Based in New York, WinkBeds is a direct-to-consumer mattress company that specializes in producing luxury mattresses at an affordable price point.

WinkBeds currently has three main models: the MemoryLux, the EcoCloud, and the WinkBed. The MemoryLux is an all-foam model, the EcoCloud is a latex hybrid mattress, and the WinkBed is a hybrid model.

The WinkBed Mattress comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and PLUS. The Softer version rates around 4 on the 10-point firmness scale, which means it has a medium-soft feel. The Luxury Firm comes in at a 6, so it can be considered medium-firm. The Firmer and PLUS options come in between 7 and 8, giving them a truly firm feel.

These firmness options vary in constructions to achieve the intended feel. The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options contain polyfoam, microcoils, and a pocketed coil core. The PLUS version of the mattress uses polyfoam, latex, and a pocketed coil core.

In this review, we’ll detail the construction of the WinkBed Mattress, review its performance, provide information on its pricing, and share what customers like about the mattress.

WinkBed Mattress Review Breakdown

The WinkBed is a hybrid model with four firmness options, including Softer (4), Luxury Firm (6), Firmer (7-8), and PLUS (7-8). The construction and materials vary between these firmness options.

Each WinkBed Mattress uses a Tencel cover. This natural fabric is derived from eucalyptus and is crafted to sleep cool by wicking away excessive heat.

The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the mattress have a quilted Euro-pillow top with gel-infused polyfoam. This material contours to the sleeper’s body to relieve pressure points, and the gel-infusion pulls heat away. The Softer version uses three layers in its pillow top, while the Luxury Firm and Firmer versions use two layers.

Next, the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the mattress have a layer of pocketed microcoils for extra air circulation. The Softer option also includes a 2-inch layer of transition polyfoam to separate the comfort system from the core.

The PLUS option uses a unique comfort system with a layer of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) polyfoam and a 2.5-inch layer of latex. The PCF rating of the polyfoam indicates that it is high-density, which makes it more durable and less likely to form lasting impressions. The latex layer provides deeper contouring and extra bounce while allowing for airflow.

Each mattress has a zoned, pocketed coil system to provide targeted support designed to promote proper spinal alignment. The pocketing of the coils reduces motion transfer within the layer. The PLUS option bands these pocketed coils together in groups of four for extra support.

All of the firmness options measure 13.5 inches thick, so the WinkBed Mattress can be considered a high-profile model. Because it is thicker than average, the WinkBed Mattress may require extra deep sheets.

Mattress Performance

  • Motion Isolation

All of the firmness options of the WinkBed have better motion isolation than some hybrid models on the market. However, the Softer version excels the most in this category.

The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options have Euro-style pillow tops with multiple layers of polyfoam. These layers absorb a significant amount of motion, reducing the vibrations that travel across the surface of the mattress. A layer of pocketed microcoils has some bounce, but since the coils move independently, very little transfer occurs. The Softer version of the mattress absorbs more motion than the other firmness options because of its soft feel and its extra transition layer of polyfoam.

The PLUS version of the mattress’s polyfoam and latex comfort layers also absorb a significant amount of motion, though not to the extent of the Softer version.

Each firmness option uses a coil core. This gives the mattress some bounce, which could contribute to motion transfer. However, these coils are pocketed to restrict the spread of motion. Additionally, the mattress’s comfort system is substantial enough to dampen motion transfer emanating from the core.

Since the WinkBed limits the vibrations that spread across the surface of the bed when one partner moves, it may provide a more restful night’s sleep for some couples.

  • Pressure Relief

Like many hybrid models, the WinkBed’s contouring can help relieve a sleeper’s pressure points.

The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the mattress have a pillow top and a layer of microcoils to cradle the sleeper. This can relieve pressure from a sleeper’s wider, heavier body parts by redistributing their body weight.

The PLUS version of the mattress uses a layer of polyfoam and a layer of latex for contouring. The polyfoam cushions pressure points, while the latex spreads the sleeper’s body weight over a wider surface area. Some sleepers feel that sleeping on latex creates a floating sensation while preventing pressure buildup.

Additionally, all of the firmness options use zoning in the coil core for more targeted support. This reduces the risk of the sleeper’s hips sinking in excessively and putting the spine out of alignment.

  • Temperature Control

Hybrid mattresses tend to be more breathable than all-foam models, and the same is true of the WinkBed. The WinkBed should help most people who tend to sleep hot stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

All of the firmness options use a Tencel cover. This material pulls heat away from the sleeper’s body for a cooler night’s sleep.

The pillow tops of the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options use gel-infused polyfoam, which is engineered to redistribute body heat rather than trapping it against the sleeper’s body. The microcoil layer allows additional air circulation so that heat can dissipate away from the mattress.

The PLUS version uses a layer of polyfoam and a layer of latex in its comfort system. Polyfoam tends to be more breathable than memory foam, so it should not trap a lot of heat against the sleeper’s body. The open-cell structure of latex makes it exceptionally breathable, so air circulation through the material can help relieve heat buildup.

