People are drawn to hybrid mattresses for many reasons. Their coils create a bit of bounce, while their comfort layers generally relieve pressure and conform to the body. Hybrids often sleep cooler and last longer than all-foam models. However, due to the costs associated with materials and construction, hybrid mattresses tend to carry higher price tags.

We’ve combed through the 2,000+ mattresses that have come through our Test Lab over the last 10 years to identify the best affordable hybrid mattress models. Read on to see which budget-friendly hybrids performed scored highly in our hands-on testing and customer reviews.

Our #1 Pick: Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight is our top pick for an affordable hybrid mattress because its balanced medium firm design is suitable for side and back sleepers across different weight groups. This bed relieves pressure exceptionally well, sleeps cool, feels strong along the edges, and isolates motion for couples.

How We Test

How We Determine Our Best Overall Score

With each mattress we test, our team follows the same comprehensive research and evaluation methodology to ensure objective, data-based findings. The mattress testing process consists of four stages, beginning with our detailed analysis of the bed’s construction, materials, and firmness. This cursory exam allows us to calculate an expected lifespan to determine our durability score. We also review the brand’s shipping and return policies, as well as its overall reputation for customer service and satisfaction.

The second stage involves hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. We use a wide range of tools and technology to determine how well the mattress relieves pressure, isolates motion, regulates temperature, and resists deep compression when weight is applied. Once we’ve finished the lab-based stage, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them in their own bedrooms for 2 to 3 weeks. These in-home experiences capture how the mattress performs night to night in an authentic sleep environment. Lastly, we collect and read verified customer reviews of each product to make sure our findings are in line with the general public.

Throughout this four-step testing process, we record data and notes that contribute to each bed’s overall and individual performance ratings. The graph below shows how every performance metric contributes to product scores.

How We Determine Our Best Overall Score

How We Determine the Best Affordable Hybrid Mattress

Our mattress ratings come from our own research and testing. We bring mattresses into our Seattle-based Test Lab, then use advanced tools and technology to assess how they perform across different performance categories like motion isolation, pressure relief, and temperature control.

We also send mattresses home with our field testing team members, who sleep on each bed for a couple weeks and provide insights about how they perform in real-world sleep environments. Finally, we evaluate ratings and reviews from verified customers who have purchased the mattresses and weighed in on their pros and cons.

Once we’ve gathered data in these different ways, we assign scores across different categories. We calculate an overall score by weighting the ratings for each category, as displayed in the pie chart below. In this guide, you can view the ratings for each mattress in the “Scoring & Reviews” sections.

Due to its medium firm (6) firmness level, the Helix Midnight is a mattress that works well for many types of sleepers. Its balanced support and reinforced edges also make it a good option for people with pain and those who frequently use their bed’s edges.

How It Performed

The Helix Midnight was designed specifically for side sleepers, and it performed best for this group during our tests. Regardless of body weight, side sleepers gave the bed exceptionally strong ratings. Many back and stomach sleepers also found comfort on this mattress in our testing, but those with lower body weights enjoyed it the most. Back and stomach sleepers that weigh over 230 pounds may want to keep shopping because the Helix Midnight might not provide the support they need.

Other areas in which the Helix Midnight excelled in our testing include temperature control, pressure relief, edge support, and durability. Hot sleepers may also enjoy this model. The Helix Midnight contours more closely than many other hybrids. Some sleepers prefer this extra cradling, while others may find the mattress difficult to move on.

Construction Breakdown

The Helix Midnight Mattress is encased in a knit polyester cover. An optional pillow-top layer with high-tech cooling fibers is available for an additional fee.

Beneath the cover sits the comfort system, which consists of a memory foam layer and two polyfoam layers. The memory foam molds closely to your body and relieves pressure, and the polyfoam layers provide additional cushioning to keep you comfy.

Pocketed coils and dense base polyfoam make up the support core. The coils are reinforced on both sides to ensure strong edge support.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Helix provides free ground shipping to customers in the contiguous U.S. The company also ships to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada for a fee. The Helix Midnight comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

Many of our testers found the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid to be comfortable, largely because of its medium firm (6) construction and ability to stay cool. The sticker price is also approachable, given its sophisticated design with five individual comfort layers.

How It Performed

Across the board, sleepers praised the CopperFlex Pro Hybrid for its ability to remain cool throughout the night. All side sleepers on our testing team found the CopperFlex Pro Hybrid comfortable, and those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds liked it the most. Memory foam comfort layers alleviate pressure, while a zoned polyfoam layer helps promote spinal alignment.

Back sleepers up to 230 pounds also gave the CopperFlex Pro Hybrid solid ratings, but those weighing over 230 didn’t feel well supported. Similarly, stomach sleepers under 130 pounds enjoyed the mattress, but those weighing more sank in too deeply.

Construction Breakdown

The CopperFlex Pro Hybrid Mattress begins with a polyester cover that has cooling GlacioTex fibers and a layer of polyfoam quilted into it. Beneath the cover sits two more comfort layers made of gel-infused memory foam and copper-infused memory foam.

