Lucid Mattress is a brand that strives to offer a mattress for every sleeper type. The company’s current lineup includes gel memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses, as well as specialized models for children and a variety of bedding and sleep furniture.

We’ll focus on the Lucid 12-inch plush gel memory foam mattress, which is one of the company’s most popular models. This all-foam mattress includes gel memory foam, bamboo charcoal infusions, and a high-density polyfoam base.

The mattress has a firmness level rated as medium. On a subjective scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the firmest, this would fall around a 4. Lucid’s gel memory foam lineup includes a wide range of firmness levels at different height profiles for those who prefer a harder or softer feel.

We’ll break down the details on the Lucid mattress’s materials and construction, as well as our performance ratings and recommendations for each sleeper type. We’ll end with a quick summary of warranty, sleep trial, and shipping policies.

Lucid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Lucid 12-inch plush gel memory foam mattress is an all-foam mattress with 3 layers in total. This is slightly higher than the average memory foam mattress, leaving room for an ample comfort layer section that provides deep pressure relief.

The cover is made of a polyester and Tencel lyocell blend. Tencel lyocell is a material derived from plants that wicks moisture away from the sleeper’s body to help prevent heat build-up. The cover has a zipper and can be removed for easier cleaning.

A 3-inch layer of open-cell memory foam sits underneath the cover. This foam is fairly low density, so it conforms to the body but has a faster response to pressure than denser memory foams. To further combat the heat retention that often occurs with memory foam, Lucid has infused this layer with gel beads and added ventilation holes for extra airflow.

The second comfort layer consists of 1 inch of memory foam with bamboo charcoal, which has antibacterial properties. This layer provides additional contouring and motion isolation. It rests atop the 8-inch support core. Made of firmer polyfoam, the support core lends structure and stability to the bed and helps improve spinal alignment.

Overall, the mattress has a firmness best described as medium soft. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the firmest, this would fall around a 4. While slightly on the plush side for some sleepers, this firmness is preferred by many side sleepers and people under 130 pounds, as it provides extra cushioning to minimize pressure points.

In addition to a firmer version of the same model, Lucid makes a variety of memory foam mattresses ranging from 5 to 14 inches in height. Each model offers a slightly different feel, with thinner mattresses generally firmer and thicker mattresses plusher. These models might be worth looking into if you feel the plush 12-inch mattress is not right for you.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Lucid 12-inch gel memory foam mattress has an average price-point compared to other Lucid mattresses, but is priced on the lower end within the overall bed-in-a-box market. Due to the low density of its foams, it may start to develop permanent body indentations sooner than the average foam mattress. It shouldn’t be considered a long-term investment but may make a great option for a dorm room, guest room, or 4 to 5 year period in a master bedroom.

Lucid offers an extra size for some models, full XL, that is not usually seen with other companies. This option is slightly longer than a normal full size mattress and may be attractive for taller couples or individuals who sleep by themselves.

Mattress Performance

  • Motion Isolation

This Lucid 12-inch gel memory foam mattress performs exceptionally well on motion isolation due to the 4 inches of memory foam in the comfort layer. By comparison, many competing brands have just 1 or 2 inches of memory foam followed by a more responsive material that allows movement to ripple across the surface of the bed.

Memory foam has high point elasticity, which means it adapts to the shape of your body without allowing motion to spread beyond the immediate area. It also has a relatively slow response to pressure that further absorbs motion. This mattress is a good pick for couples, as sensitive sleepers should be able to sleep uninterrupted by their partner’s movements.

  • Pressure Relief

Thick layers of memory foam swaddle sleepers on the Lucid mattress, enveloping them in a tight hug that all but eliminates pressure points. Memory foam is considered one of the best materials for pressure relief due to its ability to conform closely in response to heat and pressure.

The plush firmness level of the Lucid mattress lends itself well to the needs of side sleepers, especially those who weigh less than 130 pounds. These sleepers often experience pressure points at areas such as the hips and shoulders when sleeping on more unyielding mattresses. By contrast, the Lucid mattress forms a tight cradle that distributes body weight and reduces these pressure points.

  • Temperature Control

Memory foam is known for trapping heat, and some sleepers may find that the Lucid mattress gets uncomfortably warm at night.

To counteract this heat retention, Lucid has included a percentage of moisture-wicking Tencel fabric in the cover. Additionally, the mattress’s top layer is made with open-cell memory foam that is ventilated with tiny holes designed to whisk away heat from the sleeper. The memory foam is also infused with gel beads, which are said to regulate temperature by absorbing heat and slowing the rate at which the surface of the mattress heats up.

The mattress conforms closely to the body, which means it traps a significant amount of heat around the sleeper instead of letting it dissipate. Hot sleepers may prefer a mattress from Lucid’s latex or hybrid lines, which should offer much better temperature neutrality.

