Helix creates comfortable, quality mattresses that meet the needs of a wide variety of sleep styles, body types, and lifestyles. In addition to the two main collections — Helix and Helix Luxe — the company also offers the Helix Kids Mattress, a mattress designed to meet the needs of growing children. The flippable mattress includes a medium soft (4) and a medium firm (6) side, allowing kids to adjust the firmness level as they age for optimal support and comfort.

To protect against stains and odors, Helix tops the mattress with a silky soft Tencel cover treated with an eco-friendly water-repellent finish and an AEGIS Microbe Shield treatment. The hybrid mattress features dense polyfoam on the medium firm side and contouring memory foam on the medium soft side. Both sides share a responsive and durable pocketed coil support core.

We’ll discuss the pricing, sizing, and performance of the Helix Kids Mattress. We’ll also explore the company’s policies on shipping and returns, along with other factors to help you decide if it’s right for your child.

Side Sleepers

The Helix Kids Mattress works best for side sleepers, offering good overall support. The individually wrapped coils in the support core independently respond to body weight and movement, cradling key pressure points and encouraging proper posture. Meanwhile, the hugging memory foam on the medium soft side cushions the body, creating excellent support and comfort for side sleepers.

The bed performs well for side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Those over 130 pounds may also enjoy sleeping on this mattress. However, the medium firm side of the mattress may not comfortably cushion all side sleepers. Heavier sleepers and older children may prefer the medium soft side of the bed due to its softer comfort layer.

Back Sleepers

While back sleepers don’t require the same amount of pressure relief as side sleepers, they usually receive the best support from a medium firm bed. The dense polyfoam on the medium firm side distributes weight evenly across the bed’s surface, while the pocketed coils relieve pressure in the lumbar area, aligning the spine. Younger sleepers will also benefit from the medium firm side of the mattress, which offers their growing bodies the most support.

The Helix Kids Mattress includes soft cushioning while also offering a stable, firm-feeling surface, providing an optimal sleep experience for back sleepers under 130 pounds. Those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds will also receive adequate support and comfort from the bed’s responsive foam and coils. Back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds should consider a firmer bed with a thicker, more supportive comfort layer.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically require the firmest support of all sleep styles. If stomach sleepers sink into a bed too deeply, they may stress their posture. This can potentially cause discomfort that affects quality of sleep, resulting in daytime fatigue and sometimes pain.

On the medium firm side, individually wrapped coils in the support core provide responsive support to areas prone to pressure points. Additionally, the polyfoam layer prevents the sleeper from sinking into the bed’s surface. While coils still provide responsive support on the medium soft side, the gel-infused memory foam offers more contouring, which may be too conforming for heavier stomach sleepers.

The medium firm side of the Helix Kids Mattress will likely suit the needs of most young stomach sleepers. The hybrid bed’s responsive design works best for stomach sleepers weighing under 230 pounds. Those weighing more than 230 pounds may prefer a firmer mattress that doesn’t include soft memory foam in its construction.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

The Helix Kids Mattress design prevents most movement from transferring across the surface of the bed, helping children sleep more peacefully if they share a bed with a sibling or pet.

The pocketed coils in the support core respond individually to the child’s movements, cradling their body as they change position. On the medium soft side, the contouring memory foam gently hugs the sleeper and absorbs motion.

The dense polyfoam on the medium firm side creates a more responsive feel, limiting the bed’s ability to isolate motion.

Children who wake easily may prefer the softer side of the mattress. Alternatively, they may sleep better on an all-foam model that allows more motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

8/10

With its conforming foam and individually pocketed coils, the Helix Kids Mattress offers children above-average pressure relief.

The pocketed coils individually respond to the pressure of the child’s body, allowing each coil to provide targeted relief. Meanwhile, the bed’s plush, gel-infused memory foam cushions the body at key pressure points.

Children who prefer to sleep on their side may prefer the medium soft side, as it contours more readily at the hips and shoulders to promote proper spinal alignment.

However, both sides provide the pressure relief necessary to adequately support most young sleepers.

Temperature Control

7.5/10

The Helix Kids Mattress features a temperature-neutral construction that keeps children cool as they sleep. A soft but breathable Tencel cover is designed to encourage airflow, directing heat away from the child’s body.

