Pros
Solid support for side and back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds
Responsive surface prevents feeling stuck in the mattress
Above-average temperature control for a foam hybrid
Cons
Individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds might prefer a firmer feel for better support
The Casper Dream is a robust hybrid mattress made by one of the most popular direct-to-consumer mattress brands.
Overall, the balanced construction of the Casper Dream promises gentle cushioning on the surface and moderate bounce when you move on it. The design includes a comfort system with two types of foam, including memory foam formulated with distinct support zones. Its base is made with pocketed coils encased in dense polyfoam.
The Dream is one of Casper’s mid-range models in terms of pricing. In addition to the standard Dream Mattress, Casper offers the Dream Max. This luxury upgrade adds a second memory foam layer that’s been cut with airflow channels to promote air circulation and help the mattress stay cool.
We’ll discuss the Casper Dream and Dream Max in-depth, detailing their construction, pricing, and performance during our in-house testing.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Casper Dream Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Combo sleeper
150 lbs.
Sleeps with a noise machine
This mattress felt great when lying on my side, but it wasn’t as supportive for back or stomach sleeping. It was definitely comfortable, but as someone who likes to change up how I sleep, I’m not sure I’d want to sleep on it long-term.
Brad Nehring
Senior Product Analyst
Side sleeper
215 lbs.
Sleeps with a weighted blanket
I second what Jeremy said about great cushioning for the hips and shoulders. I also liked that the Dream and Dream Max slept cooler than most mattresses with memory foam.

Side sleeper
160 lbs.
Nightly melatonin user
The layered foam of the Dream and Dream Max gave my hips and shoulders plenty of cushioning, so I woke up feeling great. The memory foam on the Dream could get a little warm at times, but it wasn’t that bad.

Side Sleepers
The Dream and Dream Max each have a medium (5) feel that provides a good balance of pressure relief and support for side sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds.
Because the hips and shoulders tend to be the widest parts of the body, side sleepers frequently experience pressure points around these joints. The soft, multilayer comfort systems of the Dream and Dream Max adapt to cushion pressure points and keep them aligned with the spine.
For side sleepers over 230 pounds, our testing found that the Dream and Dream Max were too plush. Too much softness reduces support and causes the hips and shoulders to sink in too far for these sleepers.
Back Sleepers
During our testing, the Dream mattresses provided above-average support for back sleepers under 130 pounds. However, they were less supportive for individuals who weigh more.
To maintain proper spinal alignment, back sleepers usually require a relatively even surface that doesn’t sag. The zoned memory foam can help reduce sagging around the midsection of the mattress. However, the softer feel caused many of our testers to experience excess sinkage that made it challenging to maintain a neutral spine.
Stomach Sleepers
Our testing found that the Dream and Dream Max are not the best options for stomach sleepers. While they can deliver adequate support to stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, their softness and contouring foams limit their ability to create a flat and even surface that benefits stomach sleepers.
On softer mattresses, stomach sleepers often find that the area around their stomach sags down too far and falls out of alignment with the rest of their body. In our testing, this was the source of the lower ratings for the Dream and Dream Max from stomach sleepers over 130 pounds.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7.5
/ 10
Dream: 7.5 / 10
Dream Max: 7 / 10
“While the memory foam helps cut down on motion transfer, you still feel some light bounce spread across this mattress when your bed partner moves around.” – Jeremy
We found that the Dream and Dream Max have pretty good but not perfect motion isolation. While memory foam helps absorb vibrations, the coils and polyfoam layers give the mattress a springier feel that can help motion spread.
Most couples will find the motion isolation on these mattresses to be more than enough. But people who are easily awakened or who have a bed partner who moves around constantly may prefer a mattress with more robust motion isolation.
