Buying a mattress online might seem intimidating or risky at first, but the process is actually quite painless. The trick is to research and compare as many different brands and models as possible before deciding which mattress you want.

- Shipping: Online “mattress-in-a-box” brands usually provide free ground shipping anywhere in the contiguous U.S. Some brands extend this offer to Alaska, Hawaii, and/or Canada – but if you live outside the lower 48 states, you’ll probably pay additional delivery fees. Other options, such as expedited ground shipping or White Glove delivery, will also incur extra charges from most brands.
- Returns: While the majority of online mattress brands offer free return shipping and full refunds, some charge return fees during the sleep trial period. You may also need to pay extra for exchanges, especially if you upgrade to a more expensive model.
- New Accessories: If the new mattress you’ve selected is thicker than your current bed or you’re planning to order a different size, then you’ll most likely need a new foundation and sheet set. These accessories can increase your overall spending by a considerable amount, even if you bundle them with the mattress.
Make Your Selection

Unbox and Enjoy
If you choose standard ground shipping, the mattress should reach your residence within a week or two – though wait times may be longer during Cyber Monday sales. The mattress will be delivered to your doorstep. Before carrying it inside, we recommend getting assistance from a roommate or family member, as the mattresses can be quite heavy.
Bring the mattress to the room of your choice and set the box on the foundation or bed frame you plan to use. The mattress will be compressed and wrapped in plastic. Your sleep trial may begin on the date of purchase or delivery. Some brands require a break-in period of 15-30 days, which allows you to get used to the mattress. You won’t be able to return the mattress for a full refund until this break-in period ends.
We recommend sleeping on the mattress for the entire sleep trial. This gives you as much time as possible to decide if the mattress is right for you, or if you need to keep looking. In most cases, there won’t be any sort of penalty or added fee for keeping the mattress for the whole duration.
