Full Mattress Review

Nectar and Casper are both well-recognized mattress brands known for being early adopters of the “mattress-in-a-box” approach. Both companies sell mattresses online and ship them compressed and packaged to people’s doorsteps.

The Nectar Classic and Casper One are their respective brand’s flagship all-foam mattress. Since the beds have similar designs and nearly identical firmness levels, shoppers may be confused about how to decide between them. That’s why our testing team personally tested both mattresses, explored each company’s policies, and sifted through customer reviews to help you decide which might be best for you.

Our Testing Team’s Take

In less than a decade, we’ve personally evaluated over 4,000 sleep products, including nearly 2,000 mattresses, in our Seattle Test Lab. During that time, we’ve refined our approach to testing and pinpointed all of the important qualities and characteristics to look for when it comes to mattress function. Performance categories we evaluate mattresses for include motion isolation, pressure relief, temperature control, and edge support.

In addition to these objective tests, we assess subjective factors such as how comfortable or well-supported different types of sleepers feel on a bed. Our testing team members represent a wide range of body types and sleep position preferences, so their opinions provide insight into the best mattress options for different types of people.

Our Verdict

The Nectar Classic and Casper One mattresses sell for similar prices and excel in the areas all-foam beds often do, rating high for both pressure relief and motion isolation. Their memory foam layers cushion the body in a way that back and side sleepers find particularly comfortable, but they are a little too soft for many stomach sleepers. Both memory foam and polyfoam also absorb movement, which also makes these beds an attractive option for couples sharing a bed.

Showers before bed

“When I first brought the Nectar home, I was pleasantly surprised by how firm and supportive it felt. Despite the memory foam feel, I still found it relatively easy to move around and didn’t get the ‘stuck feeling’ I often get with beds of this type. I did wake up feeling a bit hot one of the nights, but this isn’t abnormal during the summer, when I tested it.”

Both beds have roughly the same firmness level, which is medium firm or 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. Side and back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds often find the best combination of comfort and support on these beds. The Casper One stands out for some people who tend to sleep hot but still want a foam bed, because it scored higher for temperature control.

Too many dogs in the bed

“One of the things that stood out the most to me was how well the Casper One absorbed motion. I liked that I wasn’t bothered by movement on the other side of the bed. I also felt that the mattress had a good mix of pressure relief and pushback.”

Construction and Materials

While the Nectar Classic and Casper One are constructed similarly, there are slight differences.

Nectar Classic Breakdown

The Nectar Classic is a medium firm (6) mattress with a profile measuring 12 inches thick. It contains three internal layers. The cover is made with a polyester blend fabric infused with cooling fibers and treated with an antimicrobial substance. These additions are intended to keep the top of the mattress cool and fresh.

A 1-inch layer of memory foam beneath the cover provides much of the Nectar Classic’s plushness. This cushioning layer allows sleepers to feel a bit of “hug” from the mattress. Below it sits a 3-inch polyfoam layer that provides extra cushioning while keeping sleepers supported with their spines aligned.

The bed’s support core consists of an 8-inch layer of high-density polyfoam. This layer forms the foundation of the bed and provides stability. Along with the other two layers, the support core helps absorb movement and reduce motion transfer. The bottom portion of the cover is made of a thicker fabric than the top to protect the support core and prevent the mattress from shifting on its foundation.

Casper One Breakdown

Like the Nectar Classic, the Casper One is an all-foam mattress model that has a medium firm (6) feel. It measures 11 inches thick, which is one inch shorter than the Nectar Classic. The Casper One also contains three internal layers. Its cover is a knit blend of polyester, polyethylene, and Lycra that feels breathable and soft to the touch.

The uppermost foam layer of the Casper One is made of open-cell polyfoam. Open-cell polyfoam is structured with small, open pores that help promote airflow and disperse heat. The inclusion of open-cell polyfoam is likely why the Casper One rates higher in temperature regulation. Below it sits a layer of memory foam for additional cushioning.

Like the Nectar Classic, the Casper One’s support core is made of high-density polyfoam. This layer stabilizes the mattress and provides firmness and pushback to prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the bed.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both the Nectar Classic and Casper One are available in the same size options: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king. Split king mattresses consist of two separate twin XL mattresses that fit together in a king size frame. They work well for bed partners who use an adjustable bed.

The Nectar Classic and Casper One also have similar profiles. The Nectar model is 12 inches thick, while the Casper One is 11 inches. Although the Nectar Classic weighs a little more than the Casper One, both are over 75 pounds and require at least two people to lift and carry them.

Performance Ratings

With comparable materials, construction, and profiles, the Nectar Classic and Casper One have more similarities than differences in terms of performance. Both rate highly on their ability to cushion the body and relieve pressure points, especially among side and back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. These mattresses also excel at isolating motion, so movement on one side of the bed is unlikely to travel to the other.

The bed’s ratings differ a bit when it comes to stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds preferred the Casper One over the Nectar Classic. Stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 gave above-average ratings to the Nectar Classic, but didn’t feel as comfortable on the Casper One. Neither bed felt adequate to stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds.

The drawbacks of each of these mattresses are representative of the complaints often made about all-foam beds in general. Edge support is average for both mattresses, and some people might find that their perimeters fold beneath their body weight more than they would on a hybrid or innerspring. Since both beds have a bit of “hug,” sleepers also might find that changing positions or getting out of bed is more difficult than it would be on a bouncier mattress.

Temperature control is often a problem on all-foam beds because foam tends to absorb body heat. But thanks to its open-cell polyfoam comfort layer, the Casper One mattress rates higher than the Nectar Classic when it comes to keeping sleepers cool. That said, sleepers who generally sleep hot may feel too warm on either bed.

Mattress Pricing

All-foam beds are often less expensive than other mattress types like latex, hybrid, and airbed models. That’s because foam is a synthetic material that is less expensive to manufacture than the materials in other kinds of beds. The pricing of all-foam mattresses can vary quite a bit, with some models only costing a few hundred dollars and others being sold for over $2,000.

The Nectar Classic and Casper One are both on the more affordable end of the spectrum. However, the Casper One often costs a bit more than the Nectar Classic, depending on what sales are going on.

Both beds come with sleep trials. Nectar gives customers a longer time to try out their beds, with a 365-night trial compared to Casper’s 100-night trial. Similarly, both companies provide limited warranties, but Casper’s is for 10 years and Nectar’s is a lifetime warranty. Their shipping and white glove delivery policies are very similar.

What Customers Are Saying

Customers praise both beds for being comfortable and pressure-relieving. Many mention sleeping well on the beds and appreciating the value they provide given their reasonable prices.

When there are complaints about the Nectar Classic or Casper One, they usually come from back or stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds who find the beds too soft. Most say these beds cannot properly support them, and they require something firmer. Some people also mention that they sleep hot on these beds, but that complaint is more common with the Nectar Classic.
