Our Seattle Test Lab is our headquarters for in-depth mattress analysis. In the lab, our team has evaluated more than 2,000 mattresses using the same intensive methodology for finding each model’s strengths and weaknesses. 

Part of that methodology is based on quantifying aspects of mattress performance. With specialized equipment, we measure metrics like surface motion transfer, joint and pressure relief, and mattress temperature.

But our testing doesn’t stop with objective data. Our team members take mattresses home with them for field testing to see how they feel in an actual bedroom environment. We get feedback from testers with different sleep positions and body weights, giving us a wider perspective that informs our mattress reviews and helps you identify the best mattress for your bedroom.

Our Verdict  

For shoppers looking for a hybrid mattress, both the DreamCloud and the Puffy Lux have a lot to offer. They share similar materials and construction, but the Puffy Lux has a firmness level of medium compared to the Dreamcloud’s medium firm, a 5 and 6 on our 10-point firmness scale, respectively. 

Although not huge, that difference in firmness can be a deciding factor for many shoppers. Side sleepers and people who want extra plushness and contouring may feel a bit more comfortable on the Puffy Lux. Back and stomach sleepers and people who only want a gentle hug may get better rest on the DreamCloud.

“As a combination sleeper, I appreciated the ability to get support from the DreamCloud in different sleeping positions. I liked how even though it offered moderate contouring, I never felt like I was sinking into the mattress.”

In our testing, the more pronounced contouring of the Puffy Lux made it better at isolating motion, which can be an important consideration for couples. On the other hand, the DreamCloud felt easier to move on top of and more dependable around the perimeter. In most other categories, the DreamCloud and Puffy Lux had comparable performance ratings.

One issue that distinguishes these two mattresses is price. The DreamCloud costs considerably less than the Puffy Lux, and it also comes with a 365-night sleep trial. For shoppers who prioritize affordability, that may tip the scales toward the DreamCloud.

I’m a big fan of the Puffy Lux. Since I’m a side sleeper, I place a lot of value on the ability to cushion my shoulders and hips, and the Puffy Lux has the right amount of cradling to prevent pain in those areas.

Construction and Materials

Below, you can find a quick breakdown of the different materials and layers that make up the DreamCloud and Puffy Lux mattresses.

DreamCloud Breakdown 

The DreamCloud is 12 inches tall and has a firmness level of medium firm (6), although some sleepers report it feels even a touch firmer than that. 

The top cover of the DreamCloud is made with a quilted Cashmere blend that feels plush and inviting. The bottom cover is made with a grippy texture to keep your mattress from shifting out of place. The exterior also features handles for easier moving.

The interior of the DreamCloud has six layers. The top layer and the third layer are made with gel-infused memory foam. The second and fourth layers are made of polyfoam. These materials work together to cushion the joints and midsection without allowing excess sinkage. The gel-infused foams are designed to limit the amount of heat that builds up in these layers.

The support core of the mattress features pocketed coils that are reinforced around the edges. These coils add bounce and edge support, and they are buttressed by a thin layer of high-density polyfoam at the bottom of the mattress.

Puffy Lux Breakdown 

Like the DreamCloud, the Puffy Lux is 12 inches tall, but it has a slightly softer feel that we rate as medium (5) out of 10. 

A distinguishing feature of the Puffy Lux is its Euro-style pillow-top, which is flush with the rest of the mattress but adds a sense of inviting plushness. The cover is made with a blend of polyester and specialty fibers intended to promote cooler sleep. 

Inside the mattress, the top layer is a half-inch of airy fiber fill, a breathable material that’s designed to help regulate temperature. Beneath that is a half-inch of gel-infused polyfoam and then a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam. These comfort layers conform to the body, offering tailored support to heavier areas while also isolating motion. 

Beneath the comfort system is a 2-inch transitional layer of polyfoam. It helps reinforce the upper layers, limiting sinkage and boosting edge support. The support core includes a 6-inch layer of pocketed coils that rest on a 1-inch polyfoam pad that absorbs noise and vibration.

Mattress Sizing and Weight 

The DreamCloud and Puffy Lux Hybrid have the same height of 12 inches, but the Puffy Lux weighs about 11 pounds more than the DreamCloud. Both mattresses are available in all six standard mattress sizes along with a split king size.

Performance Ratings

Our Test Lab found that these mattresses offer dependable performance in most key categories. For our testers, the DreamCloud was a jack-of-all-trades with a balanced performance that earned solid marks across the board. While it didn’t have top-tier scores in any single category, it rated highest for pressure relief. 

The Puffy Lux scored even higher for pressure relief and isolating motion, results that come from the slightly softer feel with more contouring from the memory foam layers. However, these characteristics also translated to a below-average score for ease of movement. 

We found that the DreamCloud was most supportive and comfortable to side and back sleepers up to 230 pounds and to stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. With its softer feel, the Puffy Lux was even better than the DreamCloud for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, but it was less supportive for many back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and people over 230 pounds.
