For many shoppers, mattresses in a box are the most convenient option. You can purchase them online at any time of day without ever setting foot in a showroom or speaking to a sales representative. There’s another major benefit of purchasing a mattress that ships compressed: affordability. Since compressed mattresses can reduce storage, transportation, and retail costs, manufacturers may be able to offer them at lower prices.

To help you get the best mattress in a box for your money, we’ve analyzed our internal testing data on over 2,000 mattress models to select our top picks. Below, we’ll break down why each stands out and who it may be best for.

Our #1 Pick: Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex checks all of the important boxes if you’re looking for a breathable, pressure-relieving mattress in a box with an approachable sticker price. Our testers especially love the zoned support system — this feature is normally found in mattresses that cost much more.

How We Test

How We Determine Our Best Overall Score

With each mattress we test, our team follows the same comprehensive research and evaluation methodology to ensure objective, data-based findings. The mattress testing process consists of four stages, beginning with our detailed analysis of the bed’s construction, materials, and firmness. This cursory exam allows us to calculate an expected lifespan to determine our durability score. We also review the brand’s shipping and return policies, as well as its overall reputation for customer service and satisfaction.

The second stage involves hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. We use a wide range of tools and technology to determine how well the mattress relieves pressure, isolates motion, regulates temperature, and resists deep compression when weight is applied. Once we’ve finished the lab-based stage, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them in their own bedrooms for 2 to 3 weeks. These in-home experiences capture how the mattress performs night to night in an authentic sleep environment. Lastly, we collect and read verified customer reviews of each product to make sure our findings are in line with the general public.

Throughout this four-step testing process, we record data and notes that contribute to each bed’s overall and individual performance ratings. The graph below shows how every performance metric contributes to product scores.

How We Determine Our Best Overall Score

How We Determine the Best Affordable Mattress in a Box

Since we’ve evaluated over 2,000 mattress models, we needed to filter down our options to home in on our top picks for the best affordable mattress in a box. We primarily looked at these factors:

  • Quality: Some budget-friendly models cut corners to reduce costs. We looked for options that didn’t skimp on their materials or design, favoring those built for comfort and durability.
  • Value: If a mattress doesn’t perform well, it’s not a good value even if it’s affordably priced. That’s why we looked for models that earned strong performance ratings based on our testing team’s feedback.
  • Setup: Setting up the mattress yourself shouldn’t be overly complicated or time-consuming, so we prioritized options with straightforward unpacking and setup instructions.

High-quality memory foam models are popular for their superior pressure relief and motion isolation, but they frequently come with a premium price tag. The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam provides a similar experience in a more approachable budget range.

How It Performed

Because of its all-foam construction and plush comfort system, the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam performed especially well in our motion isolation and pressure relief tests. At the same time, it earned higher scores in temperature neutrality and edge support than many of the other all-foam models we’ve tested.

Our testers noted that the medium firm (6) feel was especially well suited to side sleeping. Most team members found it at least moderately comfortable for this position, though those between 130 and 230 pounds thought it was closer to ideal. Its polyfoam and memory foam comfort system cradled their hips and shoulders, so they didn’t feel like they were digging in too hard.

Back sleepers under 230 pounds also found the mattress comfortable, as did stomach sleepers under 130 pounds.

Construction Breakdown

This model begins with a quilted cover incorporating 1 inch of foam for padding. A 1.5-inch memory foam layer underneath adds close conforming, while a copper infusion in the material is built for heat control and antimicrobial properties. Three layers of polyfoam round out the comfort system, measuring a total of 4.5 inches. The final .75-inch layer is zoned for targeted lumbar support. A high-density polyfoam base layer serves as the core.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam ships free in the contiguous U.S. The mattress also comes with a 120-night sleep trial. Brooklyn Bedding asks that you try the mattress for at least 30 nights, and a $99 fee applies for returns. A lifetime warranty covers qualifying defects for as long as you own the mattress.