Below the comfort system, a polyfoam transitional layer keeps sleepers from sinking down to the support core. Another polyfoam layer provides zoned support. The support core consists of an 8-inch pocketed coil layer held in place by a layer of base foam. The pocketed coil layer has reinforced edges for stronger edge support.

If you’re a side sleeper, the Leesa Original Hybrid is a strong affordable mattress choice. This model relieves pressure well and promotes spinal alignment in side sleepers. It also works well for back and stomach sleepers weighing under 130 pounds.

How It Performed

In our testing, side sleepers gave the Leesa Original Hybrid outstanding ratings. Its medium firm (6) design felt ideal to this group across different weight categories. A 1-inch memory foam layer lightly conforms to the body, relieving pressure without creating the “hugging” sensation often associated with memory foam. This mattress feels more responsive compared to softer foam hybrids — it’s ideal for sleepers who like a little bounce.

Lighter-weight back and stomach sleepers also felt supported on the Original Hybrid. However, back sleepers over 230 pounds and stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more generally need firmer support than this mattress offers. During performance testing, our team gave the mattress strong ratings for temperature control and edge support.

Construction Breakdown

The Leesa Original Hybrid’s comfort system contains two layers. The top layer is memory foam, which absorbs motion and relieves pressure and the second layer beneath is composed of denser polyfoam to provide transitional support and prevent sleepers from sinking into the support core.

For the support system, an 8-inch layer of steel pocketed coils sits atop a thin base layer of high-density polyfoam. The coils are individually wrapped to prevent motion transfer, and outer coils are reinforced to contribute to edge support. The cover is a blend of polyester and viscose.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Leesa provides free shipping to all 50 states, and delivery to Canada for an extra fee. The Leesa Original Hybrid comes with a 120-night sleep trial, with the requirement that you try the mattress for at least 30 nights. Returns from the contiguous U.S. are free, while those from Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada incur a $100 surcharge. The mattress is backed by a lifetime warranty.

  • Who It’s Best For: People with pain, athletes, and couples seeking motion isolation.
  • Feel: Gentle cradling and even contouring to create the sensation of sleeping “in,” rather than “on,” the bed.
  • What It’s Made Of: The polyester-blend cover is woven with Celliant fibers intended to increase circulation and speed up muscle recovery. The comfort system contains two layers, a gel-infused memory foam layer and a polyfoam layer. Pocketed coils and dense base foam make up the support system.
  • What We Don’t Like: Although Celliant fibers are also designed to regulate temperatures, without the additional cooling layer, this model performs about the same as most other hybrids when it comes to temperature control.
  • Why It Won Best for Back Pain: The Bear Original Hybrid is both contouring and responsive, providing a mixture of “hug” and support that promotes spinal alignment — especially for side sleepers. This combination, along with the Celliant cover, may translate into more comfort during the night and less pain in the morning.

The Bear Original Hybrid is a solid choice for sleepers with chronic or frequent back pain. Gentle, adaptive foam layers conform to the body and promote even spinal alignment, while the cover contains Celliant fibers engineered to promote muscle recovery and restful sleep.

How It Performed

Side sleepers gave the Bear Original Hybrid mostly excellent ratings in our testing. Across body weights, this group enjoyed the bed’s mix of pressure-relieving memory foam and deep support from the pocketed coils. Back and stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds similarly gave the bed above-average ratings, but those weighing 130 pounds or more had mixed experiences.

The Bear Original Hybrid received above-average scores in most categories and performed best at relieving pressure thanks to its close contouring. This ability to hug the body and relieve pressure is one of the reasons why this mattress works so well for sleepers with back pain. However, a potential downside of a more conforming mattress is that some sleepers find it harder to move around on.

Construction Breakdown

A polyester blend fabric with Celliant fibers makes up the Bear Original Hybrid’s cover. The comfort system contains a gel-infused memory foam layer above transitional polyfoam. An optional cooling comfort layer is available for an extra cost. The support core consists of a 6-inch layer of pocketed coils with reinforced edges sitting atop a base layer of dense polyfoam that holds it in place.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Ground shipping to the contiguous U.S. is available for free, while delivery to Alaska and Hawaii comes with a fee. Each mattress comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty. A mattress must be kept for 30 nights before a return can be initiated. Bear doesn’t charge a return fee.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is available in medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8) options. People of virtually all body weights and sleep position preferences should be able to find comfort on at least one of these models. However, each offers different strengths and weaknesses.

How It Performed

Each Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid firmness option performs a bit differently than the other two. The medium soft (4) model conforms to the body and works best for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. Most back and stomach sleepers require something firmer.

The medium firm (6) design appeals to a wider range of sleepers. Side sleepers of all body weights awarded favorable ratings to this model during our testing. Back and stomach sleepers up 230 also liked this bed, but those weighing more didn’t feel properly supported.

The firm (8) model turned out to be the most versatile option. Sleepers across position preferences and body weights rated it average or above. Those weighing 130 pounds or more liked it the best. The firm option has a responsive feel and is also the best as staying cool.