Each mattress also uses a coil core, which allows significant air circulation, further cooling the mattress.

  • Edge Support

While many hybrid models have sturdy edges, the WinkBed’s perimeter is exceptionally supportive.

The WinkBed Mattress uses an Extra-Edge support system within its coil core. Narrower coils line the perimeter of the mattress to give it a sturdier feel.

Because the WinkBed’s edge is reinforced, most sleepers are likely to feel secure enough to use the full mattress surface, including sitting or sleeping near the perimeter.

Due to its medium-soft feel, the edge of the Softer version of the mattress may not seem quite as sturdy as the Luxury Firm, Firmer, and PLUS versions. However, it is still likely to feel supportive enough for most individuals.

  • Ease of Movement

The three softest versions of the WinkBed Mattress couple polyfoam and microcoils in their comfort layers, which return to their original shape quickly when a sleeper moves. This gives it a more responsive feel than many hybrid mattresses, especially those with thick comfort systems of close-conforming memory foam, making it easier to move around on the surface.

Since the Softer option has an extra layer of transition polyfoam and more give, sleepers may experience slightly more resistance when they try to move.

The PLUS version of the mattress may also be more challenging to change position on. Comfort layers of polyfoam and latex are firm and relatively responsive, but they don’t have the same springiness as the microcoil layer of the Luxury Firm and Firmer options.

  • Sex

With coils in both the comfort and support layers, the three softest versions of the WinkBed Mattress have a bouncier feel than many hybrid mattresses. The PLUS version of the mattress swaps out the microcoil layer in the comfort system for a latex layer that is also quite responsive. This may make any version of the WinkBed Mattress a good surface for sexual activity since many couples appreciate a springy surface.

While all four versions of the mattress can offer some distinct benefits, the Softer option may be least conducive to sex. Individuals sink in more, which may make it harder to change position. However, the extra contouring can also contribute to more traction.

  • Off-Gassing

All versions of the WinkBed Mattress contain synthetic foam and ship compressed, which may contribute to a slight initial odor. However, this smell is likely to be less significant and dissipate more quickly than many hybrid models.

The two coil layers in the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the mattress permit a lot of airflow, which can help any potential odors air out more quickly. The PLUS version is slightly less breathable, so it may take longer to lose its faint initial “new mattress smell.”

New mattress odors are generally seen as harmless for most people, and they should disperse within a few hours to a few days.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
Each of the firmness options of the WinkBed may excel for side sleepers in some weight groups. The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the mattress have a Euro-style pillow top that cushions the surface, while a microcoil layer contours more deeply to relieve pressure from their shoulders and hips. A zoned coil core gives extra support near the sleeper’s midsection to support proper spinal alignment. The PLUS version uses a layer of polyfoam for cushioning and zoned latex and coil layers for added support and pressure relief.

How each mattress firmness performs for side sleeping is likely to vary based on the individual’s weight. The Softer version of the WinkBed may be best suited for side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. The Luxury Firm should accommodate side sleepers from all weight groups, but it may be most comfortable for those who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds. The Firmer and PLUS options should be a good fit for most side sleepers who weigh over 200 pounds.

Mattresses that are firmer than ideal may contribute to pressure buildup around the hips and shoulders, while mattresses that are too soft may make it more difficult for side sleepers to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Back Sleepers:
The four firmness options of the WinkBed can give back sleepers the even support they need, but the balance of cushioning and support an individual experiences will vary based primarily on their weight. Too firm of a mattress could feel hard and lead to some pressure near the sleeper’s hips, while too soft of a mattress may allow the hips to sink in too deeply and put a strain on the sleeper’s spine.

Since the Softer version of the WinkBed has a plusher feel, it may be a good match for back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. The Luxury Firm version is also particularly appropriate for sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. Back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds may find the Firmer version most comfortable. Individuals who weigh over 200 pounds may like the Firmer or PLUS option for their extra support.

Every version of the WinkBed Mattress uses zoning in its coil layer to reduce the likelihood of a back sleeper’s hips sinking in excessively. Since the PLUS version is constructed for larger individuals, it also uses zoning in its latex layer for extra support where back sleepers need it most.

Stomach Sleepers:
Since individuals tend to carry much of their body weight near their bellies and hips, stomach sleepers usually need enough support to prevent their midsections from sagging into the mattress. While too soft of a mattress could contribute to spinal strain, stomach sleepers usually like some cushioning.

The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the WinkBed have good cushioning from their Euro-style pillow tops. A layer of polyfoam softens the surface of the PLUS. All versions of the WinkBed have zoning in their coil cores to bolster the support for a sleeper’s hips. The WinkBed PLUS also uses zoning in its latex layer for extra support for heavier individuals.

Because of their differences in firmness, each version of the WinkBed Mattress may be better suited for some weight groups than others. Stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may find the Softer version most comfortable. Those who weigh over 130 pounds may prefer the Firmer or PLUS versions of the mattress.