Additionally, the memory foam in the medium soft side is infused with gel designed to prevent heat retention.

The pocketed coils in the support core also allow air to move freely throughout the bed to dissipate heat on both sides, making the Helix Kids Mattress a good option for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

8/10

Sagging is most common at the edges of a bed, where support often wanes. However, pocketed coils reinforce the perimeter of the Helix Kids Mattress, improving the bed’s edge support.

Edge support is especially important for children. Since children are more likely than adults to accidentally roll out of bed, sturdy edges can help keep your child safer while sleeping.

Good edge support also means your child can sit on the edge of the bed and use the entirety of the mattress’ surface without experiencing sagging. Additionally, the reinforced edges contribute to the bed’s overall durability, increasing its lifespan.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

While the Helix Kids Mattress conforms to the body to relieve pressure, it also provides a stable surface for easy movement.

The plush memory foam is soft enough to provide comfort for many sleep positions and body types. The polyfoam and coil layer reinforcing the memory foam prevent the sleeper from sinking too deeply into the mattress. This encourages ease of movement even on the medium soft side, which is especially important for active sleepers.

Those who change sleep positions frequently during the night can do so effortlessly on the Helix Kids Mattress.

Off-Gassing

7/10

Most beds that include foam in their design produce moderate to heavy off-gassing due to the foam manufacturing process, releasing an unpleasant odor when first removed from packaging. However, the Helix Kids Mattress emits very little odor.

The foam in this children’s bed is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s made without harmful materials, such as heavy metals. It also produces low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) for better indoor air quality.

Its hybrid construction reduces off-gassing as well, since the coil layer promotes airflow.

Off-gassing generally doesn’t negatively affect most sleepers. However, some people may be sensitive to the smell or prefer a bed that produces low emissions for environmental reasons. For parents wanting to avoid either occurrence, this bed is a great option.

Helix Kids Mattress Review Breakdown

The Helix Kids Mattress is a flippable hybrid mattress made specifically for children. With a medium soft (4) feel on one side and medium firm (6) on the other, Helix designed the bed to meet the needs of young sleepers from 3 to 12 years old.

The bed features a soft-to-the-touch Tencel cover on both sides. Made for easy cleaning, the hypoallergenic cover includes a RUCO-DRY BIO NPE water-repellent finish and a permanent AEGIS Microbe Shield fiber treatment engineered to help prevent odor and bacteria buildup. A fire retardant layer positioned beneath the cover reduces flammability.

In the comfort layer, the medium firm side’s high-grade polyfoam promotes proper spinal alignment, helping younger children maintain correct posture. The medium soft side includes gel-infused memory foam that contours to the body and is designed to prevent pressure points and draw heat away from the sleeper. The memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

A 5-inch pocketed coil support core bolsters both sides. The steel coils individually respond to the body’s weight, providing targeted pressure relief and contouring while reducing motion transfer across the bed’s surface. The coils reinforce the bed’s edges, which adds stability and helps prevent your child from rolling out of bed. Additionally, the coils permit airflow throughout the temperature-neutral bed, keeping hot sleepers cool through the night.

The medium firm side typically works best for children between 3 and 7 years old, while the medium softer side is recommended for children 8 to 12 years old. With an 8-inch profile, the Helix Kids Mattress is compatible with most bunk beds.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Helix Kids Mattress is relatively inexpensive compared to similar hybrid mattresses. Helix uses quality materials in the bed’s construction, like CertiPUR-US certified foam, to improve performance and durability. The manufacturer also includes helpful features that many competitors don’t offer, such as a water-repellant cover and a reinforced perimeter. These features increase the mattress’ value and add to its safety and support.

Additionally, thanks to its reversible design, buyers can choose between two firmness levels. The flippable mattress allows children of various sleep styles, body types, and ages to receive adequate support and comfort for many years, meeting their needs as they grow.

Since children can use this versatile mattress throughout their childhood, the buyer receives a better return on their investment than they would with a mattress that the child would outgrow quickly. Shoppers who don’t want to pay the full price of the bed at the time of purchase can apply for third-party financing through Katapult, which allows customers to pay the mattress off over time instead of in one lump sum.
