Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank collection is a line of mattresses designed for those who want a bed with uncompromising support. The Plank Firm, Plank Firm Luxe, and Plank Firm Natural are all flippable models that feature two sleep surfaces and firmness levels ranging from medium firm to extra firm.

The all-foam Plank Firm is an affordable all-foam model, while the Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid mattress with a foam comfort system and a pocketed coil support core. We’ll focus on the Plank Firm Natural, a flippable hybrid mattress made with organic and durable materials.

We’ll highlight the Plank Firm Natural’s pros and cons and what types of sleepers are best suited to its unique feel and construction. We’ll also provide detailed information about its price-point, materials, and durability so that you can decide if it’s the right fit for you.

  • Choose Medium Firm if…you want moderate pressure relief and a slightly softer sleep surface. The medium firm side is also a great pick for back sleepers across all weight groups.
  • Choose Firm if… you want a truly firm sleep surface and extra-strong support. The firm option is better suited to back and stomach sleepers, as it has minimal cushioning.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The Plank Firm Natural minimizes movement, but its latex layers and pocketed coil support core permit a bit of motion transfer. When sleeping on this model, sleepers may notice that some movement carries from one side of the bed to the other.

However, the individually wrapped pocketed coils within the support core do keep motion relatively isolated. Very light sleepers may notice their partner’s movements, but most of our testers found this model isolated motion adequately.

Sleepers may want to consider an all-foam mattress if motion isolation is one of their top priorities.

Pressure Relief

Medium Firm: 3 / 5

Firm: 2 / 5

Both sides of this mattress have latex comfort layers that aim to relieve pressure points. Our testers found the medium firm side’s softer latex layer was more successful at preventing sore spots than the firm option. People prone to pressure points should opt for the medium firm side, as the firm surface offers very little cushioning or contouring.

Latex is excellent at distributing weight evenly, which can help alleviate aches and pains. Due to its firm construction, it lacks the deep contouring of mattresses with thicker layers of latex or memory foam.

Temperature Control

Testing indicated that this mattress was excellent at regulating temperature. The latex doesn’t retain significant heat, and the pocketed coil support core allows air to flow within the mattress.

Latex mattresses rarely sleep hot, and this model is no exception. Like the support core, the latex layers allow air to circulate, which helps prevent sleepers from overheating. Additionally, the cotton and wool cover wicks away excess moisture to keep the sleep surface cool and dry.

Overall, our testers found the Plank Firm Natural was a great choice for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

This mattress has strong edge support thanks to a reinforced perimeter and buoyant latex layer. The medium firm and firm sleep surfaces both offer consistent support across the mattress. The latex comfort system also helps prevent sagging, even if you sleep at the mattress’ edge.

The support core’s coils are heavy duty and bolstered around the edges, allowing sleepers to use the entire mattress without sinking into it.

Our testers noticed very little compression when they applied weight directly to the mattress’ edge, making the Plank Firm Natural a worthwhile choice for those who have trouble getting in and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

Our testing team found the combination of latex and pocketed coils made this an exceptionally easy mattress to move around on. Latex comes from the same trees as rubber and has a similar bouncy quality.

The pocketed coil support core creates a responsive base for the latex that kept our testers situated comfortably atop the mattress. Most sleepers should find it easy to shift sleeping positions on this bed. It’s also an excellent pick for people who prefer a mattress with a responsive feel.

Sex

When choosing a mattress that works well for sex, it’s important to choose a model with strong edge support and a responsive feel. Though everyone has their own preferences, these two qualities make it easier to use the entire mattress without sinking into its layers.

The Plank Firm Natural is quite easy to move on and rated for up to 950 pounds. It also offers consistent support across the entire mattress surface, giving people plenty of room for intimacy without excessive edge compression or sagging. Additionally, the latex and pocketed coils help prevent heat buildup.

Off-Gassing

Latex can release a rubbery odor when unboxed, especially if it’s compressed before shipment. The scent isn’t considered harmful but can be unpleasant for people with odor sensitivities.

Those who are very sensitive to smells may want to set the mattress up with bedroom windows open. The smell should dissipate within several days of being unboxed.

Side Sleepers

Overall, the side sleepers on our testing team found this mattress a comfortable fit, but it’s better suited to those who weigh above 130 pounds. The medium firm and firm Talalay latex formulations don’t offer the deep contouring and pressure relief that side sleepers under 130 pounds need to prevent pressure points. The medium firm side offers adequate cushioning for side sleepers under 130 pounds. However, most side sleepers on our team in this weight category preferred a softer mattress

The medium firm side was an excellent fit for side sleepers on our testing team who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. Its combination of strong support and even weight distribution encouraged spinal alignment for sleepers in this weight group. Those above 230 pounds also reported that it was a top-notch pick, though our testers in this group liked both the medium firm and firm sides equally.

Back Sleepers

The Plank Firm Natural’s two firmness levels both offer exceptional support for back sleepers. During our testing, testers in every weight group reported top scores after trying the medium firm model. Back sleepers typically prefer a mattress that supports spine alignment while cushioning the lower back, and we found this mattress managed to strike that balance quite well.

The firm side also suited back sleepers on our team, especially those above 130 pounds. Those within this weight group scored it just as highly as the medium firm side. It was slightly less comfortable for those under 130 pounds, who preferred the medium firm side’s softer Talalay latex comfort system.

Stomach Sleepers

Overall, this mattress is very well suited to stomach sleepers. It has the even and consistent support that these sleeper types need to keep the spine in alignment. When stomach sleepers use a mattress that’s too soft, it allows their midsections to sink into the bed, which can result in discomfort and back aches. Testing indicated the Plank Firm Natural Mattress is firm enough on both sides to prevent this.

Testers over 130 pounds scored both sides highly. Stomach sleepers above 230 pounds  preferred the firm side a bit more than the medium firm, while stomach sleepers under 130 pounds enjoyed the medium firm side’s slightly deeper contouring.

Plank Firm Natural Mattress Review Breakdown

The Plank Firm Natural Mattress is a flippable hybrid with dual firmness levels. One side has a medium firm (6) feel, while the other is firm (8). Both surfaces feature the same comfort layer materials in different formulations, which give each side a distinct feel. In total, this mattress measures 13.25 inches tall and is designed to support up to 950 pounds.

Both sides begin with a cover composed of quilted organic wool and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. It feels soft to the touch and offers a bit of cushioning, but not so much that it affects the mattress’ overall firmness level.

Beneath the cover on each side is 1.5 inches of Talalay latex certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for ethical production. The medium firm side has a slightly softer formulation that provides more pressure relief than the firm surface. Though the two sides have different firmness levels, the latex provides responsive support and promotes easy movement on both surfaces.

The shared support core is crafted from 8 inches of Brooklyn Bedding’s proprietary pocketed coil system, TitanCaliber. Each coil is individually wrapped to allow them to move separately from one another rather than as an entire unit. This minimizes motion transfer and provides varying levels of support to different areas of the body. The coils are also reinforced around the perimeter of the mattress to increase edge support.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Brooklyn Bedding has a reputation for manufacturing high-quality mattresses at affordable prices. While the Plank Firm Natural Mattress is more expensive than many all-foam mattresses, it’s priced quite competitively when compared to other hybrid models, especially those that feature latex and organic materials.

Our durability testing also indicated that this model should last around seven to eight years, which is longer than the average hybrid. This makes the Plank Firm Natural a great value for those seeking a long-lasting organic mattress

The Plank Firm Natural is available in six standard sizes. All sizes are 13.25 inches tall and should fit well within the pocket depth of most standard fitted sheets.
