OVERVIEW

The GhostBed 3D Matrix is the company’s most premium mattress. Two versions are available: a hybrid model and an airbed. The first has a medium (5) feel and uses a hybrid design with several layers of foam and a pocketed coil core. In place of the coil core, the 3D Matrix SmartBed uses adjustable air chambers for customizable firmness. Both versions incorporate patented 3D Matrix material, which is a gel polymer designed to stay cool while relieving pressure.

GhostBed launched in 2015 with the flagship GhostBed Mattress, an affordable, all-foam model with a medium firm (6) feel. The GhostBed Luxe is a medium (5) all-foam model that focuses on temperature control, while the GhostBed Flex is the company’s original medium firm (6) hybrid model. GhostBed also offers the Natural, which is a medium firm (6) latex hybrid mattress.

We’ll examine both versions of the GhostBed 3D Matrix. After looking at their primary features, construction, and materials, we’ll delve into their performance across body types, sleep positions, and performance categories. Finally, we’ll provide an overview of GhostBed’s policies.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The 3D Matrix and the 3D Matrix SmartBed isolate motion well. Their foam comfort systems absorb a significant amount of movement, making these models good options for sleepers who are easily awoken by a partner’s restless sleep.

The hybrid version’s support layer also uses pocketed coils that move independently to reduce the spread of vibrations. Since the SmartBed uses separate air chambers on each side of the bed, its core also limits motion transfer.

Pressure Relief

Each version of the GhostBed 3D Matrix contains 2 inches of gel memory foam as well as a polyfoam transition layer that provides notable pressure relief. These layers cradle the body and redistribute weight, reducing pressure buildup around the hips and shoulders.

The hybrid option’s pocketed coil core adds to this effect by providing responsive support to help maintain spinal alignment.

Instead of coils, the SmartBed uses air chambers in five adjustable ergonomic zones. This allows you to control the firmness under different parts of your body for extra pressure relief where you need it most.

Temperature Control

With patented technology designed for cooling, the 3D Matrix earns high marks in temperature control.

A 3D Matrix gel polymer layer is engineered to absorb body heat. Its honeycomb structure is intended to draw that warmth away from the sleeper’s body. The gel-infused memory foam comfort layer is also designed for heat regulation, and the mattress cover is crafted to feel cool to the touch.

The hybrid version contains a breath coil layer that lets heat dissipate naturally. The SmartBed’s adjustable air chambers also help regulate temperature.

Edge Support

Both the GhostBed 3D Matrix and the GhostBed 3D Matrix SmartBed offer standard edge support compared to other hybrid and airbed models.

The foam comfort layers contour to the body, which can create a sinking feeling when you sit or sleep on the edge of the bed. However, a double row of reinforced, pocketed coils along the perimeter of the hybrid version helps limit this sinkage.

The SmartBed’s edge support varies depending on the firmness setting. Generally, firmer settings provide a sturdier edge, expanding the usable sleep surface.

Ease of Movement

Moving on the GhostBed 3D Matrix is about as easy as moving on similarly constructed beds.

While the hybrid version’s individually pocketed coils add bounce, the thick comfort system’s deep contouring may limit movement.

For the SmartBed, it depends on the firmness setting. Firmer settings can make changing positions somewhat easier, but the close conforming of the comfort system may still restrict movement.

Sex

The 3D Matrix and the 3D Matrix SmartBed each provide a balance of conforming and responsiveness that can be beneficial for sex.

A thick comfort system provides cushioning and traction, but some couples may sink too far into the surface, limiting their mobility.

Thanks to its coil core, the hybrid version has a bouncy feel that many couples enjoy. The SmartBed’s adjustable air chambers aren’t quite as responsive, but using a firmer setting can help limit sinkage.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing occurs when mattress materials emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can cause noticeable odors. While generally not harmful, this odor can be unpleasant.