Pressure Relief
8
/ 10
Dream: 8 / 10
Dream Max: 8.5 / 10
“The careful layering of the Dream and Dream Max really pays off when it comes to pressure relief. The mattresses comfortably cup common pressure points, especially when you’re side sleeping.” – Mary
The Dream Hybrid and Dream Max both use a thick comfort system that balances conforming and support. This gives the mattress stronger pressure relief than many competing hybrid models. Our testing gave the highest pressure relief scores to the Dream Max.
The substantial comfort system spreads out the sleeper’s weight so that pressure is less likely to build up around wider, heavier body parts. The zoned materials also deliver extra support to the areas that need it most.
However, this model of pressure relief isn’t ideal for everyone. Stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds may find that there’s too much contouring and softness to fully support their body.
Temperature Control
7
/ 10
Dream: 7 / 10
Dream Max: 8 / 10
“When I hear the words memory foam, I often worry about overheating, but that wasn’t the case here. In particular, the Dream Max resisted heat buildup.” – Brad
In our testing, the Dream Max offered above-average temperature regulation, and the Dream also performed relatively well in this category.
The open-cell foams at the top of the mattress are breathable, and air can also circulate through the pocketed coils. In the Dream Max, air channels in the memory foam are engineered to enhance ventilation and cooling.
All things considered, these mattresses hold onto less heat than many models with memory foam. For hot sleepers choosing between them, the Dream Max is more likely to stay cool through the night.
Edge Support
7
/ 10
Dream: 7 / 10
Dream Max: 6.5 / 10
“I never felt really unstable when sitting or lying down on the edge of the Dream or Dream Hybrid, but I could clearly notice sinkage around the perimeter.” – Jeremy
The Dream Mattress has moderate edge support. While the coils are encased in foam intended to limit compression, the medium (5) firmness level leads to sinkage along the edges, especially when you get in and out of bed.
The Dream Max’s additional foam layer can lead to even more compression along the perimeter. That said, both mattresses performed at roughly the same level during our edge support tests.
Ease of Movement
7.5
/ 10
“I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of bounce on the Dream and Dream Hybrid. Although there was a contouring effect from the foam, I didn’t run into a lot of resistance when moving on the mattress.” – Mary
During our testing, there were few complaints about ease of movement on the Dream and Dream Hybrid. Testers appreciated the moderate bounciness, which made it easier to move around despite the conforming foam layers.
The sleepers who found it hardest to move on the mattress were people over 230 pounds. Because they sank more deeply into the foam, they encountered more pushback when trying to adjust their body’s position.
Off-Gassing
6.5
/ 10
Dream: 6.5 / 10
Dream Max: 6 / 10
“As with most mattresses that have multiple foam layers, there was some off-gassing from the Dream and Dream Max. After two or three days, though, I couldn’t notice the smell anymore.” – Brad
Odor is common with new mattresses, especially if there are several inches of foam. These odors are due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released into the air. These chemicals and odors are generally considered harmless and do not usually last once the mattress airs out.
Our team found that you can expect the smell from the Dream or Dream Max to dissipate within a few days. Opening a window or turning on a fan can help minimize the odor.
The Casper Dream is 12 inches thick, and the Dream Max measures 14 inches thick. Both mattresses rate as a 5 on the 10-point firmness scale, which translates to a medium feel. Some testers said that the Dream Max felt slightly softer than the Dream.
Both models have a knit cover that feels soft and stretchy. The top interior layer is made with an open-cell polyfoam that adapts to the body’s weight. Beneath it is a layer of memory foam that is zoned to have extra support under key pain points. In the support core, pocketed coils encased in dense foam reinforce the sleep surface while adding bounce and breathability.
The Dream Max builds on this design with the same components plus an extra foam layer in the comfort system. That layer is made of 2 inches of memory foam with airflow channels to increase ventilation.
The Dream comes in all the standard mattress sizes as well as a split king. The Dream Max is sold in all the same sizes except twin size. Below are breakdowns of height, weight, and size dimensions for the Dream and Dream Max mattresses.
