Our Testing Team’s Take

Before reaching a verdict about any mattress, we put it through a series of hands-on evaluations in our Seattle Test Lab. 

We measure everything from temperature control using a heat gun and thermometer to pressure relief using body-mapping pads. Once we’ve finished our lab testing sessions, field testers take the beds home and try them out in the comfort of their own bedrooms. The testing team represents a wide range of body types and sleep position preferences because the best mattress for one person might not work for someone else, and we want our recommendations to be inclusive of all sleepers.

It’s rare for a mattress to shine in every single category, but by analyzing the data across the different metrics and the various experiences of our sleep team, we can form an idea of which types of people are best suited to a given model.

Our Verdict  

The CopperFlex Pro Hybrid and the Premier Hybrid have similar price-points and builds. Both models feature memory foam and polyfoam over pocketed steel coils, and they scored nearly identical ratings for factors that drive mattress comfort. The most salient difference between the two is that the Nectar is a little firmer, so it provides more support for back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds.

Either the Nectar Premier Hybrid or the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid would be a solid choice for side sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds, and back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds. Both beds feel a little too firm for side sleepers under 130 pounds — but at the same time, back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may not receive enough support.

In terms of shipping and return policies, Nectar comes out ahead. Both companies ship free to the contiguous U.S., but Nectar offers a longer sleep trial and free return. For Brooklyn Bedding orders, a fee is applied to all returns.

Both mattresses are hybrids. However, they have a slightly different internal composition that affects the way they feel.

Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid Mattress Breakdown

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid has a high profile, at 14 inches thick. A GlacioTex Cooling Cover with phase change material provides a cool-to-the-touch sleep surface. This is layered against 1.5 inches of quilted cushioning foam.

Next up are a .75-inch layer of gel swirl memory foam designed to draw heat away from the body, and a .75-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam. Together, these memory foam layers provide a slight “hug” to cushion pressure points around the hips and shoulders. 

The transition layer consists of 1 inch of firmer polyfoam plus a .75-inch zoned foam layer for targeted lower back support.

In the support core, 8-inch pocketed coils rest over a .75-inch layer of base foam. The coils are reinforced along the perimeter for a sturdier feel.

Our testers rated the CopperFlex Pro Hybrid a medium firm, or 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Depending on your weight, you may sink into the first few layers of the bed, but the mattress is designed to push back against your body, keep you aloft, and keep the spine aligned for pain and pressure relief.

Nectar Premier Hybrid Mattress Breakdown 

The Nectar Premier Hybrid has a 13-inch profile and a straightforward design, with increasingly denser foam layers from top to bottom and a coil base. 

The mattress is encased in a breathable cover designed to wick away moisture and heat. The comfort system includes 1 inch of memory foam followed by 3 inches of polyfoam, resulting in initial contouring followed by light pushback.

In the support core, 8-inch pocketed coils provide spinal support. Stronger coils around the edges help reduce feelings of roll-off. A thin base layer of high-density foam stabilizes the coils and rounds out the support system.

The Premier Hybrid’s firmness falls at a 7 out of 10, or firm. There’s definitely some cushioning on the surface, but the overall design leaves you feeling like you are lying “on,” rather than “in,” the mattress. Most people won’t sink in too much, and should have little to no trouble changing sleep positions.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both mattresses come in the six standard sizes, and the Nectar is also available in a split king geared toward couples with adjustable bed bases. These mattresses have thicker profiles, so keep in mind you’ll probably need to purchase a bedding set with a deep-pocket fitted sheet if you don’t already own one.

Performance Ratings 

Both mattresses earned similar performance ratings during our tests. Memory foam hybrids are designed to capture the pressure relief and motion isolation of a foam bed, along with the support and bounce of a coil bed. They tend to provide solid all-round performance, and these two mattresses were no exception. 

Thanks to the actively cooling cover, our testers found the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid was less likely to trap heat. The CopperFlex Pro also scored marginally higher on ease of movement and edge support. In turn, the Nectar Premier Hybrid was better at absorbing movements to prevent them traveling across the bed.

When choosing your mattress, you should consider what features are most important to you.

As is the norm with mattresses bought online, the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid and Nectar Premier Hybrid both ship free to the contiguous U.S. Nectar has a significantly longer sleep trial and offers White Glove delivery for an additional fee, which may be the deciding factor if you have limited mobility, and simply don’t want to set up a heavy mattress on your own. What Customers Are Saying

For the most part, shoppers who bought the Nectar Premier Hybrid found it comfortable, supportive, and responsive. Many were pleasantly surprised by the lower back support, saying the mattress helped ease their shoulder and back pain. Couples slept peacefully with minimal motion transfer from their partners. However, some people in warm climates said the bed retained heat.

The CopperFlex Pro Hybrid also received positive reviews for relieving chronic pain and backaches, and people seemed happier with the temperature regulation on this mattress. While couples acknowledged that the firmness provided a good neutral feel for both parties, there was some motion transfer reported. Sleepers over 230 pounds found the comfort system too thin, allowing them to come into contact with the coils.

Both beds received some negative reviews regarding firmness, with some people finding the mattresses too firm and others finding them too soft. This just goes to show that mattress comfort is highly subjective ,and can vary depending on a person’s body type and sleeping position.
