For many shoppers, mattresses in a box are the most convenient option. You can purchase them online at any time of day without ever setting foot in a showroom or speaking to a sales representative. There’s another major benefit of purchasing a mattress that ships compressed: affordability. Since compressed mattresses can reduce storage, transportation, and retail costs, manufacturers may be able to offer them at lower prices.
To help you get the best mattress in a box for your money, we’ve analyzed our internal testing data on over 2,000 mattress models to select our top picks. Below, we’ll break down why each stands out and who it may be best for.

How We Test
How We Determine Our Best Overall Score
With each mattress we test, our team follows the same comprehensive research and evaluation methodology to ensure objective, data-based findings. The mattress testing process consists of four stages, beginning with our detailed analysis of the bed’s construction, materials, and firmness. This cursory exam allows us to calculate an expected lifespan to determine our durability score. We also review the brand’s shipping and return policies, as well as its overall reputation for customer service and satisfaction.
The second stage involves hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. We use a wide range of tools and technology to determine how well the mattress relieves pressure, isolates motion, regulates temperature, and resists deep compression when weight is applied. Once we’ve finished the lab-based stage, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them in their own bedrooms for 2 to 3 weeks. These in-home experiences capture how the mattress performs night to night in an authentic sleep environment. Lastly, we collect and read verified customer reviews of each product to make sure our findings are in line with the general public.
Throughout this four-step testing process, we record data and notes that contribute to each bed’s overall and individual performance ratings. The graph below shows how every performance metric contributes to product scores.

How We Determine the Best Luxury Hybrid Mattress
Over the last decade, we’ve personally tested over 2,000 mattress models using our comprehensive testing methodology. Our testing database includes dozens of luxury hybrid models. After compiling a full list, we selected those with high overall performance ratings.
To narrow it down to our final choices, we paid special attention to the following factors:
- Construction: What separates a luxury hybrid from a more traditional hybrid is often advanced materials and design features, such as zoned support, cooling infusions, and specialty cover fabrics.
- Firmness options: Luxury hybrids often come in multiple firmness levels to help each shopper find a suitable option for their body type and primary sleep position. The models we focused on are either available in different firmness levels or offer a midrange that appeals to a wide range of sleeper profiles.
- Strong performance: Whether a mattress is high-end or budget-friendly, its performance matters most at the end of the day. Each of our top luxury hybrid picks excelled in at least one or two areas that impressed our team during hands-on mattress tests.

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid
A foam hybrid that cushions your body without trapping heat.
Key Details
- Who It’s Best For: Hot sleepers and couples.
- Feel: Available in medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) designs, the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid offers a close contour and zoned support with extra bounce beneath your midsection.
- What It’s Made Of: A four-layer comfort system combining polyfoam and memory foam over a zoned pocketed coil core and a high-density foam base.
- What We Don’t Like: None of the designs may not be supportive enough for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds.
- Why It Won Best Overall: The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid’s generous comfort system offers significant contouring and pressure relief without trapping much heat against a sleeper’s body. The three firmness options also provide choices to meet the unique needs and preferences of different sleeper types.
Scoring & Reviews
The following ratings show how suitable this mattress is for different sleeping positions and sleeper weights. These scores are determined by how well the mattress supports and relieves pressure for each sleeper type.
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Performance
Since the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is available in three available firmness options and offers strong performance across testing categories, we’d expect most sleepers to find the mattress comfortable. It comes in medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) options, so there’s a design that’s compatible with most body types and sleep positions.
How It Performed
Almost all of our testing team members found at least one firmness option of the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid exceptionally comfortable.
Best Mattress for Side Sleepers: Helix Midnight Luxe
Best for Side Sleepers
9.7/10Test Lab Score
Helix Midnight Luxe
A foam-on coil hybrid that excels at pressure relief, motion isolation, and sleeper support.
Key Details
- Who It’s Best For: Side sleepers of all weights, back and stomach sleepers under 230 pounds, and sleepers who use the edge of the bed extensively.
- Feel: A medium firm (6) feel with deep, even conforming with robust zoned support.
- What It’s Made Of: Comfort layers of memory foam and adaptive polyfoam over a pocketed coil core with zoning and reinforced edges. The cover is made of moisture-wicking Tencel fabric.
- What We Don’t Like: The hug of the mattress can make position changes slightly more difficult, and the deep contouring isn’t ideal for many stomach sleepers — especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds.
- Why It Won Best for Side Sleepers: The Midnight Luxe offers exceptional pressure relief, redistributing buildup away from a side sleeper’s sensitive hips and shoulders.
Performance

