Get $300 off any mattress at Amerisleep

Customers shopping for a memory foam mattress are likely to come across the offerings from Amerisleep. This company, founded in 2010, has built its brand around the contouring comfort of memory foam.

In all five Amerisleep mattresses, customers will find Bio-Pur memory foam, which has a reduced environmental footprint compared to traditional memory foam. All of these beds also feature covers made from a breathable blend of cotton and polyester.

The Amerisleep models — numbered as AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5 — have similar designs and materials, but there are important differences in firmness, layering, and performance. Price is another key difference, with the cost increasing progressively from the lowest-priced AS1 to the most-expensive AS5.

Understanding the central components of the Amerisleep mattresses can help customers determine which, if any, of these memory foam mattresses is the right choice to help them get quality sleep night after night.

Side Sleepers

For many side sleepers, the Firm (7) feel of the AS1 is too hard to avoid impact at their pressure points. They may feel undue stress at the shoulders or hips and may find that there’s not enough cushioning to keep these areas in line with the rest of the body. These issues are most likely to arise for side sleepers under 130 pounds. Side sleepers over 230 may appreciate the firmer feel, but the fact that the comfort system is only two-inches thick may be problematic for people of a higher weight.

Back Sleepers

The AS1 is a good fit for back sleepers, especially those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. These sleepers can benefit from the firmness of the mattress while taking advantage of the Bio-Pur memory foam’s ability to lightly cushion the lower back. In some cases, people with higher body weights who sleep on their back may find that the thinner comfort system is not able to offer a full slate of pressure relief.

Stomach Sleepers

Just like with back sleepers, stomach sleepers usually do well with the AS1. It has enough firmness to meet their needs but adds a touch of conforming to keep the spine aligned. People who have a higher body weight, though, may do better with a mattress that has a thicker comfort system than the two inches offered by the AS1.

Side Sleepers

The AS2 rates well for side sleepers of any weight. Its Medium Firm feel has enough cushioning for hips and shoulders, and there is sufficient contouring to maintain healthy spinal alignment. That said, some people under 130 pounds may find it a little bit too firm, especially with a top layer that is just two-inches thick.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers, especially those under 230 pounds, tend to find the AS2 to be a great match for their needs. It is able to combine a Medium Firm feel with a level of contouring that can smoothly cushion their midsection.

Stomach Sleepers

People under 130 pounds who sleep on their stomach often find the AS2 to suit their needs because they do not sink as much into the mattress material. While the AS2 can work for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, they are at a greater risk of finding that there is too much hug around the midsection, and that risk is heightened for people over 230 pounds.

Side Sleepers

The AS3 is a hit with side sleepers because of its Medium feel and strong ability to compress in proportion to a person’s high-impact zones. The thicker memory foam layer has more cushioning for the hips and shoulders, keeping side sleepers from waking up with pain in those areas. A subset of side sleepers over 230 pounds, though, may find the AS3 to be slightly too soft for their liking.

Back Sleepers

Among back sleepers, the AS3 is the best fit for those who are under 130 pounds. For other back sleepers, the mattress may be workable, but many will find it to be too soft. But for those under 130 pounds who don’t sink as much into a Medium level of firmness, the mattress can comfortably cradle the lumbar spine.

Stomach Sleepers

For the most part, the AS3 is too soft and contouring for stomach sleepers. The main exception is stomach sleepers under 130 pounds who may find that the amount of give offered by the mattress is just enough given their lighter body weight and reduced pressure on the memory foam layer.

Side Sleepers

Thanks to its Medium Soft feel and excellent pressure relief, the AS4 serves the needs of most side sleepers. Its thicker memory foam layer can compress to lighten the load at hot spots while promoting a healthy spinal posture. Side sleepers over 230 pounds, though, may be more inclined to find that the AS4 is too plush.

Back Sleepers

For most people who sleep on their backs, the AS4 will be too soft. For back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds, though, the softer, more conforming feel may not pose a problem and may actually be a welcome way to cushion the lower back.

