Full Mattress Review

Both Helix and Leesa mattress brands got their start in 2015 selling “mattress-in-a-box” models, which are rolled, compressed, and shipped to customers’ homes for easy setup. The brands offer similar mattress types, leading many customers to compare them while shopping.

We brought two leading models from these brands into our Seattle test lab to compare and contrast their features. Read on to see how the Helix Midnight Luxe and Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid performed during our tests, and how these results line up with online reviews. We’ll also discuss construction details, size options, prices, and Helix and Leesa customer policies to help you decide which is the best mattress option for you.

Our Testing Team’s Take

Over the past decade, our testing team has evaluated nearly 2,000 mattresses in our Seattle-based Test Lab. Using a proprietary mattress testing methodology, our team rates various mattress features and qualities on a 10-point scale. Hands-on tests incorporate different tools and technologies, including body maps to measure pressure buildup for all three sleep positions, heat guns to track cooling and temperature regulation on the surface, and laser-guided levels to assess motion isolation for couples.

We understand that each sleeper has unique mattress needs. Our team’s members cover a wide range of body types and sleep position preferences to ensure testing results are representative of all sleepers. Once lab testing concludes, we also take mattresses home for weeks at a time to see how they perform in our own bedrooms.

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe and Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid share similar hybrid mattress designs, so they both excel at relieving pressure — especially for side sleepers. However, testing shows that the Midnight Luxe conforms more closely, while the firm and medium firm models of the Sapira Chill Hybrid are a little bouncier. People who want to feel a “hug” from their bed may prefer the Midnight Luxe, while the firmer Sapira Chill Hybrid designs prevent sleepers from feeling like they’re sinking deeply into their mattress.

“I tend to enjoy Helix mattresses, and the Midnight Luxe is no exception. This bed wasn’t too soft or too firm for me as a side sleeper, and it stayed cool for me all night long.”

The Helix Midnight Luxe and medium firm Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid both perform well for side sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more, as well as back sleepers and stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. Sleepers over 230 pounds may also find the firm (7) Sapira Chill Hybrid comfortable, while those under 130 pounds should get the cushioning they need from the medium (5) Sapira Chill Hybrid.

“Switching between my side and back felt smooth on the Sapira Chill, especially with the firmer model. I also stayed cool through the night, which doesn’t always happen for me on mattresses with thick foam layers.”

Helix Midnight Luxe Breakdown

On our 10-point firmness scale, the Helix Midnight Luxe rates as medium firm, or 6 out of 10. This mattress has a 14-inch profile and contains five layers encased in a Tencel pillow-top cover. For an additional fee, you can upgrade to swap in a cooling GlacioTex cover.

The top two comfort layers are made of memory foam. The first layer contains gel intended to keep the mattress cool, while the second has a higher density to cradle the body without sinking too much. Two additional comfort layers are available for an upgrade fee. One is infused with cooling material for extra temperature regulation, while the other is zoned to feel firmer around the midsection and alleviate lower back pain.

A transitional polyfoam layer creates a cushy barrier between the comfort system and support core, which contains 8-inch pocketed coils. The coils are zoned to promote even spinal alignment and reinforced along the perimeter to bolster edge support. A layer of high-density base foam holds the coils in place to stabilize the mattress.

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Breakdown

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is available in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7). All three measure 14 inches thick and contain six individual layers.

The cover is a polyester blend, and the top comfort layer consists of gel-infused polyfoam quilted into the cover. Additional comfort layers of adaptive polyfoam and memory foam provide additional cushioning. These layers are also composed of open-cell foam designed to promote circulation and disperse body heat. A transitional polyfoam layer rounds out the comfort system.

As with the Helix Midnight Luxe, the Sapira Chill Hybrid’s support core contains 8-inch pocketed coils that are zoned to provide targeted support for the lower back and hips. Reinforced perimeter coils also help ensure solid edge support. A 1-inch base layer of high-density polyfoam stabilizes the coils.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

The Helix Midnight Luxe and the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid mattresses are both available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king standard sizes. The Midnight Luxe can also be purchased in short queen and RV king sizes.

Both mattresses have 14-inch profiles. Each weighs more than 100 pounds, so enlisting help when lifting or moving either bed is recommended.

Performance Ratings

Our team found that the Helix Midnight Luxe and Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid both offer solid edge support and excel at relieving pressure throughout the night. The Sapira Chill Hybrid is bouncier and easier to move on, especially with the medium firm and firm models. The Midnight Luxe contours closer to the body — this can hinder movement on the surface, but also promote better alignment and help ensure more pain and pressure relief.

As we saw during hands-on tests, the Helix Midnight Luxe feels comfortable to most side sleepers across different body weights and back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds. The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid comes in multiple firmness levels, so a wider range of sleeper types should be able to find at least one design that feels comfortable and supportive to them — including people who aren’t a good match for the Midnight Luxe.

Mattress Pricing

The Helix Midnight Luxe and Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid are sold at nearly identical prices in each size. This is to be expected from two mattresses that share similar materials and come with comparable shipping and return policies. One notable difference: Leesa ships free to all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, while Helix’s free shipping only extends to the contiguous U.S.

What Customers Are Saying

Both the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid have received thousands of positive reviews online, with customers hailing both models as comfortable luxury hybrids. People often praise the Helix Midnight Luxe for its pressure relief, noting that it reduces discomfort along the spine and provides excellent lumbar support. Reviewers laud the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid for its responsiveness, cooling, and sturdy perimeter.

Although both mattresses receive overwhelmingly positive reviews, they have also received criticisms that may be useful to consider when choosing a mattress. Sleepers who want to sleep “on top” of their mattress feel like they sink too deeply into the Midnight Luxe, while reviews also suggest the Sapira Chill Hybrid might feel too bouncy for people who want to feel “hugged” by their bed. Some sleepers who tend to get hot at night have complained that both mattresses don’t remain as cool as they’d hoped, though most reviewers don’t have an issue with temperature while using either mattress.
