The thicker memory foam layer has more cushioning for the hips and shoulders, keeping side sleepers from waking up with pain in those areas. A subset of side sleepers over 230 pounds, though, may find the AS3 to be slightly too soft for their liking.

Among back sleepers, the AS3 is the best fit for those who are under 130 pounds. For other back sleepers, the mattress may be workable, but many will find it to be too soft. But for those under 130 pounds who don’t sink as much into a Medium level of firmness, the mattress can comfortably cradle the lumbar spine.

The AS6 earned favorable ratings from side sleepers on our team. Those under 130 pounds preferred the medium soft (4) design, whereas our side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds felt more comfortable on the medium firm (6) and firm (7) models.

For most back sleepers on our team, the medium firm and firm AS6 models provided adequate support and didn’t sink excessively. The medium soft design was not as popular with back sleepers due to its deeper hug.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers on our team by and large preferred the firm AS6. Some also gave high marks to the medium firm model, but none of them felt comfortable or adequately supported on the medium soft model.

With an even thicker memory foam layer than the AS2, the Amerisleep AS3 excels in the area of motion isolation. Its foam compresses to closely meet the body, dramatically reducing the motion felt on other parts of the mattress. Powered by this Bio-Pur memory foam material, the AS3 is a great choice for couples who want to prevent nighttime disruptions from each others’ movement.
Each of the components of the AS3’s comfort system works to effectively relieve pressure and promote spinal alignment. The three-inch memory foam layer has above-average contouring to cushion hot spots, and the polyfoam zoned with SMT adds extra support in key areas to help the mattress be optimally tailored to each sleeper.
The benefits of motion isolation and conforming come with a downside, which is that the AS3 retains more heat than the AS2. Because the body sinks further into the mattress, less air can flow around the skin to cool it down. On top of that, because the memory foam is thicker, that layer can build up more heat over the course of the night.
While the open-cell design and cotton-blend cover work to mitigate heat collection, the AS3 nevertheless is only average for temperature control and may pose a problem for hot sleepers.
The edge support from the AS3 is slightly below average because of the thick comfort system and the thicker layer of memory foam in that system. With the softness of memory foam and its low level of responsiveness, the perimeter of the mattress can feel unstable, especially when sitting on the edge. People who weigh over 230 pounds are more likely to experience this reduced degree of edge support.
Amerisleep AS5
The top layer of foam in the AS5 is memory foam. With three inches of this material, the mattress has excellent properties of motion isolation. Because the underlying layer of ActiveFlex foam has more bounce, there is slightly more motion transfer on the AS5 than the AS3. Nevertheless, this mattress offers more than enough motion isolation to prevent sleep disruptions for almost all couples.
The AS5 has a robust comfort system that totals seven inches in thickness.
The three layers that compose that comfort system all play a part in generating significant pressure relief. Memory foam conforms to smooth out pressure points, ActiveFlex foam prevents the body from sinking out of line, and the zoned polyfoam tailors its feel to match five different sections of the body.
With all of these materials working in conjunction, the AS5 performs excellently in supporting spinal alignment.
Amerisleep has built features into the AS5 to fight sleeping hot, but on the whole, this mattress is still prone to heat retention. The breathable cover and open-cell foams can’t counteract the deep sink and subsequent reduction of airflow near the skin. While many people won’t find the AS5 to be too hot, its below-average temperature regulation is a potential problem for hot sleepers.
Edge support on the AS5 is around average for a foam model. While the memory foam layer sinks quite a bit around the edge, the ActiveFlex foam has more resilience to it, helping to hold up the perimeter and reduce a sense of instability when lying or sitting down at the edge.

The best way to start reviewing and evaluating the Amerisleep mattresses is by taking a close look at their construction.
Common Components in the Amerisleep Mattresses
Before getting into the design of each individual mattress, we’ll highlight some common components in all the Amerisleep beds:
- Cover: All Amerisleep mattresses are encased in covers made from blended cotton and polyester. The fabric is very soft and also breathable, which helps with surface-level temperature regulation.
- Bio-Pur memory foam: This is a type of viscoelastic foam (memory foam) that uses plant-based oils in place of some of the petrochemicals typically used in foam production. As a result, this material has a lower carbon footprint. Its open-cell structure is intended to enhance ventilation as well. The thickness and firmness of the Bio-Pur memory foam layer varies based on the Amerisleep mattress model; however, this foam has an above-average density of 4 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) and an ILD of 10. The higher density improves the durability of the mattress, and this ILD number offers a softer, more contouring feel.
- Polyfoam with Surface Modification Technology (SMT): This material is incorporated into all of the Amerisleep mattresses. The SMT design, which Amerisleep calls their HIVE technology, means that the foam is not uniform in its feel. Instead, there are five zones — head, shoulders/back, hips, upper leg/knees, lower leg — that are built to offer more or less cushioning to different parts of the body.
- Bio-Core polyfoam: This base polyfoam is used in the support core of the Amerisleep mattresses. Like the Bio-Pur foam, it replaces some petrochemicals with plant-based oils. Density and thickness for this foam varies based on the model.
With this information in mind, it’s easier to understand the details of how each Amerisleep mattress offering is constructed.
Amerisleep AS2
The AS2 is a three-layer mattress with a Medium Firm feel that is rated at around a 6 on the firmness scale.
Two different materials are used in the comfort system of the AS2. The topmost layer is two inches of Bio-Pur memory foam. The second layer is three inches of polyfoam zoned with SMT. This polyfoam has a density of 1.65 PCF and an ILD of 40.
The support core has a thickness of seven inches and is made up entirely of Bio-Core polyfoam with a density of 1.5 PCF and an ILD of 35.

