Launched in 2019, Lytton Sleep is a relative newcomer in the online mattress space that prides itself on transparent sourcing of materials. While the company’s fabrics are manufactured in Canada, all other components are U.S.-sourced and the mattresses are handcrafted by Michigan-based manufacturer Capitol Bedding.

The company has one mattress model at this time: the Lytton Signature. The hybrid has a 13-inch profile and comes in two feels: Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm, which equate to medium (5) and firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale. The Signature is available exclusively through the company’s website.

We’ll cover all the specifics of the Lytton Signature, including its materials, construction method, warranty, and shipping policies. We’ll also compare the feel and performance of the two firmness options so you can decide which is the more appropriate fit.

The Lytton Signature comes in two firmness options: Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm. The former has a medium (5) feel, while the latter is firm (7).

  • Choose Comfort Plush if…
you’re a side sleeper who weighs less than 230 pounds. A plush Euro-top and Serene Foam comfort layer cushion sensitive pressure points on the hips and shoulders. The medium feel also promotes neutral spine alignment for back and stomach sleepers up to 130 pounds.
  • Choose Comfort Firm if…
you prefer a sturdier surface that moderately contours the body. The firm and responsive layers resist compression, so sleepers stay more on top of the mattress. This makes changing positions easier while also minimizing uncomfortable heat buildup. While the Comfort Firm suits all sleep positions, the firm feel is an especially good fit for stomach and back sleepers over 130 pounds.

Side Sleepers

With its cushy Euro-top and cradling foams, the Signature performs well for most side sleepers. The thick comfort system eases pressure points on the hips and shoulders while evenly distributing body weight.

Side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds should experience comparable pressure relief with either firmness option. We found the Comfort Plush model to be a better choice for side sleepers under 130 pounds, as they require more cushioning to alleviate tension, while those over 230 pounds receive better support from the Comfort Firm version.

Back Sleepers

Our testers found the Comfort Firm to be an excellent choice for back sleepers in any weight range. The sturdy pocketed coil core resists sagging beneath the torso, while the plush Euro-top cushions the shoulders and legs. Back sleepers over 130 pounds should be especially comfortable on the Firm model, as they only need mild contouring.

Performance is more mixed for back sleepers on the Comfort Plush. Since sleepers under 130 pounds don’t sink as much, the medium feel is firm enough to support neutral spine alignment. However, back sleepers on our testing team weighing more than 130 pounds reported less sagging and better support on the Comfort Firm model.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers usually need a firm mattress to keep the midsection from sinking excessively. A mattress that is too soft or conforming can place strain on the lower back.

Similar to back sleepers, the Comfort Firm resists sagging beneath the torso and accommodates stomach sleepers across all weight categories. Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds should also feel supported on the Comfort Plush, though deep sinkage on the softer option is more likely for those over 130 pounds.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Firm: 7 / 10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Plush: 7.5 / 10

The Lytton Signature has average motion isolation for a hybrid mattress. Its thick pocketed coil core generates notable bounce, but the foam comfort layers absorb some of the excess motion. Couples may notice when their partner moves or gets out of bed, especially if each sleeper is over 230 pounds.

The Comfort Plush isolates motion slightly better than the Comfort Firm. This is not surprising, as softer foam typically absorbs motion better than firmer types.

Pressure Relief

8/10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Firm: 7 / 10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Plush: 8 / 10

Our tests showed that both firmness options deliver considerable pressure relief. The plush Euro-top and Serene Foam cushion pressure points on the hips, shoulders, and spine. Adaptive coils help alleviate tension by encouraging proper spine alignment.

With its deeper cradling, the Comfort Plush somewhat outperforms the Comfort Firm in pressure relief. That said, each model’s relative pressure relief depends on body weight and sleep position.

We found that back and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds are more likely to enjoy comfort and support on the Comfort Firm option, while side sleepers and people under 130 pounds benefit from the Comfort Plush model’s softer surface.