Construction Breakdown

All Signature Hybrid models have a cotton cover quilted with polyfoam to create a plush surface. For an additional price, customers can upgrade to a pillowtop that contains phase change material to promote cooling.

Beneath the cover sits the comfort system, which begins with gel-infused layers of polyfoam and memory foam. Two additional foam layers provide responsiveness and keep sleepers from sinking to the support core, which consists of 8-inch pocketed coils stabilized by supportive base foam.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

The brand offers a 120-night sleep trial, but requires you try the bed for 30 nights and charges $99 for all returns. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is also backed by a lifetime warranty.

Due to its latex comfort layers, the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid Mattress stands out from other beds on our list of best affordable hybrids. Latex is known for being durable, eco-friendly, responsive, and cooling. The firmness options include two firm designs that provide sturdy support and make this mattress a strong choice for people with heavier bodies, especially back and stomach sleepers.

How It Performed

The medium (5) model provided above-average comfort for our testers under 130 pounds, regardless of sleep position. The medium firm (6) model excelled at supporting side sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more, and back and stomach sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.

The two firm models, called Firm (7) and Extra Firm (8), performed well among sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds. The Extra Firm received exceptional scores from back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. Finding mattresses that adequately support heavier stomach sleepers can be difficult, making the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid a rarity.

During our tests, all Honey Hybrid models excelled at remaining cool and being easy to move around on. The Firm and Extra Firm models have more bounce, so they are easier to move on but do not isolate motion or relieve pressure as well as the softer options.

Construction Breakdown

A quilted organic cotton cover encases the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid. New Zealand wool batting provides a natural fire barrier, while two layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex provide light cushioning and strong responsiveness to the comfort system. The support core consists of steel pocketed coils with reinforced edges, followed by an organic cotton and wool base layer for stability.

The SweetNight CoolNest Hybrid works well for sleepers who want a hybrid mattress that conforms closely. It’s available in three profile heights, which correspond to different firmness levels. The 16-inch model is medium soft (4), the 14-inch model is medium (5), and the 12-inch model is medium firm (6).

How It Performed

The SweetNight CoolNest Hybrid performed well for all side sleepers. The plush layers conform to the body, allowing heavier parts to sink in and keep the spine aligned. Comfort for back and stomach sleepers depends on body weight, with lighter-weight individuals enjoying this mattress most. Back and stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds need more support.

The CoolNest Hybrid relieves pressure and isolates motion well, because of its contouring comfort system. That said, the medium firm (6) model isn’t quite as pressure-relieving as the softer models. Overall, the bed performed well in most categories. However, the medium soft (4) model might absorb too much heat for those who sleep hot to enjoy it.

Construction Breakdown

A polyester fabric covers the CoolNest Hybrid. Its comfort system contains five layers. The uppermost layer is gel-infused memory foam. Beneath that sits a layer of polyfoam, then another layer of gel-infused memory foam. These components add to the bed’s adaptive feel, while two additional polyfoam layers provide transitional support. The 14 and 16-inch models contain an additional zoned polyfoam layer.

In all models, the support system consists of pocketed coils with a reinforced perimeter.

The ideal mattress for you is one that fits your specific needs, given your body weight and sleep position preferences. The mattress company’s delivery and setup options should also play a role in your decision. Read on to learn how these factors play into choosing the right mattress for you.

Mattress Type

In addition to hybrid mattresses, there are other mattress types. Familiarizing yourself with each type of mattress may help you decide which one is ideal for you.

  • Hybrid: These beds feature thick comfort layers made of foam or latex over pocketed coils. They generally provide balanced support and a mix of softness and responsiveness.
  • Innerspring: These mattresses contain thin comfort layers over robust coils. They tend to feel bouncy and easy to move around on, but they do not conform much.
  • Memory Foam: These mattress models are constructed with memory foam layers over a dense polyfoam support core. They contour closely to the body, but may retain heat.
  • Latex: These beds contain latex layers in their comfort and support systems. They cushion the body and provide responsive support while staying cool, but do not conform closely.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

To find a hybrid that meets your needs, consider your body weight and which sleep position you primarily use. The needs of a person who weighs less than 130 pounds are much different from those of someone over 230 pounds. Likewise, the best hybrid mattress for you will depend on whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. Based on our hands-on testing, the table below lists which firmness level works best for different sleeper types.

Sleeper Weight RangeFirmness Starting Point
Less than 130 lbs.Soft (3) to medium (5)
130 to 230 lbs.Medium (5) to medium firm (6)
More than 230 lbs.Medium firm (6) to firm (7-8)

Delivery and Setup Options

If you’re shopping on a budget, research shipping and setup options before ordering a mattress. Many mattresses are compressed, rolled, and shipped in a box that is left on your doorstop. Others are delivered unboxed and require someone to be at home on the delivery date.

White Glove delivery and old mattress removal are additional services that involve a delivery person setting up your mattress for you and hauling away the old one. Some companies offer these services for free, but most charge a fee and some don’t offer them at all. Considering your options and the associated costs can ensure your delivery goes smoothly.
