The Beautyrest mattress line dates back to the 1920s. Simmons Bedding Co., a company with a long-standing reputation for quality and craftsmanship, designed and first manufactured the mattress. Today, Beautyrest offers a wide range of mattress models featured in four different product lines.

Beautyrest Black is one of the brand’s most popular mattress lines. Standard Series One Beautyrest Black mattresses are constructed with a cooling fabric cover, foam comfort layers, and a support core of pocketed coils. Three firmness levels are available, and you can upgrade from the standard model to a pillow-top design or a more luxurious Series Two, Series Three, or Series Four mattress. Customers can also choose from another Beautyrest series, such as the Beautyrest Hybrid line.

This mattress review will focus on the standard Series One Beautyrest Black. To help you determine whether this mattress is best for you, we’ll detail the construction, firmness, pricing, and performance of each model. We’ll also take a closer look at the company’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Answer a few questions to find the right mattress for your unique needs

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Understanding how your sleeping position and body weight impact mattress performance is an important part of shopping for a new mattress. How you sleep and how much you weigh affect how much pressure is applied to the mattress. This can change the overall feel and firmness of the mattress, as these are subjective measures.

Since the comfort systems of the Beautyrest Black mattress and optional upgrades differ, one may be better than another for certain body types and sleeping styles. Keep in mind that these are general recommendations based on extensive product testing and customer feedback, but your personal preferences will play a role in determining which mattress is right for you.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers put more pressure on the mattress at their shoulders and hips. These areas push into the mattress, so pressure points often develop. This is especially the case if a mattress is too firm. Since the Beautyrest Blac contains cushioning layers of foam, it is a great choice for side sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. These sleepers should receive sufficient cushioning for their shoulders and hip support, provided they choose either the medium soft (4) or medium firm (6) model.

Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds shoulder consider the medium firm or firm (7) design. Because they weigh more, these sleepers exert more pressure onto the mattress and need a more supportive surface to prevent their hips from sinking in too deeply. Choosing a mattress that is too soft can contribute to spinal misalignment and back pain for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Most back sleepers need a balance of contouring and support. They maintain their natural posture as they sleep, and an even, flat mattress helps keep the spine in alignment. Additional contouring in the lumbar region can reduce pressure on the spine.

The medium soft and medium firm Beautyrest Black models contain cushy foam layers that are good for back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. Sleepers in this weight category do not put much pressure on the mattress, and often benefit from a mid-range firmness that conforms to the shape of their body. The medium firm design also offers ideal support for back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. Back sleepers over 230 pounds may want to choose the firm (7) or extra firm (8) design to ensure they don’t compress the mattress too much.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers across all weight groups often prefer a medium firm to firm mattress. The mattress needs to be firm and supportive enough to keep the hips and abdomen on top of the mattress. This prevents pressure from building up on the neck and lower back. That being said, the chest and shoulders need cushioning.

For stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, a softer mattress is better for the chest and shoulders, and still properly supports the hips. That is the case for the Beautyrest Black mattress. Its medium firm feel offers strong support and comfort for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. It only offers fair support for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds, as they are more likely to sink into the mattress.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8 / 10

Plush: 9 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

Firm: 6.5 / 10

Depending on the selected firmness, the Beautyrest Black has average to above-average motion isolation for a hybrid mattress. The foam comfort system includes a layer of memory foam, which helps prevent movements from transferring from one area of the bed to another.

The coils are pocketed, so they respond individually to help minimize motion transfer. However, coils still add bounce to the mattress, so bigger movements may transfer somewhat across the bed. This could include your partner getting in and out of bed. Smaller movements, like changing positions or shifting throughout the night, are less likely to be felt.

Our testing shows the medium soft (4) design isolates more motion than the other two models. That said, most couples should enjoy a disturbance-free night’s sleep on any of the three mattresses.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

Plush: 9 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 6.5 / 10

The Beautyrest Black’s foam hybrid construction helps ensure even weight distribution and consistent pressure relief. There are multiple foam layers in the comfort system that cushion areas like the shoulders and hips. These layers also reduce pressure on the spine.

Since the medium soft model contours closely, it relieves pressure quite well — especially for side and back sleepers under 130 pounds. The medium firm and firm designs don’t conform as much, making them better suited to people who weigh 130 pounds or more and want a gentle cradle from their sleep surface.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

Plush: 7 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

The Beautyrest Black mattress offers consistent thermoregulation. A breathable cover and steady airflow through the coil system help this mattress maintain a comfortable temperature from top to bottom — though the foam layers still trap some body heat.

As with most performance categories, how well or poorly a mattress controls temperature often comes down to firmness. The medium soft Beautyrest Black contours closely, so you may feel more heat absorption from the foam layers and lose surface-level airflow as your body sinks into the bed. The medium firm and firm models provide more pushback to keep your body aloft, so these designs may be better choices for hot sleepers.

If you run extremely warm in bed, one of the higher-end Beautyrest mattress lines may be a better match for your needs. Some of these models feature advanced cooling materials to dissipate moisture and body heat away from your body.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

Plush: 6 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 8.5 / 10

The Beautyrest Black’s coil system provides ample edge support. Perimeter coils reinforced with a high-density foam casing push back against the weight of your body when you sit or lie along the edges of the mattress. This can be particularly helpful for people with mobility issues who have a hard time getting in and out of bed.

The firm Beautyrest Black outperformed its softer counterparts during our edge support tests. A more supportive surface combined with extra perimeter reinforcement makes this model feel exceptionally stable. We also gave the medium firm model favorable ratings for edge support, while the medium soft design sank a bit too much.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Pocketed coils give the Beautyrest Black some extra bounce. This is most noticeable on the firm model, which feels exceptionally springy and responsive to movements on the surface. This can help you scoot across the bed and change sleep positions without feeling stuck in the foam layers, especially if you weigh more than 230 pounds.

The medium firm model is not as bouncy, but still manageable in terms of surface movements. Most of our testers reported minimal resistance when moving across this model. For the medium soft mattress, the foam layers sank deeper and hindered movement to a more frustrating extent.

Durability

7.5 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Because of its hybrid construction, we expect the Beautyrest Black to maintain its support and comfort for around 7 to 8 years. The pocketed coils tend to resist wear and tear, and the polyfoam used in the comfort layer generally lasts longer than memory foam. That being said, foam is still prone to softening and body impressions over time. The medium soft model will likely develop indentations more quickly than the medium firm and firm designs.

Beautyrest Black Mattress Review Breakdown

The Beautyrest Black mattress is a luxury hybrid mattress available in three firmness levels. The mattress profile, or total thickness, depends on which firmness level you choose.

Each Beautyrest Black model is encased in a breathable knit cover, which helps regulate temperature and increases airflow throughout the mattress.

Beneath the cover, each Beautyrest mattress contains three comfort layers of adaptive polyfoam, followed by a transitional layer of gel-infused memory foam. These layers may conform closely or only contour to a light extent, depending on which firmness level you’ve chosen.

Based on our analysis, the typical lifespan of the Beautyrest Black Mattress is between 5 and 10 years, depending on how well it’s maintained, how often it’s used, and how much weight is applied to the mattress on a regular basis. This is comparable to most hybrid mattresses.

Beautyrest backs the mattress with a 10-year limited warranty. To extend the lifespan, the company suggests rotating the mattress at least once every six months and making sure to use a sturdy and supportive bed base.