Temperature Control

7/10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Firm: 7 / 10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Plush: 7 / 10

The Lytton Signature’s temperature control is on par with most modern hybrids and may be a comfortable alternative for people who usually find memory foam mattresses too hot. Innovative features like open-cell foam and gel infusions are designed to reduce heat buildup, and the pocketed coil core circulates air better than most all-foam mattresses.

Temperature regulation is marginally better on the Comfort Firm model since its comfort system doesn’t conform as closely to sleepers. People over 230 pounds naturally sink more, so they may experience more heat buildup on the Comfort Plush version.

Edge Support

7.5/10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Firm: 7.5 / 10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Plush: 7 / 10

Tempered steel coils and a high-density polyfoam base give the Signature above-average edge support. Couples should enjoy more usable surface area and not feel like they’re rolling off the sides of the bed. Robust edges can also make getting in and out of bed easier.

The Comfort Firm has slightly stronger edge support, as the sturdier surface compresses less under weight and pressure. The edges of the Comfort Plush may sag over time, especially for couples or individuals over 230 pounds. On the whole, though, excess sagging along the sides shouldn’t be an issue for either model.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Firm: 6.5 / 10

Lytton Signature – Comfort Plush: 6.5 / 10

Sleepers shouldn’t feel restricted when adjusting positions on the Signature. Responsive foam layers and a coiled core permit easier movement by not allowing sleepers to sink too much.

The Comfort Firm rates slightly higher in this category since it keeps sleepers more on top of the mattress. That said, the Comfort Plush is still firm enough to prevent sleepers from feeling stuck inside the comfort layers.

Off-Gassing

7/10

Off-gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from foam and other materials. The process emits odors ranging from mild to very prominent. While the tiny molecules aren’t considered harmful, some people are more sensitive to the smell than others.

We found that both versions of the Lytton Signature had a slight off-gassing odor when first unboxed, but nothing too pungent. Once the mattress is unpacked, odors should dissipate within 48 hours.

Lytton Signature Review Breakdown

The Lytton Signature is a hybrid mattress that comes in two firmness options: Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm. The former has a medium (5) feel, while the latter rates as a 7 on our 10-point firmness scale. Both models are 13 inches thick and feature the same essential materials and layout, though differing foam densities account for the firmness variations.

A plush Euro-top is covered in soft and breathable organic cotton with a thin underlayer of polyester. Quilted inside is a 1-inch layer of gel-infused polyfoam. The foam’s open-cell construction and cooling gel infusions are designed to draw out excess heat, helping the surface stay more temperature neutral.

Next is a layer of contouring yet responsive Serene Foam that helps spread body weight evenly across the mattress. Made by Virginia-based Carpenter Co., the proprietary foam is formulated with microscopic air capsules designed to increase breathability. Testing indicates that Serene Foam offers comparable pressure relief to memory foam but is more responsive and durable.

The Comfort Firm model has an indentation load deflection (ILD) rating of 22, showing that it resists compression well under weight and pressure. A 12 ILD on the Comfort Plush reflects a softer comfort system that more closely conforms to sleepers.

Both versions feature an 8-inch pocketed coil core to reinforce the comfort layers. Additional coils beneath the hips and shoulders are designed to promote good sleep posture. Each spring is individually wrapped to move independently, allowing the core to adapt to each sleeper’s movements. The design also helps reduce motion transfer while promoting more airflow than traditional coil systems.

A 1-inch base layer of high-density polyfoam stabilizes the mattress. The final layer also functions as a fire barrier, thanks to flame-resistant fibers.

CertiPUR-US certification shows that the foams are manufactured without harmful chemicals. Queen and larger sizes have eight handles on the sides to make carrying the mattress easier.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Lytton Signature has a slightly below-average price-point for a hybrid mattress. Hybrids are generally more expensive than all-foam or traditional innerspring mattresses since they have more complex constructions.

Given the mattress’ thicker profile, hand-tufted construction, and innovative cooling features, many should find the price tag quite agreeable. Some shoppers are also happy to pay a little more for a product that’s been manufactured domestically.

Both firmness options are available in the six standard mattress sizes. The 13-inch profile may require fitted sheets with deep pockets.