Since side sleeping is the most popular position, many mattresses on the market support it. However, the Helix Midnight Luxe was designed specifically with this position in mind. Its midrange, medium firm (6) feel is appropriate for side sleepers across body types. The cradling of the memory foam comfort system can help reduce sharp pressure points around a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders, but the supportive design also limits excessive sinkage that could otherwise contribute to poor alignment.
How It Performed
The Midnight Luxe is designed for side sleepers, so it was no surprise that our testers who favor the side position gave the mattress its highest ratings. They noted solid support and little to no discomfort around their shoulders and hips. Many back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds also found the mattress comfortable, though Helix has other models designed to cater more directly to the specific needs of these sleep positions.
Best Cooling Mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
Best Cooling
9.7/10Test Lab Score
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
A luxury hybrid with deep foam layers and cooling technology.
Key Details
- Who It’s Best For: Couples and hot sleepers.
- Feel: Medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7) versions are available. Each design offers a distinct combination of adaptive contouring and pushback around the midsection.
- What It’s Made Of: The comfort system uses polyfoam and memory foam layers, while the core includes a zoned pocketed coil core with reinforced edges and a dense foam base.
- What We Don’t Like: Mattress returns incur a $99 fee.
- Why It Won Best Cooling: The Aurora Luxe incorporates a heat-dissipating cover, copper-infused foam, and other components intended to ensure strong temperature regulation. The coil system also promotes interior airflow to keep the interior cool. Despite its noticeable’ hug, we didn’t detect a lot of lingering heat on the Aurora Luxe’s surface.
Performance
Unwanted heat retention can make even an otherwise optimal mattress feel uncomfortable. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe offers a breathable design with cooling components to help neutralize the temperature of the surface. And with medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7) options available, most sleepers should be able to find a version that’s appropriate for their body type, position preference, and temperature regulation needs.
How It Performed
We tested all three of the Aurora Luxe’s firmness options to get a clearer idea of who might be the best candidates for each design. The medium soft (4) was well suited to side sleepers under 130 pounds, while side sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more found both the medium firm (6) and firm (7) comfortable. The two firmer options were also a better match for most of our back and stomach sleepers.
Best Mattress for Back Pain: Bear Elite Hybrid
Best for Back Pain
8.5/10Test Lab Score
Bear Elite Hybrid
A close-conforming memory foam hybrid offering great pressure relief.
Key Details

The memory foam and polyfoam comfort system helps relieve pressure, while the five-zone coil system provides a targeted lift around the lower back. Three firmness options also allow more flexibility to find a version suitable for your body type and preferred sleep position.
Performance

The right amount of support is important for all sleepers, but for those with back pain, it can be even more critical. The Bear Elite Hybrid incorporates a five-zone coil core designed to keep the spine aligned and promote proper sleep posture. At the same time, the memory foam and polyfoam comfort system molds to a sleeper’s curves for close cradling and pressure relief. Three firmness options also ensure the mattress is a good match for most sleeper profiles.
How It Performed
Our team evaluated each of the Bear Elite Hybrid’s three firmness options. The medium (5) was a favorite among side sleepers under 130 pounds, while the medium firm (6) appealed more to side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds along with back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. For side sleepers over 230 pounds and back and stomach sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds, the firm (8) stood out.

Since the Nolah Evolution comes in three firmness options, most shoppers should be able to select a version that’s right for their body type and standard sleep position.

