How We Test
How We Determine Our Best Overall Score
With each mattress we test, our team follows the same comprehensive research and evaluation methodology to ensure objective, data-based findings. The mattress testing process consists of four stages, beginning with our detailed analysis of the bed’s construction, materials, and firmness. This cursory exam allows us to calculate an expected lifespan to determine our durability score. We also review the brand’s shipping and return policies, as well as its overall reputation for customer service and satisfaction.
The second stage involves hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. We use a wide range of tools and technology to determine how well the mattress relieves pressure, isolates motion, regulates temperature, and resists deep compression when weight is applied. Once we’ve finished the lab-based stage, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them in their own bedrooms for 2 to 3 weeks. These in-home experiences capture how the mattress performs night to night in an authentic sleep environment. Lastly, we collect and read verified customer reviews of each product to make sure our findings are in line with the general public.
Throughout this four-step testing process, we record data and notes that contribute to each bed’s overall and individual performance ratings. The graph below shows how every performance metric contributes to product scores.

How We Determine the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers With Hip Pain
The team in our Seattle Test Lab strives to find the best mattresses on the market for any given sleeper. During our testing process, we collect both objective and subjective data, and we cross-check our findings with reports from field testers using different mattresses in their homes.
To choose the best mattress for side sleepers with hip pain, we started by narrowing down the list, focusing on models that met key criteria:
- Adaptive layers that can effectively cushion the hips
- Zoned support with extra reinforcement for the midsection
- Impressive pressure relief around the hips and shoulders to support spinal alignment
- High-quality materials that offer dependable and lasting performance
After we narrowed the options down to a shortlist, we identified the top picks, including a best overall choice and the best option for specific situations.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Mattress as a Side Sleeper With Hip Pain
If you’re a side sleeper with hip pain, cushioning is a key consideration when shopping for a mattress. Any mattress that is too firm or rigid will create tension near your hip, and that can aggravate your pain and make it harder to get a good night’s sleep.
However, that doesn’t mean you should choose the softest mattress you come across. While cushioning is important, you also need sufficient support for your shoulders and midsection. An ideal mattress should have enough give to keep you comfortable and enough stability so that the heavier parts of your body don’t sink down into the bed.
Finding this blend of characteristics in a mattress that also matches your budget and personal comfort preferences should be the focus of your mattress shopping.
Mattress Type
Based on our testing, all-foam and hybrid mattresses are most likely to yield great results for side sleeping if you have hip pain.
Foam materials, including memory foam and other specially crafted polyfoams, provide considerable cushioning for your body. They offer contouring that ranges from a gentle cradle to a deep hug, allowing these materials to redistribute pressure away from sore spots like the hips.
As a result, all-foam mattresses often excel at relieving pressure. They also usually isolate motion, so you’re less likely to be disturbed by movement on the other side of the bed. But all-foam models can sleep hot and feel noticeably softer around the edges.
In a hybrid mattress, foam materials are used in the top layers, while metal coils make up the support core. Pocketed coils can give the mattress more resilience and edge support while also reducing the amount of heat that collects in the bed. That said, hybrids may transfer more motion than all-foam beds, and they normally cost a bit more as well.
Sleeping Position and Body Weight
When choosing a mattress, make sure to consider your sleeping position and body weight — both affect your support needs.
Side sleepers normally press most deeply into a mattress around the shoulders and hips. If a mattress is extremely plush, the shoulders and hips can sink down and fall out of line with the rest of the spine. If a mattress is too firm, though, pressure can build up around these joints, which can be painful and interfere with spinal alignment.
The lighter your body weight, the less you sink into the top layers of a mattress. That’s why side sleepers under 130 pounds tend to get more comfort and support from a mattress that’s medium soft (4) or medium (5). For the same reason, side sleepers over 230 pounds typically need a firm (7) mattress to prevent excess sinkage. Those between 130 and 230 pounds usually get the best results from a medium (5) or medium firm (6) model.
| Side Sleeper Weight Range | Firmness Starting Point |
|---|---|
| Less than 130 lbs. | Soft (3) to medium (5) |
| 130 to 230 lbs. | Medium (5) to medium firm (6) |
| More than 230 lbs. | Medium firm (6) to firm (7-8) |
Delivery and Setup Options
Before making a purchase, make sure to factor in your delivery needs and any related costs.
Most online mattresses come with free standard delivery, at least to the contiguous United States. With this delivery option, the mattress will be shipped in a box to your front door, but you’ll have to bring the box inside and remove the packaging — this allows the mattress to expand to its full size. Given a bed’s size and weight, the process usually requires two people. If you’re replacing an existing mattress, you’ll also need to arrange for its disposal.
Some companies offer White Glove delivery, which includes full setup of your new mattress and, often, removal of your previous bed. This can be extremely convenient, especially if you have mobility limitations or don’t have someone available to help you set up the new mattress. However, White Glove delivery normally costs at least $100 extra, and this charge is normally not refundable if you decide to return the mattress.
