ghostbed natural mattress review

Ideal for:

  • Sleepers of all position preferences and body types
  • Individuals who tend to overheat
  • Those who prefer a responsive sleep surface
  • Anyone who uses the edge of the bed extensively

Considerations:

  • Couples who are sensitive to each other’s movement may feel vibrations traveling across the surface due to the mattress’ springiness.
  • Latex does not provide the deep contouring of memory foam, lending to the sensation of sleeping “on” rather than “in” the bed.
  • While the GhostBed Natural is similar in price to many latex hybrids, this type of mattress tends to be more expensive than innerspring and all-foam models.

After years of research, Nature’s Sleep launched GhostBed with the goal of providing quality mattresses directly to consumers at affordable prices. Today, GhostBed offers a robust lineup of mattresses, pillows, bed frames, and other sleep products.

In 2021, the company introduced the GhostBed Natural Mattress. Unlike other models in the product line, this hybrid uses natural latex and wool to appeal to more eco-conscious shoppers. The mattress has a medium firm (6) feel and an 8-inch pocketed coil core for durable, responsive support that accommodates most sleep positions and body types.

To help you determine if the GhostBed Natural is right for you, we’ll examine its construction, materials, and performance. We’ll also outline useful information on shipping, warranties, and return policies to give you a better idea of how the GhostBed Natural stacks up.

GhostBed Natural Mattress Review Breakdown

The GhostBed Natural Mattress is a hybrid model constructed of natural latex, wool, and pocketed coils. These high-quality materials create a responsive surface that strikes a balance between gentle pressure relief and ample support. With a medium firm (6) feel, this mattress is well suited to a wide range of sleep positions and body types.

The topmost layer of the GhostBed Natural uses 1.8 ounces of natural wool, which is a breathable material that dissipates body heat and wicks away moisture. The wool is also naturally fire-resistant to eliminate the need for chemical flame retardants.

Beneath the wool is a 2-inch layer of natural Talalay latex, which has a soft feel that cradles the body without conforming too deeply. Talalay latex is also breathable and buoyant, resisting heat retention while responding quickly to changes in pressure.

An 8-inch support core gives the GhostBed Natural its supportive feel. The core consists of individually wrapped coils that reduce motion transfer and noise while creating a responsive surface. Reinforced coils along the perimeter limit edge sinkage, which can help the sleep area feel larger by allowing sleepers to rest up to the edge of the bed.

The coil support core rests on a 1-inch layer of sturdy natural Dunlop latex. This highly durable material helps increase the bed’s longevity. A GOTS- and USDA-certified organic cotton cover wraps around the mattress, providing softness and breathability.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Though the GhostBed Natural Mattress is on the higher end of the average price range for a hybrid model, its price-point is on par with others that incorporate natural latex.

The GhostBed Natural Mattress is available in all six standard sizes, as well as a split king. At 12 inches thick, this is a medium-profile model. While the GhostBed Natural is lighter than many latex hybrids, shoppers should consider the weight if they plan to set up the mattress on their own.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The coil system and latex layers of the GhostBed Natural are responsive and bouncy, which may allow some motion to travel across the surface of the bed. Couples who are sensitive to each other’s movements may find that the GhostBed Natural Mattress does not isolate motion well enough to minimize disturbances throughout the night.

Pressure Relief

The wool and latex comfort layers in the GhostBed Natural cushion the body and distribute weight away from sharp pressure points. Though these materials do not conform deeply, they cradle sensitive areas and provide ample pressure relief for a variety of body types and sleep styles.

Temperature Control

Latex and wool are naturally temperature-regulating materials that distribute heat away from the body, allowing the GhostBed Natural Mattress to sleep cool. Air also moves freely between the coils in the support core, which allows heat to dissipate. The GhostBed Natural’s strong temperature regulation reduces the potential for overheating that could interrupt quality rest.

Edge Support

The coil support core in the GhostBed Natural Mattress includes two rows of reinforced coils along the edge of the bed. These coils provide above-average structure along the perimeter of the mattress. These stronger edges can help the surface of the mattress feel larger by allowing sleepers to lie near the perimeter without feeling like they will slip off. The sturdy support may also make it easier to get into and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

The GhostBed Natural Mattress should be easy for most sleepers to move on because of its coil support core and latex layers. These materials are responsive, bouncy, and quick to regain their shape when the sleeper changes positions. This may be valuable for sleepers who shift throughout the night and those with mobility issues.

Sex

Thanks to its springy coil system and responsive latex layers, the GhostBed Natural Mattress has enough bounce to complement the movements of sex. Since the coils are pocketed, the bed should also be quiet enough for discretion. Meanwhile, the wool and latex comfort layers conform gently to provide traction.

Off-Gassing

Many new mattresses give off a distinct chemical scent once they are unboxed. The smell is typically a result of off-gassing, where newly manufactured synthetic materials release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Though VOCs are not thought to be dangerous, they can bother sleepers who are sensitive to odors.

Because the GhostBed Natural Mattress is constructed using natural latex and a coil core, it does not emit a strong off-gassing odor. There may be a slight natural latex or wool smell, but this should air out within a few days.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers: The GhostBed Natural Mattress balances cradling and support for many side sleepers. Its medium firm (6) feel is especially appropriate for those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Side sleepers tend to place considerable pressure on wider parts of the body, such as the hips and shoulders. As such, side sleepers tend to benefit from surfaces that contour to these areas while offering enough support to keep the spine in a neutral position.

The GhostBed Natural Mattress’ wool and Talalay latex comfort layers gently cradle sharp areas to reduce pressure buildup, while the coil core limits sinkage to help keep the spine in alignment.

Back Sleepers: The GhostBed Natural Mattress performs exceptionally well for back sleepers, particularly those who weigh under 230 pounds.

Back sleepers typically enjoy supportive surfaces that contour subtly while resisting sinking. Mattresses that are too soft may allow the hips to sag, pulling the spine out of alignment. Meanwhile, mattresses that are too firm may not allow the hips to sink in enough to promote good posture.

The GhostBed Natural’s wool and Talalay latex comfort system cradles the body enough to remain comfortable without conforming too deeply. Additionally, the coil core and Dunlop latex base provide durable support that promotes healthy sleep posture.

Stomach Sleepers: Regardless of their body types, the GhostBed Natural Mattress provides many stomach sleepers with a comfortable balance of support and cushioning.

Stomach sleepers typically place significant pressure on their midsections and necks. Mattresses that conform too deeply may disrupt proper spinal alignment and contribute to lumbar strain, which can cause discomfort. Those who favor stomach sleeping typically benefit from firmer sleep surfaces that cushion the body gently without sinking.

The GhostBed Natural’s wool and Talalay latex are soft enough to relieve pressure but supportive enough to resist sinking. The coil core and Dunlop latex base also provide even support that’s conducive to good posture. Because of its medium firm (6) feel, the GhostBed Natural may be particularly appropriate for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.
