Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
The Natural Escape from My Green Mattress is a durable latex hybrid that offers gentle contouring and sturdy overall support. Breathable materials also help ensure excellent temperature control.

Side Sleepers
Our testing found that the Natural Escape works well for most side sleepers, but it’s best suited to those between 130 and 230 pounds. Some side sleepers over 230 pounds may find it a bit too soft, and some under 130 pounds will find it a touch too firm.
When side sleeping, it’s important to have enough cushioning to accommodate the hips and shoulders. But too much plushness can result in sagging, putting excessive bend in the spine. Based on our tests, the Natural Escape hits the supportive sweet spot for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
Back Sleepers
The Natural Escape strikes a great balance for most back sleepers with just enough pressure relief and firmness to support spinal alignment. We found that the light contouring of the latex cushions the lower back of back sleepers, while the resilient latex and robust coils kept the mattress surface even so the spine remained in a neutral position.
Some back sleepers under 130 pounds said they would prefer a mattress with just a tad more cushioning, while some over 230 pounds said firmer feel would be ideal. But both groups said that the Natural Escape offered quality support.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleeping is the least common position, and without the right type of mattress, it can be uncomfortable. We found that the Natural Escape offers good support to stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. Those between 130 and 230 pounds said the support was adequate, but those over 230 pounds felt the mattress was too soft.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6
/ 10
“With a mattress that’s this springy, some motion transfer is inevitable. I wasn’t bothered much by it, but it’s noticeable.” – Colin
The Natural Escape mattress provides below-average motion isolation. In our testing, the bounciness of the latex layer caused some vibrations to travel across the surface. For most couples, this level of motion transfer shouldn’t be too disruptive. But if you or your bed partner are easily awakened or move around a lot in bed, you may benefit from a mattress that provides better motion isolation.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
“The Natural Escape doesn’t have a cloud-like feel, but I still found it to be effective at minimizing impact and pressure around my joints.” – Mary
Based on our testing, the Natural Escape ranks about average for pressure relief. Latex offers modest contouring, and the zoned pocketed coils give some tailored support to key areas of the body. That said, this mattress does not deeply hug or conform to the body. As a result, the perception of comfort and pressure relief from this mattress varies considerably based on sleeping position and body weight.
Temperature Control
8.5
/ 10
“This is one of the cooler mattresses I’ve slept on. It seems like every aspect of the mattress construction contributes to reduced heat buildup.” – Brad
Temperature control is a major strength of the Natural Escape Mattress. All of the materials used in the mattress either promote breathability or are naturally resistant to heat buildup.
The cotton and wool in the cover are naturally moisture-wicking, which means they pull sweat away from the body and help your body stay cool. Latex doesn’t collect much heat, and the tall layer of coils enables significant airflow to keep warmth from building up in the mattress overnight.
Edge Support
7
/ 10
“With the Natural Escape Mattress, I felt very confident that I could sit on the edge of the bed without it giving out underneath me.” – Colin
Above-average edge support helps make the Natural Escape a good fit for people who often sleep or sit near the edge of their bed. The bed’s dependable edge support starts in the innerspring layer, where thicker coils line the perimeter. Dunlop latex doesn’t compress as deeply as materials like memory foam, which also helps maintain stability around the edge.
Ease of Movement
8
/ 10
“When I wanted to roll over or adjust my sleep posture, it felt like the mattress was working with me rather than fighting against my movement.” – Brad
Ease of movement is a standout feature of this mattress. Latex is widely known to have a springy feel, and the way the coils compress and rebound enhances the ease of movement. Plus, the soft, inviting feel of the wool and cotton reduces friction when changing sleeping positions. All of these elements make the Natural Escape a great pick for active and combination sleepers.
Off-Gassing
8
/ 10
“The chemical-free and foam-free design leads to a noticeable decrease in odor from this mattress compared to most hybrid and memory foam beds.” – Mary
A major benefit of the Natural Escape is that it’s made without chemicals normally found in the foams or adhesives of other mattresses. This means very few smelly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released when you unpack the Natural Escape. While you may notice a light “new mattress smell” that some customers describe as earthy or rubbery, the smell is subtle and shouldn’t last more than a few hours.
My Green Mattress Natural Escape Mattress Review Breakdown
The Natural Escape is an 11-inch hybrid mattress that’s medium firm, or a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. It includes a thick layer of organic latex on top of a base of supportive pocketed coils. Button-tufting prevents bunching and holds the layers together without the need for chemical adhesives.
The cover of the mattress is made of organic cotton with organic wool backing. Both of these materials have been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning they meets demanding standards in its production from start to finish. These materials also offer light softness, breathability, and natural temperature regulation.
The comfort system is made of a 3-inch layer of natural latex that’s certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), a similar standard as GOTS but for latex materials. It has above-average density, making it durable and bouncy with only light contouring. And the support core features 8-inch pocketed innerspring coils, which are thicker around the edges and beneath your midsection.
The Natural Escape is offered in all six standard sizes, plus a full XL size, which is five inches longer than a standard full. The dimensions for each size are listed below.