Designed specifically with side sleepers in mind, the Helix Midnight has a medium firm (6) feel along with balanced contouring and support to accommodate most individuals who favor the position — as well as a large number of back and stomach sleepers.

How It Performed

In our testing, the Helix Midnight’s suitability for side sleepers is what stood out most. It appealed to our team members across weight ranges for its supportive yet cradling feel. Some back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds also found it comfortable, though those over 230 pounds would have preferred a firmer surface.

Additionally, the reinforced perimeter garnered positive feedback in our edge support tests, with team members feeling secure using the full area. Thanks to a comfort system that contours closely, the mattress also performed well during pressure relief tests. We also didn’t detect much heat buildup due to the breathable design, but hot sleepers may prefer to upgrade the top layer to the GlacioTex option designed for additional cooling.

Construction Breakdown

A breathable knit cover encases the surface with a memory foam directly underneath to mold to the sleeper’s body. Two layers of polyfoam follow to deepen the contouring while adjusting quickly to position changes.

Pocketed coils make up the core, adding some bounce and making movement easier while limiting the spread of motion. Reinforced sides ensure edge-to-edge support so that sleepers feel more stable sitting or sleeping along the perimeter. The coils are also zoned to reinforce your torso and hips. A stabilizing polyfoam base rounds out the hybrid design.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Standard shipping is free within the contiguous U.S., and delivery is available at a charge for orders to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. The mattress also has a 120-night trial period with a 30-night minimum. A lifetime warranty provides coverage if an eligible defect arises.

Memory foam mattresses are popular for the way they mold to a sleeper’s body and isolate motion, but that close contouring can also trap heat and make changing positions more difficult. The Leesa Original’s design takes that into account to enhance the overall sleep experience.

How It Performed

As a medium (5) model, the Leesa Original was the best fit for our testers who sleep on their sides. While it was comfortable across weight groups, those under 130 pounds reported the most comfortable balance of contouring and support because they could sink in without feeling like their hips or shoulders were sagging. Some under 130 pounds also enjoyed lying on their backs or stomachs on the mattress, though most of our testers felt a firmer surface would be better suited to those positions.

Like most memory foam mattresses, the Leesa Original excelled in motion isolation and pressure relief. However, the mattress also outperformed other memory foam models in terms of ease of movement and temperature regulation. These qualities mean you can change positions without feeling trapped, and shouldn’t overheat during the night. That said, hot sleepers might consider the optional cooling cover upgrade.

Construction Breakdown

A knit cover consisting of polyester and viscose wraps around the mattress. The top comfort layer uses 2 inches of dense polyfoam built for breathability and pressure relief. Underneath, 2 inches of memory foam deepens the hug, and a 6-inch polyfoam core stabilizes the mattress.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Free standard shipping is available to all 50 U.S. states. The Leesa Original also comes with a 120-night trial. A lifetime warranty covers the mattress for as long as you retain original ownership.

For shoppers on a budget looking for a hybrid model, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is hard to beat. It comes in three firmness options to accommodate different body types and sleep positions, and the design is more advanced than we typically see for hybrids at this price-point.

How It Performed

This model comes in three firmness options, so performance varies. The medium soft (4) design was a favorite among our side-sleeping testers under 130 pounds. This model also excelled in our pressure relief and motion isolation testing.

The medium firm (6) appealed to side sleepers across weight groups, along with back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. It offered significant pressure relief and motion isolation. Additionally, it earned decent marks for edge support.

The firm (8) was an especially strong match for side sleepers over 230 pounds, and it worked well for many back and stomach sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds. While it didn’t perform as well as softer options for motion isolation and pressure relief, its enhanced edge support, temperature regulation, and ease of movement stood out to our team.

Construction Breakdown

A cover featuring GlacioTex fabric designed for cooling tops the mattress. An optional upgrade adds a pillow-top for extra contouring and temperature regulation.

Next, two .75-inch layers of quilting foam cushion the surface, while a 1-inch layer of memory foam helps cradle the sleeper’s body. Two 1-inch layers of polyfoam underneath add balanced, responsive contouring. An 8-inch pocketed coil system further enhances the motion isolation, contouring, and edge support, and a final .75-inch polyfoam layer gives the coils a stable base.