Selecting the right firmness is critical for nightlong comfort. To accommodate a wide range of sleeper types, the DLX Premier Hybrid comes in four options: soft (3), medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8). Couples can also choose a split design with a different firmness on each side of the bed, so neither partner has to compromise, and the main comfort layer can be switched out to change the firmness if your preferences change down the road.
How It Performed
We tested every DLX Premier Hybrid firmness option, and each has strengths for certain sleepers. The two softer models are well suited to lighter weight side sleepers, while the firmer designs are a better fit for side sleepers over 230 pounds and most back and stomach sleepers across different weight categories.

Performance
Four hybrid versions of the Serta iSeries NXG Mattress are available to accommodate different needs and preferences. We’re spotlighting the 3500 model for its luxurious design, which includes memory foam and minicoils over a bed of five-zone pocketed coils. This construction ensures a soothing contour on the surface and extra reinforcement around the lumbar region, and you can choose from two firmness levels.
How It Performed
The iSeries NXG 3500 Hybrid performed well during our hands-on tests, particularly among side sleepers. Those weighing up to 230 pounds preferred the plusher feel of the medium (5) model, while side sleepers over 230 pounds or more found the firm (7) design more comfortable and supportive. Most back and stomach sleepers on our team gave higher ratings to the firm version, as well.
What to Consider When Shopping for a Luxury Hybrid Mattress
Luxury hybrid models frequently share a few common characteristics, like pressure relief, motion isolation, and responsiveness. However, their unique designs determine where they excel, possible tradeoffs that may arise, and who these beds are best suited for. You have plenty of options to choose from, so paying special attention to these key areas help you during the selection process.
Mattress Type
By definition, hybrid mattresses contain a comfort system with thick, adaptive layers over a coil support core. However, even within the hybrid category, there are several different mattress types.
Foam hybrids use polyfoam or memory foam comfort layers for deep contouring and cradling. Latex hybrids use natural or synthetic latex for a more buoyant feel. Microcoil comfort systems can also provide contouring while providing more bounce and allowing extra airflow.
Any of these designs may be ideal depending on your priorities. For individuals who sleep especially hot, latex and microcoil comfort systems are appealing for their added breathability. For those who prefer close conforming, a foam hybrid may be the better option.
Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Sleep position and body weight are two of the top factors that influence what you need in a luxury hybrid mattress.
When you lie on your side, your downward shoulder and hip may dig harder into a mattress, so you may prefer a softer surface that redistributes that compression. For back sleepers, the lumbar area is the key region. A mattress that molds to the lower back may be more comfortable, but it should also support the hips enough to prevent overextension.
Stomach sleepers can sink deeply into their mattress, putting strain on their lower backs. This is why most people who use this position prefer a firmer and more supportive mattress, but many stomach sleepers also appreciate surface-level cushioning.
Similarly, body weight influences how much the mattress compresses beneath you. On the same mattress, someone who weighs less than 130 pounds won’t sink in nearly as much as someone weighing more than 230 pounds. For that reason, lighter individuals often prefer softer surfaces, while heavier people may need extra support.
| Sleeper Weight Range | Firmness Starting Point |
|---|---|
| Less than 130 lbs. | Soft (3) to medium (5) |
| 130 to 230 lbs. | Medium (5) to medium firm (6) |
| More than 230 lbs. | Medium firm (6) to firm (7-8) |
Delivery and Setup Options
Most mattresses sold online ship compressed, rolled, and encased in a box. You’ll be responsible for carrying the bed into your home and setting it up. Mattresses in a box tend to be heavy, so this process often requires two able-bodied adults. Since luxury hybrid models are often thicker and heavier than lower-priced alternatives, setting the bed up yourself may require extra effort — especially if you order a larger mattress size.
If you feel comfortable setting up your mattress yourself, selecting one that ships compressed may shave some money off the total purchase price. If you’d rather have someone deliver it and set it up for you, look for models that include an option for White Glove delivery. However, note that White Glove fees are not typically refundable if you choose to return the mattress.