Amerisleep AS5
The AS5 is the thickest all-foam Amerisleep mattress and includes a layer called ActiveFlex, which is a type of polyfoam with latex-like responsiveness. This means that it more quickly bounces back to its original shape, but it is still able to enhance overall mattress contouring.
A two-inch layer of ActiveFlex foam is used in the AS5 comfort system. It sits beneath a three-inch layer of the Bio-Pur memory foam and a two-inch layer of zoned polyfoam. The support core is seven inches of Bio-Core foam, giving the AS5 a total height of 14 inches.

The AS6 is the thickest of the Amerisleep mattresses and the only model that’s exclusively sold in hybrid form. This is also the only Amerisleep model with multiple firmness options.

- Meaningful pain relief. Many customers describe reductions in long-standing pain in their joints, including their hips, shoulders, and back. This pain relief may come from the close contouring and even weight distribution of memory foam.
- Excellent motion isolation. People who share an Amerisleep mattress find that there’s little-to-no motion transfer. The most motion transfer occurs on the AS2.
- Quiet performance. While this is to be expected of all-foam beds, customers, especially those used to sleeping on innerspring beds, praise the Amerisleep mattresses for remaining quiet through the night.
- Solid customer service. Buyers of all models indicate that Amerisleep provides quality customer care, even when customers have complaints or want to make a return. This is also reflected in Amerisleep’s “A” rating with the Better Business Bureau.
Though the reviews for the Amerisleep mattresses are quite positive, there are some complaints to be found:

- Temperature regulation issues. A known issue for memory foam beds, heat retention creeps up in a portion of reviews for the Amerisleep beds. These issues are greater for hot sleepers and on the models with thicker memory foam layers.

Amerisleep mattresses can be purchased online and in physical stores. Online sales are offered on the Amerisleep website as well as through Amazon. If purchasing through Amazon, be aware that all returns and service issues must be coordinated with Amazon and are subject to Amazon’s policies.
Shopping on the Amerisleep website is available to customers in all 50 U.S. states and some international locations. People outside the U.S. can check with Amerisleep directly about whether the company offers services in their country.
For in-person shopping, Amerisleep has 12 branded stores in the United States. An online store-finder feature on the Amerisleep website helps identify the closest showroom to any given zip code.
Shipping
Amerisleep provides free FedEx Ground shipping to all addresses in the contiguous United States. This standard shipping option means that the mattress is compressed tightly, wrapped in plastic, and put in a box that is delivered to your home. The mattress normally arrives within about a week after you have placed and paid for your order.
When the mattress arrives, you must carry the box into the room of your choice, open the packaging, and set the mattress up on your desired frame. Carrying and setting up the mattress usually requires two people.
Shipping is available to Alaska, Hawaii, and some international addresses for an added fee. Customers need to contact Amerisleep for information about shipping fees and timelines for locations outside the contiguous U.S.
Additional Services
At this time, Amerisleep does not offer any White Glove delivery services — such as installation or removal of an old mattress — when purchasing a mattress alone.

Sleep Trial
All of the Amerisleep mattress options come with a 100-night sleep trial. The company requires that you keep that mattress for 30 nights as a break-in period before asking for a return.
If you decide during the trial that you are not satisfied with the mattress, you can request a return, and Amerisleep will work with you to have a courier come to your home and pick up the mattress at no cost. You receive a full refund of the purchase price.
Warranty
Amerisleep backs their mattresses with a 20-year warranty that covers defects in materials and craftsmanship. This warranty is prorated with different terms during the first ten years compared to the second half of the warranty period.
During the first ten years, the company will repair or replace any mattress that is shown to be defective at no cost. During years 11 through 20, Amerisleep will provide a replacement mattress, but the customer is responsible for paying 50% of the original purchase price and a fee for shipping.
