Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
In an online industry largely overtaken by the mattress-in-a-box model, Saatva stands out for its hand-delivered beds that arrive uncompressed. Each mattress includes free White Glove delivery, meaning the company installs your new bed for you.
Saatva has been making luxury mattresses and bedding accessories since 2010. We’ll focus on theSaatva Rx, a 15-inch hybrid designed for people with joint and back conditions. Loom & Leaf Mattress: Available in medium firm (6) and firm (8) versions, the Loom & Leaf contains two memory foam layers, with the topmost layer infused with gel designed for cooling.
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid: This pressure-relieving mattress is designed to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam models.
Zenhaven: This flippable latex mattress has a medium soft (4) side and a firm (7) side.
Solaire: Featuring 50 available firmness settings on each side of the mattress, the Solaire is an adjustable airbed featuring zoned latex and a thick Euro-top.
Saatva Youth: Designed for children ages 3 through 12, the Saatva Youth is a flippable innerspring mattress with medium (5) and firm (7) sides to support growing bodies.
We’ll break down the Saatva Rx’s construction, unique features, and performance. We’ll also discuss its compatibility with different sleep positions and how it fared during testing in our sleep lab.

Mattress Performance
Motion Isolation
We found that the Saatva Rx does a very good job of preventing motion from transferring across its surface. Memory foam in the comfort system helps absorb surface vibrations, while the microcoil comfort layer is encased in high-density polyfoam that further isolates movements by sleepers.
A distinctive feature of this model is called the Rx Foam Module. In addition to wrapping the support core’s individual coils in fabric — a standard feature of most hybrid mattresses — Saatva includes a 2-inch piece of round polyfoam on top of each coil. This has the effect of deadening vibrations when pressure is exerted on the coils.
Pressure Relief
Designed by Saatva specifically for those who need extra pressure relief, our testers reported that the mattress delivers on the company’s claims.
The memory foam lumbar pad promotes spinal alignment, which can reduce lower back strain. The Rx Foam Module adapts to sleepers’ contours, while the sturdy 8-inch pocketed coil core helps align the spine by reinforcing the torso.
We found the medium soft (4) surface relieved the most pressure for side sleepers and back sleepers under 230 pounds. It also promoted good sleep posture for our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. The mattress compressed too much for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, putting pressure on the lower back.
Temperature Control
The mattress’ temperature control is on par with most quality hybrids on the market, with a breathable cotton cover and wool flame barrier that help regulate surface temperature.
The support core also has a number of temperature-regulating features. The Rx Foam Module has an open-cell structure that’s more ventilated than traditional polyfoam. It also contains graphite infusions and thermally conductive fibers designed for cooling.
Edge Support
Our testers sit and lie near the edges of a mattress to determine how sturdy its perimeter is. We also examine outer edge compression when getting in and out of bed, which is important if you have joint or mobility issues.
The Saatva Rx’s thick pocketed coil support core reduces deep compressions across its surface. Firmer coils along the perimeter keep the mattress from warping at the sides, so couples should be able to sleep comfortably near the edges of the mattress.
Ease of Movement
A mattress that facilitates movement is helpful if you have joint or muscle pain. It’s also an advantage for sleepers who toss and turn at night.
Our testers could easily move on the Saatva Rx despite its plush surface. Responsive microcoils prevent the comfort system from overly conforming to sleepers. Additionally, the strong pocketed coil core helps the mattress’ surface regain its shape more quickly.
Sex
Since the Saatva Rx performed well in areas like ease of movement and edge support, we predict that most couples will find it conducive to sex. It received only average marks for temperature control, so people who tend to overheat may want to consider a more breathable bed.
Couples who value discretion will likely appreciate the mattress’ noise-muffling features, with fabric encasements and polyfoam modules preventing the coils from audibly creaking.
Off-Gassing
You might detect mild off-gassing odors when the mattress is new. The chemical-like smell comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped inside foam. The scent gradually dissipates as the tiny particles disperse in the air, but unboxing the mattress in a well-ventilated room can help expedite the process.
We found the Saatva Rx to be an exceptionally good match for our side sleepers across weight groups, with the polyfoam-encased microcoil layer and memory foam lumbar pad cradling their hips and shoulders while promoting a level spine.
A medium soft mattress can compress too much for side sleepers over 230 pounds, but this wasn’t the case with the Saatva Rx. Robust triple-tempered steel coils kept our testers’ hips from bottoming out, allowing the spine to stay neutral.
Back Sleepers
The mattress provided balanced contouring for our back sleepers under 230 pounds. The memory foam lumbar pad encouraged spinal alignment, while the microcoils cradled the shoulders and legs. The Rx Foam Module gently contoured the lower back without compressing too much. The dense pocketed coil core limited sinkage below the torso area.
Our back sleepers over 230 pounds were less impressed, noting that they prefer a firmer model that keeps the shoulders and hips level.
Stomach Sleepers
While our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds felt adequately supported by the Saatva Rx, testers over this weight threshold felt that they sank too deeply around the midsection. Despite the presence of pocketed coils, these testers observed that the mattress felt overly soft to them, leading to concerns about potential back and neck strain.
Saatva Rx Mattress Review Breakdown
The Saatva Rx has a hybrid design with a medium soft (4) firmness level. The organic cotton cover is treated with Guardin, Saatva’s proprietary antimicrobial treatment, and it’s quilted with foam and a blend of natural materials that form a fire barrier.
The comfort system starts with a half-inch memory foam lumbar pad. Gel infusions are designed to wick away heat. Next is a 1-inch layer of flexible microcoils encased in high-density polyfoam.
The support core begins with Saatva’s Rx Foam Module, a series of 2-inch pieces of open-cell polyfoam that cover each of the pocketed coils in the support core. The individual foam modules are engineered to isolate motion better than a uniform layer of foam, and they contain phase change material and graphite infusions designed for breathability.
The 8-inch pocketed coil core forms the bulk of the mattress’ support system. Each triple-tempered steel coil is wrapped in fabric to reduce motion transfer. Sturdier caliper coils along the perimeter strengthen edge support and minimize deep sinkage when sitting or lying on the sides of the mattress.
CertiPUR-US certification shows that the foams in the Saatva Rx are free of heavy metals, phthalates, and other contaminants. It also meets strict indoor standards for low VOC emissions.
Measuring 15 inches tall, the Saatva Rx may require a fitted sheet with deep pockets. The mattress is compatible with most standard bed frames and foundations.
