Hybrids are known for their temperature control, and the Emma Hybrid Comfort is no exception. A moisture-wicking cover, gel-infused memory foam, and airflow through the coils help the mattress stay cool overnight. The Hybrid Comfort also holds up well around the edges, making it easier to get in and out of bed.

Emma is an online mattress manufacturer with a lineup of beds that caters to a wide range of sleepers. The company has three models in its product line and also offers accessories like bed bases, bedding, and pillows.

We’ll take a deep dive into the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress, which is the company’s mid-range model. This medium firm (6) mattress features a foam comfort system and a support core of pocketed coils and thick base foam.

We’ll explain how the mattress fared during performance testing in our sleep lab and incorporate feedback from our testers into our review. We’ll also explore which types of sleepers can benefit most from this model and whether or not this mattress is compatible with your favorite sleeping position.

To help you make an informed decision, we’ll take a look at Emma’s pricing, as well as the company’s return and sleep trial policies.

Note: As of January 2025, the Emma Hybrid Comfort and other Emma mattresses will only be sold in Canada and are not available to shoppers in the U.S.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Jeremy Klein

Senior Product Testing Manager

Side sleeper

Nightly melatonin user

“I like how the Emma Hybrid Comfort feels like a traditional all-foam mattress even though it contains coils. There’s deep cushioning and very little motion transfer compared to a lot of other hybrids we’ve tested.”

“Echoing what Jeremy said, this mattress doesn’t feel like your typical hybrid, but that doesn’t mean it sinks too much either. I felt nicely supported from head to toe.”

“One thing I really appreciate about this mattress is its resistance to heat buildup. Sure, there’s some surface-level warmth, but not enough to be bothersome or disrupt my sleep.”

Side Sleepers

The Emma Hybrid Comfort offers many benefits for side sleepers and is particularly suitable for those who weigh 130 pounds or more. The zoned coil system offers enhanced pushback for the lumbar region, while the foam comfort layers cushion the hips and shoulders without allowing them to sink too deeply. Together, the coils and foam are an excellent combination for maintaining spinal alignment and relieving pressure points.

Though most of the side sleepers on our team enjoyed the Emma Hybrid Comfort, it was a bit too firm for those under 130 pounds. Side sleepers within this weight group typically prefer the deeper cushioning of a softer model.

Back Sleepers

The Emma Hybrid Comfort earned high marks among many of the back sleepers on our testing team. The medium firm feel balances sturdy support with plenty of cushioning, which is best suited for back sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds.

The zoned coil support core adapts to the body, helping to keep the spine supported and properly aligned. Softer foams in the comfort system cradle the lumbar spine to prevent pressure buildup.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically favor mattresses with robust support and a firm feel. A mattress that’s too soft allows sinking in the midsection, which can cause misalignment in the spine.

Stomach sleepers often prefer hybrid mattresses, because the coils provide sturdier support to prevent sinking in the midsection. This helps keep the spine on an even plane. Our stomach sleeping testers of 130 pounds or more found that the Emma Hybrid Comfort provided decent spinal support. Those below 130 pounds also received solid support, but found the mattress a little too firm.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6 / 10

“Compared to other hybrids, the Emma Hybrid Comfort isolates motion very well. However, there’s still some motion transfer from the coils.” – Jeremy

Our testing team found that the pocketed coil support core gives the mattress a somewhat bouncy feel and allows motion to transfer from one side of the mattress to the other.

If you’re a particularly light sleeper who wakes easily when your partner moves, this mattress may feel too responsive for your needs. The memory foam and polyfoam layers in the comfort system absorb some motion, but they aren’t thick enough to fully buffer co-sleepers from each other’s movements. Overall, this model is best suited to those who are okay with some motion transferring across the bed.

Pressure Relief

6.5 / 10

“The Hybrid Comfort alleviates some pressure, but people who want a mattress that hugs their body should opt for a softer hybrid or an all-foam model.” – Jackson

This mattress provides moderate pressure relief, but it may not be substantial enough for people who are prone to painful pressure points. If you’re a side sleeper under 130 pounds or someone with significant joint pain, you may want to consider a bed that contours more closely.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress has three foam layers in the comfort system, including one made from memory foam. These layers offer some pressure relief by cushioning the body and adapting to your shape, which helps prevent sore spots from developing. Ultimately, though, the foam doesn’t offer the deep contouring and hugging effect provided by beds with thicker and plusher foam layers.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

“I didn’t feel much heat buildup on the Emma Hybrid Comfort, so this mattress should be a good match for people who feel overly warm sleeping on foam.” – Logan

While the Emma Hybrid Comfort sleeps cooler than most all-foam models, hot sleepers may still find it sleeps warmer than the average hybrid.

The bed’s hybrid design allows air to flow freely through the coils in the support core. The mattress also has a moisture-wicking cover and foam layers with an open-cell structure engineered to stay cooler than traditional foam. However, some heat does linger around the sleeper’s body, particularly for sleepers over 230 pounds who sink further into the bed.

Edge Support

7 / 10

“Edge support is somewhat limited since the coils are on the thinner side. That said, I didn’t notice an excessive amount of compression when I sat along the perimeter.” – Jeremy

The Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress provides average edge support. While the foam layers sink somewhat under pressure, the pocketed coils in the support core help strengthen the perimeter of the mattress. Most sleepers are able to get in and out of bed or lie near the edge without feelings of roll-off.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

“People who weigh more than 230 pounds may struggle to move on the Emma Hybrid Comfort, but there’s enough spring to the surface that others shouldn’t have much trouble.” – Jackson

Our testers found it fairly easy to move around the surface of the Emma Hybrid Comfort. Although the adaptive properties of the foam layers inhibit movement to a certain degree, having the memory foam in the second layer helps fight the quicksand feeling that sometimes occurs with memory foam models. The support core also contains pocketed coils that are slightly bouncy.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is best suited to those who want a bed that balances responsiveness and motion isolation. You won’t feel like you’re “trapped” in the foam layers, but you also won’t experience the bouncy feel that traditional innerspring mattresses often have.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

“Off-gassing odor can be strong for the first few nights. I recommend airing out the mattress in a well-ventilated room until the smells have cleared out.” – Logan

The Emma Hybrid Comfort, like many other foam hybrid models, releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after it’s unboxed and unrolled. The odor can be unpleasant if you’re sensitive to smells.

To reduce these off-gassing odors, set your mattress up in a well-ventilated area and wait at least a few hours before use. Hybrid mattresses tend to off-gas faster than all-foam mattresses thanks to air flowing through the coils, but it may still take up to two days for smells to completely dissipate.

Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress Review Breakdown

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is a hybrid mattress with five layers and a 13-inch profile.  The mattress is encased in a machine-washable cover made of polyester, featuring an anti-slip bottom and handles that make it easier to rotate.

The comfort system consists of three layers. The top layer is made from polyfoam with an open-cell composition that’s designed to trap less heat than conventional foams. Next is a memory foam layer that distributes weight evenly and isolates motion. This is followed by another polyfoam layer, which offers gentle contouring while buffering your body from the support layers beneath.

The support core has two layers, one made from pocketed coils and the other from polyfoam. The pocketed coils are divided into seven zones that provide enhanced support to your lower back and extra cushioning to areas like the shoulders and hips. The zoned construction helps keep your spine aligned.

Beneath the coils is a high-density polyfoam layer that stabilizes the mattress and promotes durability. This layer is just over 3 inches thick, which is thicker than usual for a hybrid base layer.

Overall, the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress has a medium firm (6) feel. This is considered the universal standard that works for the widest range of body types and sleeping positions.