Stomach Sleepers

Few stomach sleepers find the AS4 to be the right fit for them. It has too much hug and softness to keep them well-aligned, and they are also prone to feeling stuck in the mattress. The stomach sleepers most likely to be satisfied with the AS4 are those who are under 130 pounds and like a plusher feel.

Side Sleepers

The AS5 is a solid pick for side sleepers, particularly those who like a more plush and contouring feel. That includes side sleepers under 130 pounds who can get the most out of the deep conforming without the risk of pushing too far into the comfort layers.

Back Sleepers

With the exception of back sleepers under 130 pounds, most people who spend the night in this position find that their midsection presses too far into the AS5, reducing both their comfort and support.

Stomach Sleepers

Similar to back sleepers, most stomach sleepers are not well-suited to the AS5 and its Soft feel; however, people under 130 pounds in this position may be a better fit for this softer, more conforming sleeping surface.

Mattress Performance

Amerisleep AS1

Motion Isolation

7/10

Because it includes a comfort system made with memory foam, the AS1 rates well for motion isolation. Even though its contouring is not as extensive as it is in other Amerisleep beds, the memory foam limits the transfer of motion across the mattress surface.

Pressure Relief

5.5/10

Although memory foam usually stands out for pressure relief, that is limited in the AS1 because of the thinner and firmer design. Because it is only 2-inches thick, the comfort system can struggle with accommodating people with sharp pressure points or a body weight over 230 pounds. With a harder feel and reduced contouring, the AS1 offers less pressure relief than other Amerisleep beds. It still rates as average, but it may be insufficient for some sleepers.

Temperature Control

5/10

Sleepers in any position don’t sink as far into the AS1 because of its Firm feel. This translates to better temperature control because more air is able to move freely around the body, activating its natural cooling process. The breathable cotton-polyester blend cover also aids with temperature control.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Unlike many other memory foam beds — including many from Amerisleep — the AS1 does not suffer from edge support problems. Although the Bio-Pur foam compresses near the edge, that layer is only two-inches thick and is buttressed by the firm Bio-Core support foam underneath it. The result is a memory foam mattress that retains more stability around its perimeter.

Ease of Movement

5/10

The ability of the AS1 to contour to the body and reduce motion transfer can pose some barriers to ease of movement on the mattress. Though it doesn’t have a quicksand-type feeling, it also has minimal responsiveness. Taken together, the AS1 has an average rating for ease of movement.

Off-Gassing

5.5/10

With an all-foam construction and mattress-in-a-box shipping, it’s normal for a mattress to have a light smell. That smell from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is generally considered to be harmless, and it can be expected to fade away within a few hours. Overall off-gassing in the Amerisleep beds tends to be less than many other all-foam beds because of the use of Bio-Pur and Bio-Core foams that use fewer petrochemicals.

Amerisleep AS2
Highlights:

Robust comfort system with a balanced blend of contouring memory foam and SMT-zoned polyfoam.
Medium Firm feel suits a wide range of sleepers and hedges against exaggerated sinking into the AS2.
Solid motion isolation and temperature control for a memory foam mattress.

Amerisleep AS2

Motion Isolation

8/10

Both layers of the comfort system work to minimize motion transfer on the AS2. The Bio-Pur memory foam leads the way, but the zoned polyfoam supplements the bed’s overall ability to isolate motion.

Most people rate this mattress as solidly above average in this category and plenty effective to prevent disruptions for people who share a mattress.

Pressure Relief

8/10

A one-two punch from the comfort system enables the AS2 to relieve pressure for most sleepers. The memory foam layer contours to high-impact areas, while the polyfoam with the SMT system gives extra reinforcement and cushioning underneath key parts of the body.

However, because the top layer is two-inches thick, it may be slightly less capable of offering a full slate of pressure relief to people with a higher body weight (over 230 pounds).

Temperature Control

5/10

Temperature control on the AS2 is slightly above average for a foam bed thanks to a combination of factors.

First, its Medium Firm feel and moderate contouring preserves room for cooling air to circulate around the body. Second, the open-cell Bio-Pur memory foam cuts down, albeit in a limited fashion, the heat retention in the top layer. Lastly, the cover is quite breathable.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The AS2 has enough edge support to keep you from feeling wholly unstable around the perimeter, but most people do notice significant compression close to the edge of the bed. This usually doesn’t prevent sleeping or sitting near the edge, but this problem is likely to be greater for people of a higher body weight. Because of the SMT polyfoam, edge support will be higher at the head and foot of the bed.

