Bear Elite Hybrid Review Breakdown

The Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress is a high-end mattress with zoned support and a cooling design. Bear offers the Elite Hybrid in three firmness options: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8) to suit a wide range of sleepers.

The cover uses a synthetic blend of polyester, Celliant, and phase change material. This advanced construction is intended to feel soft on the skin, provide additional plushness, and prevent sleepers from overheating.

The Bear Elite Hybrid features a two-layer comfort system. The top layer consists of highly contouring copper-infused memory foam designed to help keep sleepers cool. Below that, a layer of zoned polyfoam features contour cuts to target pressure relief and increase airflow throughout the mattress.

The bulk of the support core consists of individually wrapped coils for durable support and a slight bounce. A final layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the base of the mattress, providing additional durability and support. Together, the layers of the Bear Elite Hybrid create a 14-inch, high-profile sleep surface.

Bear includes two free pillows, a sheet set, and mattress protector with a purchase of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress. Shoppers can also upgrade to a premium sleep bundle that includes two cooling foam pillows, a sheet set, and a waterproof mattress protector for a discounted price.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

3/5 (luxury firm); 4/5 (luxury plush); 3/5 (extra firm)
The substantial foam comfort system of the Bear Elite Hybrid provides very good motion isolation, which is a noteworthy feature among hybrid beds. The individually pocketed coils prevent motion transfer.

The Bear Elite Hybrid features a plush, quilted cover as well as a layer of memory foam and a layer of polyfoam. These foam layers help absorb and isolate motion on the bed’s surface. As a result, sleepers are less likely to disturb their partner when tossing and turning or getting in and out of bed.

Each firmness option of the Bear Elite Hybrid provides good motion isolation. However, the luxury plush option particularly excels in this category due to softer foam layers that offer extra contouring and isolate motion.

Pressure Relief

3/5 (luxury firm); 4/5 (luxury plush); 3/5 (extra firm)
The Bear Elite Hybrid is equipped with a cushioned cover, memory foam layer, and zoned polyfoam layer. This advanced comfort system does a very good job at relieving pressure for sleepers.

The Bear Elite’s top layer of memory foam cushions each part of the body. The second layer of polyfoam features five distinct zones that target pressure relief in key areas like the shoulders and hips. The quilted cover adds an extra layer of plushness.

The Bear Elite Hybrid luxury plush model offers the greatest amount of pressure relief due to its softer construction. The extra firm and luxury firm options offer a balance between cushioning and support. Although these two options work well to relieve pressure, they are noticeably firmer than the luxury plush model.

Temperature Control

4/5 (luxury firm); 3/5 (luxury plush); 4/5 (extra firm)
Certain mattress materials tend to absorb and retain body heat, which can cause sleepers to overheat and wake up in an uncomfortable sweat. The Bear Elite Hybrid is designed to prevent this problem.

Each layer of the Bear Elite Hybrid was designed with temperature control in mind. The combination of polyester, Celliant, and phase change material in the cover is intended to help regulate body temperature throughout the night.

The copper-infused memory foam is designed to reduce heat retention. Cutouts in the polyfoam layer, combined with the pocketed coils in the support core, increase airflow throughout the mattress, helping to keep sleepers cool.

Each Bear Elite Hybrid firmness option shares a similar cooling construction. However, the luxury plush model features softer, highly contouring foam layers. While the softer sleep surface does provide good temperature regulation, it retains more body heat than the luxury firm and extra firm models.

Edge Support

4/5 (luxury firm); 3/5 (luxury plush); 4/5 (extra firm)
Edge support refers to how well a mattress can support a sleeper’s body weight along the perimeter. This feature can increase the usable surface area of your mattress. Good edge support also makes it easier to sit at the edge of a bed.

Like other hybrid beds, the Bear Elite Hybrid provides a good level of edge support. This is due to its sturdy support core, which features a thick layer of pocketed coils and a high-density polyfoam base.

