Product Research Methodology: Our Process
Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
- Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
- We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
- We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

Pros & Cons:
Joybed is a Michigan-based company that produces luxury mattresses, foundations, sheets, and other bedding accessories. The online retailer emphasizes natural and plant-based materials. Joybed currently offers three mattresses: the Joybed LX, the Joybed LXP, and the Joybed LXE. These are all hybrids made without foam or chemicals.
The flagship LX is the most affordable model and has the lowest profile. Four layers of breathable plant fiber, cotton, and wool rest on a pocketed coil core. With a firm (7) feel, the LX is one of Joybed’s firmest options.
Joybed’s LXP features similar comfort layers but also includes a layer of pressure-relieving nanocoils. This model is 12 inches thick and comes in two firmness options: medium soft (4) or medium firm (6).
The LXE is Joybed’s newest and thickest model. This hand-tufted hybrid has a plush Euro-top and a comfort system made with layers of plant fiber, cotton, and microcoils. The zoned pocketed coil core is designed to promote proper spine alignment, and shoppers can choose between medium (4) and firm (7) feels.
We’ll discuss the LXE’s construction, performance, and pricing to help you decide if it’s the right mattress for you.
The Joybed LXE is available in two firmness levels: Medium-Firm or Medium-Plush. The former has a firm (7) feel, while the latter is medium (4). The best mattress and firmness for you depends on your sleep position, body weight, and personal preference.
- Choose Medium-Firm if… you prefer a responsive surface with minimal sinkage. The moderate contouring of this firmness level is particularly well-suited to back sleepers and stomach sleepers. The firm (7) feel also works well for side sleepers over 130 pounds, as they don’t require as much cushioning to alleviate pressure buildup. The Medium-Firm option also has robust edge support, so anyone who shares a bed can enjoy more sleep space.
- Choose Medium-Plush if… you like a mattress with a deeper body hug. The medium (4) feel is an excellent match for side sleepers, as they need more cradling on the hips and shoulders. The softer surface can also alleviate tension for those with chronic sore muscles, and the strong motion isolation means you’re less likely to disturb a bed partner when moving around at night.

Side Sleepers
The Joybed LXE evenly contours the hips and shoulders, which can promote neutral spine alignment for side sleepers. Cotton padding and minicoils cradle pressure points on the hips and shoulders. The sturdy coiled core keeps the hips from dipping too low, helping the spine stay level.
The best mattresses for side sleepers are generally on the softer side. The Medium-Plush model performs exceptionally well for side sleepers regardless of weight. Its medium (4) feel allows the hips and shoulders to sink just enough without distorting spinal alignment. Side sleepers weighing over 130 pounds should also experience considerable contouring on the Medium-Firm version. Those under 130 pounds, however, may find its firm (7) feel uncomfortably stiff.
Back Sleepers
The spine stays fairly level when you sleep on your back, so only mild contouring is needed to maintain good sleep posture. The LXE doesn’t overly conform to your body, and the zoned coiled core limits deep sinkage below the torso area, reducing strain on the lower back.
We found that the Medium-Firm model delivers optimum contouring and support for back sleepers across all weight brackets. Back sleepers up to 230 pounds should also feel supported on the Medium-Plush LXE. However, its softer surface may sag too much for back sleepers over 230 pounds, as the best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be firm
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers usually need a sturdier mattress to prevent excessive sagging. A medium firm to firm mattress adequately reinforces the torso area for most stomach sleepers.
The Medium-Firm LXE is the ideal firmness for stomach sleepers in any weight group. Cotton and fiber comfort layers lightly contour the stomach, while firmer cotton padding and coils minimize excess sinkage.
The Medium-Plush surface should keep the hips and belly level for stomach sleepers up to 130 pounds, but it could buckle excessively for those who weigh more. Stomach sleepers are likely to get better spine alignment on the Medium-Firm LXE.

Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6.5/10
Medium-Firm: 4 / 10
Medium-Plush: 6 / 10
Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress prevents movement from traveling across its surface. Considerable motion transfer can create disturbances for co-sleepers.
On the Medium-Plush model, motion isolation is about what you’d expect from a typical hybrid. Cotton and fiber comfort layers absorb a good amount of motion, and the transitional cotton layer dampens excess bounce from the pocketed coils.
Motion isolation is weaker on the Medium-Firm model. The responsive surface makes motion transfer more obvious. That said, a decent amount of motion is offset by coils and cotton padding.
Pressure Relief
7/10
Medium-Firm: 4 / 10
Medium-Plush: 6 / 10
The Medium-Plush version of the LXE delivers notable pressure relief for all sleep positions. Generous cotton and fiber layers cushion the body, providing comfort at pressure points.
However, pressure relief is less robust on the Medium-Firm LXE. This model lacks the tension-relieving nanocoils of the Medium-Plush version. This means that the firm surface may feel uncomfortably stiff for some sleepers, especially side sleepers weighing under 130 pounds.
Temperature Control
7.5/10
Medium-Firm: 8 / 10
Medium-Plush: 8 / 10
The LXE uses naturally breathable materials instead of heat-retentive foams, so both firmness levels regulate temperature well.
The airy cotton cover helps keep the surface cool. Cotton and fiber padding dissipate heat and moisture, while pocketed coils promote air circulation through the mattress.
Both firmness levels further discourage overheating by minimizing deep sinkage. This makes the LXE a cooler alternative for sleepers who find memory foam mattresses or some hybrids too hot.
Edge Support
7.5/10
Medium-Firm: 8 / 10
Medium-Plush: 6 / 10
The LXE has a double row of coils along the perimeter to boost edge support, so excess sagging shouldn’t be an issue no matter where you sleep on the mattress. Good edge support is also important for anyone who may have trouble getting into or out of bed.
The Medium-Firm LXE has the sturdier edges of the two models. Its firmer surface holds up to weight and pressure better than the Medium-Plush model. Couples or sleepers over 230 pounds may sink in a little more when sleeping or sitting closer to the edges of the softer mattress. In general, though, sleepers should experience consistent support on both versions.
Ease of Movement
7.5/10
Medium-Firm: 8 / 10
Medium-Plush: 6 / 10
With its coil-based design, the LXE allows for easy movement. The two types of pocketed coils keep sleepers from sinking too deeply into the comfort layers. They also help combination sleepers switch positions easily.
Movement is slightly easier on the Medium-Firm LXE since it compresses less under weight. Stomach and back sleepers over 230 pounds tend to sink more, so they may feel a little restricted on the Medium-Plush LXE.
Off-Gassing
7/10
Medium-Firm: 8 / 10
Medium-Plush: 8 / 10
Since the LXE doesn’t contain foam or chemical adhesives, it won’t have any off-gassing odors. There might be a faint earthy smell when the mattress is new, but odors shouldn’t linger for very long.
Joybed Mattress Review Breakdown
Joybed’s LXE is a hybrid made with natural and organic materials. The mattress has two main sections: a comfort system with up to seven distinct layers and a pocketed coil core. Hand-tufting secures each layer and promotes even support. At 15 inches thick, the mattress is taller than average.
The soft Euro-top has a GOTS-certified organic cotton jacquard cover. A layer of plant fiber acts as a natural fire barrier. Two separate layers of breathable cotton add softness without retaining too much heat. A low-profile layer of pocketed minicoils provides extra support.
The Medium-Plush model features an additional layer of nanocoils that conform more closely to the body. Both types of coils are designed to increase airflow throughout the comfort system. A firmer cotton layer reinforces the softer comfort layers.
Larger pocketed coils form the support core, increasing the mattress’ bounce and durability. The coils are arranged in seven zones to encourage optimal sleep posture. Heavier areas like the torso, shoulders, and hips receive more support, while the head and legs are allowed to sink more. Each coil is individually encased to reduce motion transfer. An extra row of coils along the perimeter strengthens edge support.
Joybed uses nontoxic, plant-based adhesives. The mattress is available in two firmness levels: Medium-Firm, which corresponds to a firm (7) feel, and Medium-Plush, which equates to medium (4).
The LXE is compatible with most bed frames, platform bases, and adjustable bases. Joybed sends free material samples upon request.

Mattress Prices and Sizing
The LXE is Joybed’s most expensive mattress, but it’s comparably priced compared to other luxury hybrids. Tall mattresses tend to be pricier since they require more materials. However, given its high durability rating, the LXE could save you money in the long run.
Shoppers should note that the LXE is only available in full, queen, and king sizes. Joybed’s LX and LXP, however, come in all six standard sizes. Because the LXE has a 15-inch profile, sheets with extra-deep pockets may be needed.
