If you’re looking for a deeply contouring all-foam mattress, you may have come across the Nectar Classic and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt during your search. The Classic is Nectar’s flagship mattress, while the TEMPUR-Adapt is part of Tempur-Pedic’s upgraded collection.

Tempur-Pedic was founded in 1992 by a manufacturer that made foams for NASA, and the brand pioneered the use of memory foam in mattresses. Nectar came on the scene in 2017 as a popular mattress-in-a-box brand.

While the Nectar Classic and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt have an obvious difference in price, differences in performance may be less easy to identify. We brought both mattresses into our Seattle-based Test Lab for hands-on evaluations, compared both companies’ policies, and combed through online customer reviews – all to help you choose more easily between them.

Our Testing Team’s Take

Our testing team employs a unique testing methodology to evaluate each mattress’ performance and quality. We have a decked out Test Lab in Seattle, Washington, full of high-tech tools that measure how well each mattress disperses heat, absorbs motion, and reduces pressure buildup. We then use these measurements to help calculate our mattress ratings.

In addition to objective tests, we have a testing team member take each mattress home with them and sleep on it for several nights. Their subjective assessments of each bed’s comfort also inform our ratings. Because our testing team members are diverse in terms of body type and sleep position preferences, their opinions can help a wide range of people identify the best mattress for them.

Our Verdict

The Nectar Classic and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt are all-foam mattress models with similar materials and designs. The most obvious differences between them are their prices and firmness levels. Shoppers on a budget should consider the Nectar Classic, which costs about one-third of the price of the TEMPUR-Adapt. Those who are willing to pay more for foams used by NASA and known to last a long time will prefer the TEMPUR-Adapt.

“When I first brought the Nectar home, I was pleasantly surprised by how firm and supportive it felt. Despite the memory foam feel, I still found it relatively easy to move around and didn’t get the ‘stuck feeling’ I often get with beds of this type. I did wake up feeling a bit hot one of the nights, but this isn’t abnormal during the summer, when I tested it.”

Both beds work well for side sleepers regardless of their body weight. As a medium firm (6) mattress, the Nectar Classic can support a wider range of back and stomach sleepers than the medium (5) TEMPUR-Adapt can. That said, back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds often find comfort and adequate support on the TEMPUR-Adapt.

Because of their similar materials, both beds excel at pressure relief and motion isolation. For the same reason, both have also received below-average scores in temperature control and ease of movement. Sleepers who tend to sleep exceptionally hot may want to opt for a hybrid or latex mattress instead of an all-foam model.

Construction and Materials

As all-foam mattresses, the Nectar Classic and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt share similar constructions and materials. The primary difference between them is that their transitional layers are made of different types of foam.

Nectar Classic Breakdown

The Nectar Classic has a 12-inch profile and rates as medium firm, or 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This mattress contains three individual layers encased in a cover made from a blend of polyester and polyethylene fibers that promote cooling.

Beneath the cover, there’s a 1-inch memory foam comfort layer. This layer “hugs” the body and contributes to pressure relief. It’s also been infused with cooling gel meant to reduce heat buildup. Beneath the comfort layer, there’s a 3-inch transitional layer made of polyfoam. This layer adds both cushioning and pushback, keeping sleepers from sinking down to the support core.

The Nectar Classic’s support core is an 8-inch layer of polyfoam. This layer adds stability to the bed. All foam layers in the Classic are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating they’ve been tested for and cleared of potentially harmful substances like heavy metals. While the top of the mattress’ cover is soft, the cover surrounding the lower sides and bottom of the mattress is heavy duty – this helps extend the bed’s lifespan and prevent its base from shifting.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Breakdown

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt has an 11-inch profile and measures medium (5) in firmness. Like the Nectar Classic, the TEMPUR-Adapt contains three layers. The cover is a stretch polyester designed to promote cooling on the surface.

Beneath the cover, there’s a 1.6-inch comfort layer of TEMPUR material, Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam. This layer contours closely, “hugging” sleepers and responding to both movement and body heat. Beneath it is a second 1.6-inch transitional layer of TEMPUR material. This layer is denser than the one above it, providing a mix of comfort and support.

The support core in the TEMPUR-Adapt is made of polyfoam. This layer also contributes to the bed’s durability. As with the Nectar Classic, all foams in the TEMPUR-Adapt have received CertiPUR-US certification.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

The Nectar Classic and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt are both sold in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king sizes. The TEMPUR-Adapt is also available in a split California king size.

The mattresses share similar profiles, and both are compatible with standard fitted sheets. The Nectar Classic weighs about 10 pounds more than the TEMPUR-Adapt, but most people will want to enlist the help of someone else when lifting either bed to avoid injury.

Performance Ratings

Like many all-foam mattresses, the Nectar Classic and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt perform best in the realms of pressure relief and motion isolation. Foam, particularly memory foam, is known for relieving pressure, which can be very important to people who experience pain. Foam also tends to absorb motion, so couples who share a bed are less likely to be disturbed by each other’s movements at night.

Both the Nectar Classic and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt score below average on temperature control and ease of movement, which is also common for all-foam beds. Foam tends to retain body heat. Because foam conforms closely to the body, some sleepers might feel like it hinders their ability to change positions or get in and out of bed compared to springier models, including most latex or hybrid mattresses.

Both mattresses perform well with side sleepers of virtually all body weights. The Nectar Classic also earned favorable ratings from most back sleepers on our testing team, while the TEMPUR-Adapt only offered adequate support for our back sleepers under 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds may feel adequately supported on the Nectar Classic, but those outside of that range probably want to select a different mattress. Stomach sleepers across most weight groups will probably find the TEMPUR-Adapt too soft.

In general, all-foam mattresses tend to cost less than latex, hybrid, and airbed models. This difference is due to the price of materials. Synthetic foam costs less to manufacture than natural latex, the steel in coils, and the technology in airbeds.

On the spectrum of all-foam mattress prices, the Nectar Classic has a below-average price while the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt carries a luxury price tag. 

There are differences in the companies’ policies. Nectar offers a longer sleep trial and warranty period, along with standard ground shipping. Tempur-Pedic offers free White Glove Delivery and old mattress removal in the contiguous U.S., but the company’s trial is shorter and delivery isn’t available outside the contiguous U.S.

Both the Nectar Classic and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt have overwhelmingly positive ratings and reviews online. On the Tempur-Pedic website, over 10,000 customers have reviewed the TEMPUR-Adapt. On the Nectar website, over 50,000 customers have reviewed the Classic. People often praise the Nectar Classic for the comfort it provides and the value it provides given its relatively low cost.