Both versions of the 3D Matrix may let off some off-gassing odors. These smells are likely to be strongest within the first few days, but then they should dissipate.

Side Sleepers:
Side sleepers usually benefit from gentle contouring around their hips and shoulders. The thick all-foam comfort systems of the 3D Matrix and the 3D Matrix SmartBed make them ideal for many side sleepers.

The hybrid version is best suited to side sleepers under 130 pounds. They should sink into the comfort system just enough to ease pressure while still maintaining good spinal alignment. Those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds will probably also feel cradled without excessive sinkage. However, side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may sag around their hips and shoulders, putting pressure on their lower backs.

Because of its customizable firmness and ergonomic zoning, the SmartBed can accommodate side sleepers in all weight groups. The real-time pressure data, zoned settings, and automatic adjustment feature may be especially beneficial for side sleepers seeking the optimal balance of contouring and support.

Back Sleepers:
Both versions of the 3D Matrix provide an even surface that promotes good spinal alignment for many back sleepers.

The hybrid option’s medium feel and pocketed coil core offer optimal support for sleepers under 130 pounds. Its thick foam comfort system also cradles the hips to relieve pressure and support the natural curvature of the spine. However, our testers who weigh over 130 pounds experienced more sagging around their hips, which put pressure on their lower backs.

With five air chambers that can be controlled separately for a tailored sleep experience, the SmartBed earned its highest ratings from our testers under 230 pounds. Back sleepers can select a preprogrammed option designed specifically for the position or ask the bed to respond to their movements in real time. They can also experiment with different firmness settings to create the right combination of support across their legs, hips, lumbar region, shoulders, and head.

Stomach Sleepers:
Firmer mattresses typically provide the support that stomach sleepers need to maintain good spinal alignment. Both versions of the 3D Matrix can accommodate stomach sleepers of some weights.

Those under 130 pounds generally get good support from the hybrid version’s medium feel. Our testers who weigh less than 130 pounds experienced little to no sagging around their hips. However, our heavier testers noticed that their midsections sank too deeply into the mattress, leading to lower back discomfort.

The SmartBed addresses this potential problem, making it a good option for stomach sleepers from all weight groups. Sleepers can increase the firmness of the SmartBed by using the app’s preset options, allowing the sensors to provide real-time feedback to the air chambers. There is also the option to manually adjust the firmness according to your own specifications.

GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Review Breakdown

The GhostBed 3D Matrix is available as a hybrid model with a medium (5) feel and as a SmartBed with adjustable firmness.

The hybrid version begins with a Ghost Ice cover designed to feel cool to the touch. Below the cover is the 3D Matrix layer, which uses a soy-based gel polymer in a honeycomb pattern. The gel is engineered to absorb a sleeper’s body heat, while the distinctive hexagonal shapes are intended to help wick it away. Under the polymer layer is 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam crafted for pressure relief and temperature control. Next, two layers of patented polyfoam deepen the contouring while enhancing the responsiveness.

A 6-inch layer of individually wrapped coils forms the mattress’ support core, allowing airflow, reducing motion transfer, and adding bounce. Two rows of reinforced coils along the edge of the mattress make it easier to use the full surface and get into and out of bed. A 1-inch layer of high-density foam under the coils enhances the stability and durability.

The GhostBed 3D Matrix SmartBed has a slightly different design than the hybrid version. Most notably, it omits one layer of patented polyfoam, incorporates sensors, and replaces the coil system with adjustable air chambers.

Separate air chambers on each side of the bed allow partners to select different firmness levels. Each side is also divided into five ergonomic zones for more targeted support and contouring. Sleepers can adjust the firmness settings via an app or have the bed automatically adjust based on real-time pressure data from the sensors.

Defective mattresses include those that have cracking foam or body indentations that are greater than 1 inch. To be covered, the damage must not be due to abuse, misuse, or improper mattress support.

The outer cover of the mattress is also eligible for 1 year of warranty coverage against defects in the material or workmanship.
