pounds loved the deeper contouring of the soft version. Testers over that weight level preferred the balanced feel of the medium option, with those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds giving it our highest grade.
Back Sleepers
The mattress’ zoned latex comfort layer is a major benefit for back sleepers. It cushions the upper back while providing increased support for the lower back.
The back sleepers on our team all found a version of this mattress that worked well for their individual needs. Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds gave the medium model the highest ratings. Its balance of lumbar support and pressure relief kept their spines aligned. Back sleepers under 130 pounds enjoyed both the soft and medium models, while those above 230 pounds preferred the firm and extra firm options.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers tend to have the toughest time finding a mattress that suits their needs. When a mattress is too soft for stomach sleepers, the layers compress under their weight and cause the spine to bend into an uncomfortable position. For this reason, stomach sleepers often prefer a firm mattress or even an extra firm mattress.
The medium model kept stomach sleepers under 130 pounds situated comfortably on top of the mattress without compressing significantly, and the firm option did the same for those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. The extra firm version’s robust support proved to be best for testers over 230 pounds, who gave it the highest score possible.

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Soft:
8 / 10
Medium:
7 / 10
All versions of the vZone performed well during our motion isolation tests, but the soft option limited motion transfer better than the other three models due to the softer latex formulation.
The medium, firm, and extra firm models didn’t allow excessive motion transfer, but they do feel more responsive and slightly bouncier than the soft version.
Soft:
8 / 10
Medium:
7 / 10
The FloBeds vZone provides deep pressure relief regardless of which firmness level you purchase. Its latex comfort system contours to the body to prevent pressure points from forming. Compared with memory foam, latex doesn’t conform as deeply, and its rubber-like buoyancy helps evenly distribute weight to decrease impact.
The bed’s zoned second layer also encourages pressure relief. Featuring six sections with different firmnesses, FloBeds customizes the latex formulations of each section depending on the overall firmness level you choose. This design is intended to provide extra cushioning to pressure-prone areas like the hips and shoulders.
Medium/Firm/Extra Firm:
9.5 / 10
Our testing team gave the medium, firm, and extra firm options top marks in temperature control. The soft version also regulates temperature very well, but it retains slightly more heat than the other models because it contours closer to the body.
The top latex layer is convoluted, meaning it has undulations similar to an egg crate that promote airflow. The other three layers have perforations that allow air to flow through the material naturally. The cotton and wool cover further enhances the bed’s cool feel by wicking away moisture.
The firm and extra firm versions have strong support systems that offer an even surface from edge to edge. Our testers noticed very little compression when they sat on the sides of these two models.
The soft and medium firmness levels sag a bit more when direct pressure is applied to the edges. The softer latex formulations don’t hold up as well, but they still provided adequate support when our testers sat on the perimeter.
Soft:
6 / 10
Medium:
7 / 10
We found the medium, firm, and extra firm versions of this mattress quite easy to move around on due to the naturally responsive and bouncy feels of the latex formulations. These three models give you the feeling of sleeping on top of the mattress rather than sinking into its surface.
The soft model still provides good ease of movement, but it’s a bit tougher to shift sleeping positions quickly because the softer latex has more give and absorbs motion.
The term off-gassing refers to the chemical odor that results when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released after unboxing a mattress made with synthetic foam.
The FloBeds vZone uses natural latex, so it doesn’t off-gas in the traditional sense of the term. However, our team did notice a slight rubbery smell that lingered for a short time after unboxing this mattress. If you’re sensitive to smells, you may want to keep the windows open for a brief period after setting up the bed.
The FloBeds vZone Natural Latex Mattress measures 12 inches tall. It has a four-layer latex construction and is available in four firmness options. Each version has the same general design but uses different latex formulations and layouts to create a distinct feel.
The mattress comes in soft (3), medium (5), firm (7), and extra firm (8) feels, or you can order a personalized model with a separate firmness level on each side of the bed. This is particularly helpful for couples with different preferences because it gives each partner a sleep surface that’s customized to fit their needs.
The mattress cover is made from organic cotton quilted with organic wool. The comfort system has two layers, beginning with a Talalay latex layer that has a convoluted egg-crate design engineered to enhance airflow and relieve pressure.
The following layer is also made from Talalay latex, which is fluffier and less dense than natural latex made with the Dunlop manufacturing method. It has six distinct zones with a different firmness in each zone. This feature helps maintain even spinal alignment and prevent pressure points from developing by providing enhanced cushioning in areas of the body that need more support, such as the lower back.
The support core features two layers of perforated Talalay latex to create a stable base that’s not prone to heat retention. The firmer models use denser latex layers in the support core.