Softer beds typically have less edge support, and the Bear Elite Hybrid is no exception. While the extra firm and luxury firm models offer very good edge support, the luxury plush option uses a softer construction and is slightly less supportive at the bed’s edge.

Ease of Movement

4/5 (luxury firm); 2/5 (luxury plush); 4/5 (extra firm)
While contouring mattress layers hug the body and relieve pressure, they can also give sleepers the feeling of sinking into the mattress. The Bear Elite Hybrid, however, offers a balance between contouring and ease of movement.

The comfort system in the luxury firm and extra firm models offer moderate cushioning that relieves pressure without hindering movement. The pocketed coil support core provides a responsive feel that makes it easier to move across the surface of the bed. Changing sleep positions and getting in and out of bed requires less effort with the luxury firm and extra firm models.

However, movement is not as effortless on the luxury plush model. While the softer comfort system offers deeper contouring and better pressure relief, it also makes it more difficult to move across the surface of the bed.

Sex

3/5 (luxury firm); 3/5 (luxury plush); 4/5 (extra firm)
The Bear Elite Hybrid’s advanced comfort system and quilted cover offer a plush surface that prevents painful pressure points from forming during intimate activities. The cooling design also helps disperse body heat. Additionally, the coiled support core provides a resilient bounce that makes changing positions easier.

All three firmness options work well for sex. However, the extra firm model may be the most comfortable for sexual activity since it offers superior ease of movement, temperature regulation, and edge support.

Off-Gassing

When they are first unwrapped and start to decompress, many new mattresses produce an odor through a process called off-gassing. The Bear Elite Hybrid undergoes a modest amount of off-gassing, most likely due to the foam layers in the comfort system of the bed.

Off-gassing is harmless, but it can be irritating if you’re sensitive to strong odors. Additionally, certain materials like synthetic foams are more prone to off-gassing. The hybrid construction of the Bear Elite Hybrid features less foam than all-foam mattresses. It also allows for significant airflow through the layers of the mattress. As a result, the odor dissolves relatively quickly after unboxing.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers: Side sleeping is the most popular sleep position. However, this sleep position places a great deal of pressure on the hips and shoulders. Without the right level of cushioning, side sleepers are prone to developing painful pressure points.

The Bear Elite Hybrid does an excellent job of providing pressure relief for the hips and shoulders. The bed’s memory foam and zoned polyfoam comfort layers contour and cushion the hips and shoulders while supporting the back. Combined with the substantial layer of pocketed coils, the Bear Elite Hybrid feels supple yet supportive while preventing sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

With three firmness levels to choose from, the Bear Elite Hybrid works well for side sleepers of all body weights. The softer feel of the luxury plush option is best for side sleepers under 130 pounds, and the luxury firm works well for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. The extra firm model provides added support for side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers require a mattress that supports the lower back. Without proper support, the lower back can sag into the mattress. This disrupts the natural curvature of the spine and may cause back pain. The Bear Elite Hybrid works well for all types of sleepers but may be most comfortable for back sleepers.

The Bear Elite’s design delivers good support to the lumbar region. The bed’s two-layer comfort system also offers targeted support to the lower back while cushioning key pressure points.

Overall, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a comfortable sleep surface for back sleepers of all weights. Our sleep testers found that the luxury plush option is best suited for back sleepers under 130 pounds. However, the luxury firm and extra firm models offered versatile comfort, making them good choices for back sleeping couples who have a large weight gap.

Stomach Sleepers: Of all sleepers, stomach sleepers usually require the most support since sagging around the midsection can throw the spine out of alignment and strain the lower back. The Bear Elite Hybrid does a good job of supporting stomach sleepers, regardless of body weight.

The combination of contouring memory foam and responsive support from the pocketed coils works well for most stomach sleepers. This design allows the Bear Elite Hybrid to relieve pressure at the hips and shoulders while supporting the midsection. The extra firm option performed the best for stomach sleepers of all body weights.