Off-Gassing

5.5/10

Though the Bio-Pur and Bio-Core foams tend to give off fewer smelly VOCs, there is still a mild odor after the AS2 is unboxed. This is normal for mattresses of this type. Unless someone is quite smell-sensitive, this is nothing more than a minor nuisance that goes away within a few hours.

Amerisleep AS3
Highlights:

Thick layer of high-density memory foam in the comfort system provides excellent motion isolation.
Polyfoam zoned with SMT combined with memory foam for excellent pressure relief.

Amerisleep AS3

Motion Isolation

8.5/10

With an even thicker memory foam layer than the AS2, the Amerisleep AS3 excels in the area of motion isolation. Its foam compresses to closely meet the body, dramatically reducing the motion felt on other parts of the mattress. Powered by this Bio-Pur memory foam material, the AS3 is a great choice for couples who want to prevent nighttime disruptions from each others’ movement.

Pressure Relief

8/10

AMERISLEEP_AS3_PRESSURE_SIDE

Each of the components of the AS3’s comfort system works to effectively relieve pressure and promote spinal alignment. The three-inch memory foam layer has above-average contouring to cushion hot spots, and the polyfoam zoned with SMT adds extra support in key areas to help the mattress be optimally tailored to each sleeper.

Temperature Control

5/10

AMERISLEEP_AS3_HEATCAM

The benefits of motion isolation and conforming come with a downside, which is that the AS3 retains more heat than the AS1 or AS2. Because the body sinks further into the mattress, less air can flow around the skin to cool it down. On top of that, because the memory foam is thicker, that layer can build up more heat over the course of the night.

While the open-cell design and cotton-blend cover work to mitigate heat collection, the AS3 nevertheless is only average for temperature control and may pose a problem for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

6/10

AMERISLEEP_AS3_EDGEPUSH

The edge support from the AS3 is slightly below average because of the thick comfort system and the thicker layer of memory foam in that system. With the softness of memory foam and its low level of responsiveness, the perimeter of the mattress can feel unstable, especially when sitting on the edge. People who weigh over 230 pounds are more likely to experience this reduced degree of edge support.

Ease of Movement

5/10

Changing sleeping positions on the AS3 is neither effortless nor particularly difficult. Although the memory foam rebounds slowly to its original shape, the mattress is still Medium in firmness, reducing the extent to which sleepers are likely to feel stuck in one position on the mattress.

Off-Gassing

5.5/10

As with the other Amerisleep mattresses, light off-gassing should be expected with the AS3. VOCs may be detected by smell for a few hours after unboxing the mattress.

Amerisleep AS4
Highlights:

Thickest memory foam layer of any Amerisleep model.
High-density, high-performance Bio-Pur foam provides top-notch motion isolation and pressure relief.

Amerisleep AS4

Motion Isolation

9/10

Motion isolation is a standout feature of the AS4. This model uses four inches of Bio-Pur memory foam in its topmost layer. This extra-thick memory foam layer effectively absorbs motion and contains compression so that bed partners are extremely unlikely to notice when the other is tossing and turning.

Couples looking for a disruption-free sleep surface should give strong consideration to the AS4.

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

Pressure relief in the AS4 is driven by the thick memory foam layer. With a four-inch depth, this layer delivers profound contouring and hug to benefit sleepers with the most significant pressure points. While the SMT/HIVE polyfoam layer is thinner in the AS4, it does offer an extra element of zoned support on top of the conforming provided by memory foam.

Temperature Control

5/10

The downside of an extra-thick memory foam layer is reduced temperature regulation. Memory foam builds up heat at night, and that heat makes it even softer, increasing hug and blocking air from moving around the skin.

