Our testing team sifted through thousands of mattresses we’ve tested over the last decade to find models that are best for back pain. For this guide, we specifically looked at hybrid mattresses, which contain comfort layers of foam or latex over coil support systems. Keep reading to find out which hybrid mattresses performed the best for back pain during our hands-on testing.

How We Test
How We Determine Our Best Overall Score
With each mattress we test, our team follows the same comprehensive research and evaluation methodology to ensure objective, data-based findings. The mattress testing process consists of four stages, beginning with our detailed analysis of the bed’s construction, materials, and firmness. This cursory exam allows us to calculate an expected lifespan to determine our durability score. We also review the brand’s shipping and return policies, as well as its overall reputation for customer service and satisfaction.
The second stage involves hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. We use a wide range of tools and technology to determine how well the mattress relieves pressure, isolates motion, regulates temperature, and resists deep compression when weight is applied. Once we’ve finished the lab-based stage, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them in their own bedrooms for 2 to 3 weeks. These in-home experiences capture how the mattress performs night to night in an authentic sleep environment. Lastly, we collect and read verified customer reviews of each product to make sure our findings are in line with the general public.
Throughout this four-step testing process, we record data and notes that contribute to each bed’s overall and individual performance ratings. The graph below shows how every performance metric contributes to product scores.

How We Determine the Best Hybrid Mattress for Back Pain
Our product testing database includes more than 2,000 mattresses that have come through our Seattle Test Lab. In order to determine the best hybrid mattress for back pain, we filtered this data based on the following criteria.
- Hybrid construction: In order to make this list, the bed has to be a true hybrid. This means it has a coil support core topped by foam or latex comfort and transition layers that are plush and substantial enough to differentiate the mattress from a traditional innerspring bed.
- Even alignment for all sleeper types. A huge part of easing back pain is ensuring the sleeper is properly supported. While the degree of support a mattress provides will depend on the sleeping position and weight of the sleeper, some beds are generally more supportive than others. We averaged our sleeper type ratings for each bed to ensure a high degree of support across the board.
- Pressure Relief: Excess pressure buildup around the shoulders and hips can also contribute to back pain. We looked at beds that tested well for pressure relief in our lab.
After narrowing things down to a handful of beds that excelled in these areas, we assigned each bed accolades based on their particular strengths.

Scoring & Reviews
The following ratings show how suitable this mattress is for different sleeping positions and sleeper weights. These scores are determined by how well the mattress supports and relieves pressure for each sleeper type.
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Performance
Back pain and poor spinal alignment often go hand-in-hand, and the wrong mattress can exacerbate both problems. The Endy Hybrid, on the other hand, offers a supportive design that cushions the body and cradles the spine while pushing back against your weight to keep you on an even plane. There are three firmness levels to choose from, so most sleepers should be able to find a design that improves their alignment and relieves pain.
How It Performed
Our team tested all three of the Endy Hybrid’s firmness levels. The medium soft (4) build is well suited to side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds and don’t mind a close body hug. Heavier side sleepers, as well as back and stomach sleepers, will probably be more content with the medium firm (6) or firm (7) models. These designs don’t contour as closely, and you’ll feel more pushback from the coils, so deep sinkage beneath the torso and hips is less likely.
Best Mattress for Motion Isolation: Lull Luxe Hybrid
Best Mattress for Motion Isolation
8.7/10Test Lab Score
Lull Luxe Hybrid
A balanced foam hybrid with light cushioning and responsive support.
Key Details
- Who It’s Best For: Side sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more, couples, and people with chronic shoulder, lower back, or hip pain.
- Feel: Medium firm (6) construction with a surface that gently conforms and dense underlying support layers to stabilize the mattress and prevent you from sinking too much.
- What It’s Made Of: A comfort system with quilted open-cell memory foam over two layers of adaptive polyfoam, followed by a high-density foam base. The cover is a breathable stretch-rayon blend.
- What We Don’t Like: Many back and stomach sleepers will need a firmer and more supportive mattress.
- Why It Won Best Motion Isolation: The Lull Luxe Hybrid’s four-layer all-foam design absorbs movement and all but eliminates motion transfer across the surface. This is impressive for a coil mattress, and all but ensures couples and co-sleepers will get the rest they need.
Performance
If you struggle with back pain and sleep with a partner, the ideal mattress should both alleviate your discomfort and provide a surface that absorbs and isolates motion. The Lull Luxe Hybrid checks both boxes, with a cushy medium firm (6) design that side sleepers should find especially appealing. A budget-friendly price tag and lengthy sleep trial further sweeten the deal for value seekers.
How It Performed
The Lull Luxe Hybrid is medium firm (6) with thick foam layers in its comfort system and sturdy-yet-gentle pocketed coils. As such, the mattress was a big hit among our side sleepers. The top layer provides deep, even contouring to promote even alignment and cushion the shoulders and hips — two areas where side sleepers are prone to pressure buildup. Our hands-on tests show that back sleepers under 130 pounds should also get the padding they need to alleviate pain without sinking too deeply.
What to Consider When Shopping for a Hybrid Mattress for Back Pain
Hybrid mattresses are popular for their balanced designs, which incorporate comfort layers of foam or latex over a pocketed coil support core. If you have back pain and are shopping for a hybrid mattress, it’s important to look for elements that generally alleviate pain while also taking your preferred sleep position and body weight into account.
What Makes a Mattress Good for Back Pain?
A mattress can help alleviate back pain by promoting spinal alignment and keeping the body on an even plane. When the spine isn’t properly aligned, the shoulders, lower back, and hips may sink too much and pressure can build in these areas. Similarly, when body weight isn’t evenly distributed across a mattress, pressure points can build up beneath heavier body parts, leading to discomfort.
Conforming memory foam is often associated with excellent pressure relief. This material is engineered to distribute your weight across the bed and promote spinal alignment by letting heavier body parts to sink in, but not too deeply. Zoned layers in the comfort system and support core also help with this goal because they provide stronger support in some areas and more cradling in others.
Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Medium firm mattresses tend to perform the best for people with back pain, especially those between 130 and 230 pounds. However, it’s important to keep in mind that your body weight and sleep position play a major role in how firm or soft your ideal mattress feels. The best mattress for your back pain is one that can keep your spine aligned, support your body, and relieve pressure points while you sleep.
Generally, side sleepers find comfort on softer mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers need firmer beds to keep their spines aligned. Similarly, lighter-weight sleepers typically prefer a plush mattress that hugs their body, while heavier folks need strong support to prevent excessive sinkage.
To complicate things, terms like “soft,” “medium,” and “firm” aren’t standardized across mattress brands. For these reasons, our testing team represents a wide range of body types and sleep position preferences. This diversity helps ensure our ratings are helpful for all types of sleepers.