  • Edge Support

The Lucid mattress lacks reinforcement around the edges and sleepers may have a hard time sleeping near, or sitting on, the edges of the bed. This is to be expected from all-foam mattresses, which don’t have the structural support that comes from the coils of an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

Weak edge support can make a mattress feel smaller, as sleepers shrink toward the middle of the bed to avoid feelings of instability along the perimeter. Couples who are interested in the Lucid mattress may want to consider purchasing a larger size to leave more room on each person’s half of the bed.

  • Ease of Movement

Due to its close conforming and slow response to pressure, the Lucid mattress ranks below average on ease of movement. As it adapts to changes in heat and pressure, memory foam can cause body indentations that take a moment to disappear. This can lead to the feeling of being entrenched in the mattress, and can make it difficult to adopt a new position. The effect is particularly pronounced in individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds who sink further into the mattress.

This phenomenon is not uncommon for a memory foam mattress, and it is the reason why combination sleepers tend to favor more responsive latex or hybrid models. Lucid’s firmer memory foam mattresses also keep sleepers more “on” than “in” the mattress and may be a good compromise for those who prefer the feel of memory foam.

  • Sex

The Lucid mattress is difficult to move around on and it has little to no bounce, which may be a problem for some couples when it comes to sex. The mattress also lacks edge support, limiting couples to the center of the bed.

On the other hand, couples who prefer a mattress with some traction may find the Lucid perfectly adequate for sex. The mattress is also silent when bearing weight, which is a major advantage for couples who wish to avoid noise from their bed during sex.

  • Off-Gassing

Some customers may notice a chemical “new mattress” smell when they unbox the Lucid mattress. The smell occurs due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the synthetic foams being released into the air.

Lucid uses foams that are guaranteed low in emissions by the CertiPUR-US program, and there’s no need to worry as the smell is considered perfectly normal and harmless. Due to the relatively solid foam build of the mattress, it may take a couple of days for the smell to air out. Placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room can help speed up the process.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:

The Lucid 12-inch gel memory foam mattress contours to the sleeper’s curves, minimizing pressure points in side sleepers under 230 pounds. The plush memory foam provides deep cushioning for the hips and shoulders, which are typical problem areas in side sleepers. The mattress also promotes proper spinal alignment by allowing wider body parts to sink into the bed enough to keep the spine straight.

Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may not be as comfortable on this medium soft mattress. These sleepers exert more pressure on the mattress and are likely to sink in too far. Where heavier body parts are not properly supported, this can compromise spinal alignment and cause aches and pains.

Back Sleepers:

The medium soft surface of the Lucid mattress provides adequate support for back sleepers under 130 pounds, but may cause pressure build-up in heavier individuals.

Most people tend to carry more weight around the midsection, making this area liable to sink in too far when back sleeping. Lighter sleepers don’t put very much pressure on the mattress and shouldn’t have a problem maintaining correct spinal alignment. However, individuals who weigh more than 130 pounds may find that the mattress offers insufficient lumbar support, leading to lower back pain.

Stomach Sleepers:

The Lucid 12-inch gel memory foam mattress is too plush for most stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers require a firm surface to keep the spine on an even plane. Unfortunately, the Lucid mattress is so soft that it provides uneven spinal support. Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds would do better to opt for one of Lucid’s firmer foam models. These do a better job of keeping the sleeper aloft, preventing the excessive sagging in the hips that can lead to back pain on plusher models like this one.

The exception is sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. This group should find the 12-inch plush gel mattress subjectively firmer, as these sleepers don’t weigh enough to significantly compress the foam. They will therefore sleep “on” and not “in” the mattress, and experience a good degree of support.

  • Shipping

The Lucid mattress ships free whether purchased from Lucid or through Amazon. It usually arrives within 5 to 7 days, or slightly longer if ordered through Amazon.

The mattress is shipped as a bed-in-a-box. To set it up, carefully remove the box and plastic and allow the mattress to expand on a flat surface. Lucid states that the mattress may take up to 48 hours to fully regain its height.

  • Additional Services

Lucid does not offer White Glove delivery or old mattress removal at this time.

  • Sleep Trial

The Lucid mattress can be returned for a refund within 30 days of the purchase date. Mattresses purchased through Amazon are subject to Amazon’s standard 30-day return policy. Customers should contact the retailer from whom they bought the mattress to arrange returns.

Most online mattress companies offer a sleep trial of at least 90 nights to compensate for customers not being able to try out the mattress in-store. The shorter sleep trial here is offset by the mattress’s low price, but the purchase may still be a gamble for indecisive shoppers who wish to try the mattress before committing.

  • Warranty

Lucid mattresses are backed by a 10-year limited warranty, which falls within the standard mattress warranty length.

The warranty covers workmanship and material defects, including body impressions that are at least 1.5 inches deep. It does not cover normal wear and tear, changes in softness or resilience, stains, or damage that occurs as a result of misuse, improper care, commercial use, transit, handling, or alterations by unauthorized parties.

Defective mattresses will be repaired, replaced, or refunded at the company’s discretion. Customers should register their mattress for warranty coverage at the time of purchase. The warranty is only valid for original purchasers within the U.S. Additional conditions may apply.
