The Birch Natural Mattress is a 10-inch latex hybrid. The breathable cover is made from organic undyed cotton. Beneath the cover is a layer of natural New Zealand wool that provides cushioning, wicks moisture away from the body, and acts as a natural fire barrier for the mattress.

Next up is a layer of Dunlop latex, which is certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Together, the wool and latex provide a medium firm (6) feel with a highly responsive surface and moderate contouring.

In the support core, 8-inch steel coils reinforce the sleep surface and help you maintain proper spinal alignment. The coils also promote airflow throughout the mattress interior to reduce heat retention on the surface. Although the coils are individually wrapped and designed to move independently of one another, sensitive sleepers may still notice some motion transfer when their partner changes position. Rows of thicker coils along the edges enhance stability when getting in and out of bed. A fiber pad made from a flame-retardant wool and rayon blend rests beneath the coils.

During our testing, the Birch Natural excelled at providing support for sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds in all positions, as well as back and stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Side sleepers under 130 pounds noticed mild pressure buildup in the hips and shoulders.

While the Birch Natural boasts above-average temperature regulation, you can elect to add the EcoCool Layer upgrade. This add-on features graphite strips engineered to wick heat away from your body. Birch also offers two upgraded models, the Birch Luxe Natural and the Birch Elite Natural, which build on the basic design of the Birch Natural with features like extra wool or minicoil layers.

If you need help setting up your mattress, you can add White Glove delivery and old mattress removal to your order for an additional fee.

How We Determine Our Mattress Rankings

We put each mattress through a series of standardized tests to see how it performs on key factors. The process includes industry-standard lab evaluations as well as subjective position and weight tests by our team members.

Our Performance Criteria

  • Motion isolation: Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress absorbs your movements and prevents motion from disturbing your partner. We measure motion isolation by creating movement on one side of the bed and using a vibrometer to assess whether vibrations reach the other side.
  • Temperature control: Keeping a cool sleep surface is key for getting a comfortable night’s sleep. We test for heat retention by warming up part of the mattress, then removing the heat source and using a thermometer to test how much the temperature has dropped after 5 minutes.
  • Pressure relief: Mattresses with insufficient cushioning can trigger pressure buildup in weight-bearing areas like the hips and shoulders. We use a pressure pad to map out how well the mattress cushions these areas as our testers lie on their back, stomach, and side.
  • Durability: Durability is impossible to fully judge using short-term tests, but we can estimate the lifespan of a mattress by analyzing its materials and construction. For brands that have been on the market for longer, we also consider our own experiences with these mattresses over the past decade.
  • Ease of movement: Materials that contour closely can restrict movement when you try to change positions. We place kettlebells of different weights on the mattress, then time how long it takes for the surface to spring back to its original shape after they are removed.
  • Edge support: Edge support is important when getting in and out of bed. It also provides a better sense of security when sleeping along the perimeter of your mattress. We analyze edge support by having our testers simulate these movements, as well as by using weights to measure compression along the perimeter.
  • Off-gassing: New mattresses often emit a mild odor when they are first unpacked. This off-gassing is more common with foam mattresses. While it’s not considered harmful, some people find off-gassing smells bothersome. We keep track of how many days the scent takes to dissipate.

Because the feel of a mattress can change depending on your body weight and sleep position, we also include subjective feedback from people of different body types and preferred sleep positions on our testing team.

Our Selection Process

To get our list of finalists for the best organic mattress, we filtered our database to organic mattresses that achieved an overall score of 8.0 or higher during our testing. We further narrowed down the field by selecting only those mattresses with credible organic certifications, which provide quality assurance from reputable third-party organizations like GOLS, GOTS, and GREENGUARD.

Most of the organic models on our list are made with some combination of cotton, wool, and latex. Hybrid models also contain steel coils. Latex is a great option for organic mattresses, since it can be sustainably sourced from rubber trees and formulated into responsive comfort or support layers. We gave special weight to mattresses made with fully organic Dunlop or Talalay latex.

From there, we looked at firmness and how each mattress performed for side, back, and stomach sleepers in different weight groups. We also conducted another round of tests to compare performance on factors like temperature regulation and motion isolation. Finally, we considered brand reputation, material quality, pricing, company policies, and user feedback.

Among the finalists, the Birch Natural Mattress offered the most well-rounded performance for the largest variety of sleepers, so it topped our list.

Why the Birch Natural Won

The Birch Natural boasts a sturdy build with durable components that we expect to last for years to come. This mattress stands out from the crowd for its eco-friendly design, which blends different organic materials in order to offer a medium firm, supportive surface that appeals to a wide range of sleeper types.

This mattress offers strong edge support, excellent ease of movement, and standout temperature regulation. Wool and Dunlop latex in the comfort system provide above-average cushioning compared with other organic mattresses. Our testers reported decent support across most body types and sleeping positions, with a special shout-out from back and stomach sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.

The only categories where the Birch Natural falters slightly are motion isolation and pressure relief, which are typical weak points for a latex-on-coil hybrid.

Unlike some other mattresses that claim to be natural or organic, the Birch Natural doesn’t include any polyfoam or memory foam whatsoever, and it uses water-based adhesives. The organic wool is fully traceable and the latex is GOLS-certified. Though some other organic mattresses performed better in specific areas, you can’t beat the accessible price-point of the Birch Natural. It’s priced much lower than the average organic mattress, and Birch offers customer-forward shipping and return policies.

Thanks to its high-quality organic materials and strong performance across categories, we ultimately chose the Birch Natural as the best organic mattress this year.