Brooklyn Bedding offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S. Delivery to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada costs extra. A 120-night sleep trial with a 30-night minimum break-in period applies, and returns incur a $99 fee. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid also comes with a lifetime warranty.

The Bear Original is a firm (7), all-foam mattress that incorporates components engineered for cooling. Our testers found this to be a great combination to help limit heat retention, making it a good option for many hot sleepers.

How It Performed

During our testing, side sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more reported the best results. They sank in a bit, but not enough to create pressure buildup. Those under 130 pounds noticed their hips and shoulders digging into the surface more than they would have liked. The mattress also provided good support for stomach sleepers under 230 pounds, and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds generally liked the balance of cushioning and support.

Since the Bear Original is on the firmer side, our team members found it fairly easy to move on. We also didn’t detect much motion transfer.

Construction Breakdown

This mattress starts with a Celliant cover, which is designed to dissipate heat and regulate temperature. A layer of memory foam underneath adds subtle conforming, while a gel swirl in the material is intended to keep the surface cool. A layer of firmer polyfoam adds lift, bounce, and conforming without much sinkage. The final 6-inch polyfoam core adds support and structure.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty

Bear offers free shipping within the contiguous U.S., a 120-night trial period, and a lifetime warranty. Additional shipping charges may apply to Alaska and Hawaii, and you must sleep on your mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return.

The Layla Hybrid uses a flippable design with a different firmness on each side, letting sleepers choose between plush medium soft (4) or supportive firm (7) surfaces. Having options may appeal to sleepers with back pain whose needs may fluctuate. The memory foam comfort systems on either side also help mold to the sleeper’s unique shape.

How It Performed

Each of the Layla Hybrid’s two sides performed well in our testing, but they varied in their strengths. The medium soft (4) side stood out to side sleepers under 130 pounds for its more significant cradling. We also observed less motion transfer and more even pressure distribution from this side of the mattress.

The extra support of the firm (7) side was a favorite among side sleepers over 230 pounds, along with back and stomach sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds. Its responsive surface also made the bed easier for testers to move on and made the edges feel more supportive.

Back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds along with side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds generally found either firmness suitable but not ideal, noting that the medium soft side felt too plush while the firm side could use more cushioning.

Construction Breakdown

Both sides of the mattress begin with memory foam that closely conforms to the sleeper’s body to redistribute pressure. The material is infused with copper-gel microbeads intended for cooling and antimicrobial properties. Transitional polyfoam reinforces the comfort layers. On the medium soft side, this polyfoam layer is also zoned with channels for extra air circulation and midsection support.

Sandwiched between the two comfort systems is a pocketed coil core that supports either side, adding some bounce while restricting motion transfer. A reinforced perimeter helps stabilize the edge, and the coils are zoned for extra pushback against your torso and hips.

A polyester blend cover wraps around the mattress, and handles on the sides can be helpful when you flip.

Shipping is free inside the contiguous U.S. and available at a charge for orders to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Layla also provides a 120-night trial policy with a minimum 4-week trial period. A 10-year warranty covers qualifying defects.

Many couples are left splitting the difference on their firmness preferences and settling on something that isn’t ideal for either of them. With split firmness options, the DLX Premier Hybrid makes it easier for each partner to choose a feel that’s a better match for their body type and position preference.

How It Performed

Across all four firmness options, the DLX Premier Hybrid has solid edge support thanks to the coil core’s reinforced perimeter. Because of this, our team members felt comfortable making full use of the surface area regardless of the firmness. Pressure relief is also strong across the board due to the generous comfort system, though this strength is less pronounced in the firm (8) model.

Beyond that, performance varies somewhat between firmness levels. The firmer options earned higher ratings for temperature control, ease of movement, and edge support, while the softer versions earned higher marks for motion isolation.

