Our Testing Team’s Take

Our Seattle Test Lab team members assess each mattress model with a series of hands-on tests based on our proprietary research methodology. This comprehensive analysis includes both qualitative observations on how the mattress feels and quantitative measurements of pressure relief, heat retention, and motion transfer.

To better understand how a mattress will perform in the real world, testers take mattresses home for bedroom testing. Our team consists of people who represent a wide range of body types and sleep position preferences, so our results are inclusive of most sleepers.

Our Verdict

While the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress have similar hybrid designs with memory foam comfort layers and pocketed coil support cores, their performances varied during hands-on tests.

The Helix Midnight Luxe has a medium firm (6) feel, making it especially well suited to side and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. While this model displayed excellent pressure relief and motion isolation, the hug of thick memory foam may feel restrictive to some sleepers.

“What Helix gets so spot on is in their understanding that comfort is not universal, mattress firmness is personal. Outside of being tailored to your preferences and needs, I think the Helix beds are really well-rounded — they do so many things well from a quality support system, pressure relieving comfort layers that also don’t lead to heat buildup.”

In contrast, the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress comes in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8). Performance depends on which firmness you choose.

For the medium and medium firm options, pressure relief and motion isolation are standout traits. However, the ease of movement is limited due to the foam’s deeper contour. The firm design earns higher marks for edge support, ease of motion, and temperature regulation. Its stable support is a good fit for many back and stomach sleepers, but its bouncy feel can contribute to motion transfer.

“While some mattresses with memory foam feel too soft to me, that wasn’t an issue with the Bear Elite Hybrid. It kept my lower back supported, letting me settle in for quality sleep.”

Helix Midnight Luxe Breakdown

The Helix Midnight Luxe has a medium firm (6) feel, putting it right in the range most side sleepers prefer. The model measures 14 inches thick, allowing space for a generous comfort system and ample support.

A Tencel pillow-top covers the mattress for breathable softness. You can choose an optional upgrade to swap in a GlacioTex cover engineered for constant cooling and heat dissipation.

Two layers of memory foam make up the comfort system, redistributing weight to relieve pressure. An optional layer with heat-transferring graphite bands is also available for an additional charge.

The polyfoam transition layer below the memory foam is intended to minimize sagging around the midsection that could otherwise contribute to lower back discomfort. An optional second transitional layer is zoned to help side sleepers maintain better posture.

The support core uses pocketed coils that are zoned under the torso and hips to promote spinal alignment, and reinforced along the perimeter to protect the edges from deep sinkage. A base layer of high-density polyfoam helps to stabilize the coils.

Bear Elite Hybrid Breakdown

The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three firmness options suitable for different body types and position preferences. These include medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8). Like the Helix Midnight Luxe, each Bear Elite Hybrid measures 14 inches thick.

This model starts with a quilted cover. An optional cover upgrade incorporates a Celliant fabric engineered to promote physical recovery and temperature regulation.

A memory foam comfort layer cradles the body, and a copper infusion in the foam is intended to wick away heat while inhibiting microbial growth. Meanwhile, a polyfoam transition layer deepens the contouring.

The mattress’ pocketed coil core incorporates five firmness zones laid out for targeted spinal support and pressure relief. A reinforced perimeter helps the surface stay supportive along the edges, and a high-density polyfoam base supports the coil system.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid come in the standard mattress sizes, including twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The Helix Midnight Luxe also comes in short queen and RV king sizes, and the Bear Elite Hybrid is available in a split king option for couples who use adjustable beds.

The Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid are nearly identical in profile and weight. At around 14 inches thick, they are both considered high-profile models and require a deep-pocket fitted sheet.

Performance Ratings

To compare the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid head to head, we assigned values based on how they performed in our lab-based testing. While both earned solid marks in all our performance categories, the Helix Midnight Luxe garnered higher ratings across the board.

The Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid both excel at motion isolation and pressure relief, but the Helix Midnight Luxe’s thicker, two-layer comfort system is better at redistributing pressure and absorbing vibrations without restricting movement or trapping excessive heat. The Helix Midnight Luxe also has an exceptionally stable edge that our testers could sit and lie on without much instability.

That said, the Bear Elite Hybrid stands out for its three firmness options, which may make it closer to ideal for sleepers looking for a slightly softer or firmer feel than the medium firm Helix Midnight Luxe. In particular, our stomach sleeping testers under under 130 pounds gave the Bear Elite Hybrid’s firm (8) version higher marks than the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Mattress Pricing

The Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid fall into a similar price range. While the Helix Midnight Luxe costs a bit less for twin and twin XL sizes, the Bear Elite Hybrid is more budget-friendly for full, queen, king, and California king sizes. Both models also have optional model upgrades and bundle add-ons that can increase the cost.