Even with the cotton-polyester cover, the AS4 can sleep warm and may not be well-suited to people who frequently find that they overheat at night.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The four-inch Bio-Pur foam layer makes the AS4 susceptible to problems with edge support. The compression of the foam is the deepest around the edge, and that means that there can be instability when sleeping near the edge of the bed. That compression becomes even more pronounced when sitting on the edge.

While the mattress won’t completely give out, customers will clearly notice a reduced amount of support around the perimeter of the AS4.

Ease of Movement

5/10

Memory foam, including Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur foam, moves slowly to retake its shape when pressure is removed from it. This low level of responsiveness means that it’s far easier to feel stuck in place, putting up barriers to ease of movement on the mattress surface. While this same characteristic is a plus for motion isolation and pressure relief, it comes with a downside of below-average ability to move about on the bed.

Off-Gassing

6/10

The smell of the AS4 after unboxing is noticeable but little more than a nuisance. This new mattress smell typically is gone within a few hours. It only affects customer satisfaction for individuals who happen to be especially sensitive to smells or VOCs.

Amerisleep AS5
Highlights:

ActiveFlex foam layer adds bounce without reducing pressure relief.
Most robust comfort system — with a total thickness of seven inches — offered by Amerisleep.

Amerisleep AS5

Motion Isolation

9/10

The top layer of foam in the AS5 is memory foam. With three inches of this material, the mattress has excellent properties of motion isolation. Because the underlying layer of ActiveFlex foam has more bounce, there is slightly more motion transfer on the AS5 than the AS4. Nevertheless, this mattress offers more than enough motion isolation to prevent sleep disruptions for almost all couples.

Pressure Relief

9/10

The AS5 has a robust comfort system that totals seven inches in thickness.

The three layers that compose that comfort system all play a part in generating significant pressure relief. Memory foam conforms to smooth out pressure points, ActiveFlex foam prevents the body from sinking out of line, and the zoned polyfoam tailors its feel to match five different sections of the body.

With all of these materials working in conjunction, the AS5 performs excellently in supporting spinal alignment.

Temperature Control

5/10

Amerisleep has built features into the AS5 to fight sleeping hot, but on the whole, this mattress is still prone to heat retention. The breathable cover and open-cell foams can’t counteract the deep sink and subsequent reduction of airflow near the skin. While many people won’t find the AS5 to be too hot, its below-average temperature regulation is a potential problem for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Edge support on the AS5 is around average for a foam model. While the memory foam layer sinks quite a bit around the edge, the ActiveFlex foam has more resilience to it, helping to hold up the perimeter and reduce a sense of instability when lying or sitting down at the edge.

Ease of Movement

5/10

With its Soft feel and notable cradling of the body, the AS5 can pose some challenges for moving on the bed. The ActiveFlex foam, which has more responsiveness, helps to work against this somewhat, but it still is not the easiest to move around on.

Off-Gassing

6/10

With an added layer of foam and a total height of 14 inches, the AS5 has more likelihood of generating a significant smell than the other Amerisleep beds. Nevertheless, most customers don’t find this to be a big deal, especially because the smell and VOCs dissipate within a few hours or a few days at the most.

Amerisleep Mattress Review Breakdown

The best way to start reviewing and evaluating the Amerisleep mattresses is by taking a close look at their construction.

Common Components in the Amerisleep Mattresses

Before getting into the design of each individual mattress, we’ll highlight some common components in all the Amerisleep beds:

  • Cover: All Amerisleep mattresses are encased in covers made from blended cotton and polyester. The fabric is very soft and also breathable, which helps with surface-level temperature regulation.
  • Bio-Pur memory foam: This is a type of viscoelastic foam (memory foam) that uses plant-based oils in place of some of the petrochemicals typically used in foam production. As a result, this material has a lower carbon footprint. Its open-cell structure is intended to enhance ventilation as well. The thickness and firmness of the Bio-Pur memory foam layer varies based on the Amerisleep mattress model; however, this foam has an above-average density of 4 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) and an ILD of 10. The higher density improves the durability of the mattress, and this ILD number offers a softer, more contouring feel.
  • Polyfoam with Surface Modification Technology (SMT): This material is incorporated into all of the Amerisleep mattresses except the AS1. The SMT design, which Amerisleep calls their HIVE technology, means that the foam is not uniform in its feel. Instead, there are five zones — head, shoulders/back, hips, upper leg/knees, lower leg — that are built to offer more or less cushioning to different parts of the body.
  • Bio-Core polyfoam: This base polyfoam is used in the support core of the Amerisleep mattresses. Like the Bio-Pur foam, it replaces some petrochemicals with plant-based oils.  Density and thickness for this foam varies based on the model.

