Our Testing Team’s Take

Sleep Foundation’s testing team conducts real-world, hands-on product testing in its Seattle lab.  Using a comprehensive mattress rating system, in-depth product research methodology, and data collection technology, the testing team measures mattress performance from both a data-driven and personal sleep experience level.

Throughout the testing process, our team looks at how a mattress performs in several categories, including motion transfer, pressure relief, and heat retention. Our diverse testers all are of different body types and have a variety of sleep styles and needs, ensuring that many perspectives are considered, too.

Our Verdict

While both the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid and Bear Elite Hybrid mattress have a similar construction and share many attributes, there are some subtle differences that can make one more appealing than the other, especially depending on your sleep preferences.

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is a well-rated mattress overall. It offers a good balance of support and contouring, very little sinkage, and great breathability for those who sleep hot. However, people in larger bodies or stomach sleepers may not feel as supported.

For me as a side sleeper, the medium firm option hit the sweet spot. It cushioned my shoulders without letting me sink in too far. I noticed very little motion transfer, which made it easy to stay asleep even when there was movement on the other side of the bed.

The Bear Elite Hybrid stands out for its edge support and even earned a distinction as the best mattress for athletes because of its ability to relieve pressure in the shoulders, hips, and lower back. It’s not the best at temperature retention, but it ranked high for durability and edge support.

While some mattresses with memory foam feel too soft to me, that wasn’t an issue with the Bear Elite Hybrid. It kept my lower back supported, letting me settle in for quality sleep.

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Breakdown

This hybrid mattress has a 14-inch profile and comes in three firmness levels to accommodate different types of sleepers: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7). With several layers of foam and a supportive pocketed coil base, sleepers will feel comfortable and cradled on this bed without sinking in.

As a hybrid, the Leesa Sapira Chill is able to contour to the body but still retain that springy feeling and core support that many sleepers prefer. The foam layers help provide pressure relief and absorb motion in case you have a sleeping partner (or pet, or child). Below that, there’s an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils that provide extra reinforcement to support your body.

There’s also cooling fibers in the quilted cover, open-cell foam layers, and ventilated airflow through the pocketed coils, which means it’s a good option for warm sleepers.

Bear Elite Hybrid Breakdown

Pressure relief and support is the key benefit of this hybrid from Bear, which clocks in with a 14-inch profile. It also comes in three firmness options: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8), but its firmest model is extra supportive for sleepers in heavier bodies.

The mattress has four interior layers that each play a role in providing a cushioned, supportive night’s sleep. First, memory foam infused with copper (to reduce heat buildup) helps with pressure relief and motion isolation. This is followed by polyfoam, which is more responsive to prevent sinkage, and then individually-wrapped metal coils to create robust support. Lastly, there is high-density polyfoam in the bottom to minimize vibrations and noise.

Testers also found that the mattress’ edge support is excellent, allowing sleepers to stretch out all the way to the perimeter without sinking in. Those with lower back pain should know that this model was our pick for best lumbar support as well. However, where it excels for comfort, its coolness factor falls short.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both of these hybrid mattresses are available in twin, twin XL, queen, king, and California king sizes. The Bear Elite Hybrid also has a split king option.

Both the Leesa and Bear have a 14-inch profile, making it an easy fit for standard sized sheets. As for weight, the Bear is slightly heavier, so it’s recommended that you have someone assist you when trying to turn the mattress.

Performance Ratings

Our performance ratings are based on how a mattress performs across a number of categories that impact sleep quality and comfort. Our testers sleep on the mattresses and perform scientific testing to see how well each mattress responds to movement, how it feels along the body’s pressure points, if the mattress traps heat or provides a cooler feel, its responsiveness and support around the perimeter of the bed, and more.

Using this methodology, the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid comes out on top with a higher score overall (9.0 out of 10), but the Bear Elite Hybrid isn’t far behind, also earning an impressive score (8.4 out of 10). Choosing one over the other comes down to sleep style and budget.

Both mattresses have mostly strong category performance scores, but the Leesa mattress gets especially high marks for pressure relief and temperature control. The Bear stands out more for its durability and edge support. Because each mattress comes in three different firmness levels, some options are better than others depending on if you’re a side, back, or stomach sleepers or what your weight is.

Leesa scores well across most sleep positions and weight categories (assuming a compatible firmness level is chosen), and provides relief for hot sleepers. Bear has more appeal for couples, people looking for relief from back pain, or those who change positions throughout their sleep cycle. Stomach sleepers may be better suited for the firmer Leesa mattress models, while heavier sleepers may find the Bear mattress more supportive.

Mattress Pricing

These mattresses are both on the pricier side, but the Leesa has a higher price point than the Bear. Leesa tends to focus on luxury materials and construction and carries more expensive models overall, while Bear offers a range of options to accommodate different budgets.

What Customers Are Saying

Both the Leesa and Bear mattresses have strong customer ratings, with sleepers stating that they were satisfied with their purchases in terms of a comfortable night’s sleep and waking up with fewer aches and stiffness. Shoppers who slept on both mattresses also found that each bed struck a good balance of support and comfort.

For the Leesa Sapira Chill, the keyword is comfort. Reviews describe its “hotel-like” feel, and hot sleepers are grateful for the relief of sleeping through the night without overheating. Some customers say that the edge support could be better, resulting in less usable surface area. A few heavier sleepers also pointed out that they didn’t feel the support was adequate.

Bear Elite Hybrid reviewers were mostly happy with the mattress’ support, pressure relief, and responsiveness. They mentioned being able to easily change positions and felt there was the right amount of cushioning for their joints to feel supported but still comfortable. Back pain sufferers also mentioned how the mattress improved their sleep quality. One downside mentioned is that the “cool” claims don’t live up to the hype, with sleepers noticing some heat retention.