Among our team members, the softer options were also more popular for side sleepers under 130 pounds, while side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds — particularly back and stomach sleepers — favored the firmer versions.

Construction Breakdown

The DLX Premier Hybrid starts with a fabric cover that includes viscose fiber batting for breathability and cushioning. Two layers of polyfoam underneath that add cradling and pressure relief.

The overall firmness of the bed is influenced largely by the next layer, which consists of 3 inches of polyfoam. This layer can be swapped out to change the feel of the mattress across the four available firmness options.

Next, a .75-inch layer of polyfoam makes the transition between the plush comfort system and firmer core more seamless. Depending on the profile option, the core beneath is either a 6- or 8-inch pocketed coil system. Narrower coils around the edge help stabilize the perimeter. What to Consider When Shopping for an Affordable Mattress in a Box

The best affordable mattress in a box should be reasonably priced, comfortable to sleep on, and convenient to set up. As with any mattress purchase, a lot of the key considerations relate to personal preferences and sleep styles. However, there are some additional implications to consider when looking for a cheap mattress that ships compressed.

Mattress Type

Selecting the right mattress type for you can impact your sleep experience.

Foam models are often among the most budget-friendly options, and they frequently ship in a box. For sleepers looking for motion isolation and pressure relief, they may be a top option.

Approachably priced innerspring models are also widely available, and they can ship compressed. An innerspring mattress tends to have a springy feel, limited heat retention, and supportive perimeter.

Hybrid mattresses are popular for their balance of responsiveness, motion isolation, breathability, and conforming. However, they typically carry higher price tags.

Latex mattresses are often more expensive and heavier than other designs, which may make it harder to find an option that sits within your budget and is easy enough to set up. However, they’re popular for their temperature regulation, responsiveness, and durability.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Sleeping position and body weight are two of the most significant determining factors in how sleepers experience a mattress.

Side sleepers tend to need more cradling to reduce pressure around their hips and shoulders, so they may prefer a somewhat softer mattress. Back sleepers generally benefit from a balance of conforming and support to mold to the shape of their lower back without letting their hips sag. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, usually need the firmest surface to adequately support their midsections. However, many also like surface-level cushioning to prevent the bed from feeling too hard.

You should also factor in your body weight when picking a mattress. Sleepers under 130 pounds typically prefer a softer surface because they don’t sink in as easily. Those between 130 and 230 pounds tend to gravitate toward the middle of the firmness range based largely on their position preference. Individuals over 230 pounds often favor firmer mattresses, so that they don’t sink in too deeply and jeopardize their sleep posture.

Sleeper Weight RangeFirmness Starting Point
Less than 130 lbs.Soft (3) to medium (5)
130 to 230 lbs.Medium (5) to medium firm (6)
More than 230 lbs.Medium firm (6) to firm (7-8)

Delivery and Setup Options

An affordable mattress in a box usually arrives compressed, rolled, wrapped in plastic, and encased in a box, leaving it up to the buyer to unpack and set up themselves. This is generally the most budget-friendly approach. However, some companies offer White Glove delivery for an additional charge, which involves a team coming to unpack and set up your mattress for you.

How to Unbox a Mattress

Follow the unpacking instructions provided by the mattress manufacturer to ensure you set it up properly and avoid causing damage. While the specific process may vary slightly depending on which model you purchase, most mattresses in a box share a similar unboxing process:

  1. Move the boxed mattress into your room of choice. This will likely require two physically able adults.
  2. Carefully cut open the box and slide out the wrapped mattress.
  3. Remove the outer layer of plastic and start unrolling the mattress. Do not unseal the compression layer yet unless the instructions call for it.
  4. Place the mattress on your bed.
  5. Carefully cut through the vacuum-sealed plastic layer, making sure to avoid nicking the mattress.
  6. Pull away the remaining plastic.
  7. Allow the mattress to begin expanding before use. Many mattresses take a couple of days to reach their full dimensions and release all of their off-gassing smells, but many can be slept on within a few hours of unpacking them.