With this information in mind, it’s easier to understand the details of how each Amerisleep mattress offering is constructed.

Amerisleep AS1

The AS1 is the least-expensive and firmest of the Amerisleep mattresses. Its interior construction is simple and involves just two layers. The top layer is two inches of Bio-Pur memory foam, and the bottom layer is an eight-inch support core made of Bio-Core polyfoam. This Bio-Core foam has a density of 1.65 PCF and an extra-firm ILD of 40.

The memory foam layer gives the AS1 mild contouring even though the overall feel is Firm, falling around a 7 on the firmness scale.

Amerisleep AS2

The AS2 is a three-layer mattress with a Medium Firm feel that is rated at around a 6 on the firmness scale.

Two different materials are used in the comfort system of the AS2. The topmost layer is two inches of Bio-Pur memory foam. The second layer is three inches of polyfoam zoned with SMT. This polyfoam has a density of 1.65 PCF and an ILD of 40.

The support core has a thickness of seven inches and is made up entirely of Bio-Core polyfoam with a density of 1.5 PCF and an ILD of 35.

Amerisleep AS3

The design of the AS3 is quite similar to the AS2 except that it has a three-inch layer of Bio-Pur memory foam and a two-inch layer of SMT-zoned polyfoam in its comfort system. The zoned polyfoam layer is slightly softer than in the AS2.

The combined effect of the thicker memory foam layer and the softer SMT layer is that the AS3 has a softer feel — rated as Medium (5) — and a higher degree of contouring than the AS1 or AS2.

Amerisleep AS4

The Amerisleep AS4 has the same components as the AS2 and AS3, but the thickness of the interior layers changes substantially in this model.

In the AS4, the memory foam layer is four-inches thick, and the zoned/SMT polyfoam layer is only one inch. That SMT layer also has a much softer feel, which, when combined with the extra-thick memory foam layer, gives the AS4 a Medium Soft feel (a 4 on the firmness scale).

Amerisleep AS5

The AS5 is the thickest of the Amerisleep mattresses and includes a material that is not found in any of the other models.

That layer is called ActiveFlex foam, which is a type of polyfoam with a more latex-like performance. This means that it more quickly bounces back to its original shape, but it is still able to enhance overall mattress contouring.

A two-inch layer of ActiveFlex foam is used in the AS5 comfort system. It sits beneath a three-inch layer of the Bio-Pur memory foam and a two-inch layer of zoned polyfoam. The support core is seven inches of Bio-Core foam, giving the AS5 a total height of 14 inches.

The overall feel of the AS5 is Soft — 3 on the firmness scale — with significant contouring but more bounce than other Amerisleep models.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The most affordable Amerisleep mattress is the AS1, and prices increase incrementally with each model. A benefit of this product line of five mattresses is that customers have a wider price range to choose from.

Overall, Amerisleep mattresses are around the average or modestly above-average in price relative to other all-foam and memory foam beds on the market. However, the quality of their materials — including the cotton and polyester blend cover, high-density memory foam, and Bio-Pur and Bio-Core foams — helps both explain and justify the added cost.

Taking their build, performance, and price point into account, all of the Amerisleep beds can be considered a good value. While the AS4 and AS5 may be a stretch for some budgets, the AS1, AS2, and AS3 can be appealing options without putting as much strain on your wallet.

Each of the Amerisleep beds is offered in seven size options: each of the six standard sizes as well as a Split King. A Split King is composed of two separate Twin XL mattresses.

Customer Reviews

A central way to learn about the performance of a mattress is by scrutinizing its reviews from real-life customers. While reviews aren’t a perfect reflection of the quality of a mattress, looking for trends in reviews can provide information that is helpful in choosing the best mattress for your home.

Amerisleep breaks up the reviews for each individual mattress on their website, and you’ll find that some of the models have considerably more reviews than others. Some reviews are available on Amazon as well; however, those reviews are fewer and are not separated by model.

Based on our analysis of customer reviews as well as independent third-party analyses of the Amerisleep product line, we’ve found some consistent themes:

  • Meaningful pain relief. Many customers describe reductions in long-standing pain in their joints, including their hips, shoulders, and back. This pain relief may come from the close contouring and even weight distribution of memory foam.
  • Excellent motion isolation. People who share an Amerisleep mattress find that there’s little-to-no motion transfer. The most motion transfer occurs on the AS1.
  • Quiet performance. While this is to be expected of all-foam beds, customers, especially those used to sleeping on innerspring beds, praise the Amerisleep mattresses for remaining quiet through the night.
  • Solid customer service. Buyers of all models indicate that Amerisleep provides quality customer care, even when customers have complaints or want to make a return. This is also reflected in Amerisleep’s “A” rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Though the reviews for the Amerisleep mattresses are quite positive, there are some complaints to be found:

  • The firmness level can be tricky. Customers who want a less-expensive mattress may find the AS1 and AS2 to be too firm, and customers looking for a more robust option may find the AS4 and AS5 to be too soft. As with most mattress brands, some customers have a hard time finding the right balance of conforming and firmness to suit their comfort preferences and spinal support requirements.
  • Temperature regulation issues. A known issue for memory foam beds, heat retention creeps up in a portion of reviews for the Amerisleep beds. These issues are greater for hot sleepers and on the models with thicker memory foam layers, especially the AS4.
  • Harder to move on the bed. The challenge of moving on top of the bed is another problem that can arise with memory foam. While not a serious issue for most people, it is an important topic to consider before opting for a memory foam mattress.

Star ratings are broken down for each model below, and individual reviews can be read in their entirety on the Amerisleep and Amazon websites.

Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability

Amerisleep mattresses can be purchased online and in physical stores.
Online sales are offered on the Amerisleep website as well as through Amazon. If purchasing through Amazon, be aware that all returns and service issues must be coordinated with Amazon and are subject to Amazon’s policies.

Shopping on the Amerisleep website is available to customers in all 50 U.S. states and some international locations. People outside the U.S. can check with Amerisleep directly about whether the company offers services in their country.

For in-person shopping, Amerisleep has 12 branded stores in the United States. An online store-finder feature on the Amerisleep website helps identify the closest showroom to any given zip code.

Shipping

Amerisleep provides free FedEx Ground shipping to all addresses in the contiguous United States. This standard shipping option means that the mattress is compressed tightly, wrapped in plastic, and put in a box that is delivered to your home. The mattress normally arrives within about a week after you have placed and paid for your order.

When the mattress arrives, you must carry the box into the room of your choice, open the packaging, and set the mattress up on your desired frame. Carrying and setting up the mattress usually requires two people.

Shipping is available to Alaska, Hawaii, and some international addresses for an added fee. Customers need to contact Amerisleep for information about shipping fees and timelines for locations outside the contiguous U.S.

Additional Services

At this time, Amerisleep does not offer any White Glove delivery services — such as installation or removal of an old mattress — when purchasing a mattress alone.

White Glove services may be available in some locations when purchasing a mattress in a set that includes an adjustable frame.

Sleep Trial

All of the Amerisleep mattress options come with a 100-night sleep trial. The company requires that you keep that mattress for 30 nights as a break-in period before asking for a return.

If you decide during the trial that you are not satisfied with the mattress, you can request a return, and Amerisleep will work with you to have a courier come to your home and pick up the mattress at no cost. You receive a full refund of the purchase price.

Warranty

Amerisleep backs their mattresses with a 20-year warranty that covers defects in materials and craftsmanship. This warranty is prorated with different terms during the first ten years compared to the second half of the warranty period.

During the first ten years, the company will repair or replace any mattress that is shown to be defective at no cost. During years 11 through 20, Amerisleep will provide a replacement mattress, but the customer is responsible for paying 50% of the original purchase price and a fee for shipping.
