Full Mattress Review

Titan and Plank mattresses come from the same parent company, Brooklyn Bedding. Founded in 1995, Brooklyn Bedding is a manufacturer that became well-known as a pioneer for the “mattress-in-a-box” model when they began selling mattresses online in 2008.

The Titan Plus Luxe is a hybrid bed that’s marketed towards “plus-sized side sleepers,” while the Plank Firm Luxe is dubbed the “firmest hybrid mattress on the market.” Although these mattresses tend to attract similar sleepers at first glance, there are major differences, especially in preferences and needs.

Read on to learn how these beds fared in our hands-on testing, what policies accompany them, and what people are saying about them in online reviews.

Our Testing Team’s Take

Our team has tried over 2,000 mattresses in our Seattle-based Test Lab for hands-on performance testing. Each mattress is tested according to our unique research methodology through the use of high-tech tools, then scored across multiple performance categories. Some of these include pressure maps that identify and measure the intensity of pressure relief, as well as sensors that measure heat buildup and motion transfer across the mattress surface.

In addition to quantitative research, we get the opinions of a variety of people by asking our diverse testing team members to take mattresses home with them for weeks at a time. Our team members then share their experiences, allowing us to better understand how a mattress performs for sleepers of different body weights and sleep position preferences.

Our Verdict

Both sold by Brooklyn Bedding, the Titan Plus Luxe and Plank Firm Luxe share similar prices, hybrid constructions, and policies. The biggest difference between them is firmness, with the Plank Firm Luxe being much firmer than the Titan Plus Luxe. People looking for an ultra-firm mattress that does not conform to the body will prefer the Plank, while those who want a more balanced combination of support and comfort may like the Titan Plus Luxe better.

Although the Titan Plus Luxe and the Plank Firm Luxe are both often described as beds that work well for sleepers in larger bodies, they aren’t equally comfortable for everyone. In testing, we found that they both performed very well for side and back sleepers over 230 pounds. That being said, only the Plank Firm Luxe excelled at supporting stomach sleepers of all body weights, while the Titan is a better choice for side sleepers under 230 pounds.

“I could really feel how well the supporting layers reinforce the memory foam at the top of the Titan Plus Luxe. That allowed me to get plenty of cushioning without sinking into the bed.”

“As someone who spends quite a bit of time sleeping on my back and stomach, I felt really comfortable on the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe. It doesn’t have a lot of cushioning, but it was enough for me.”

Titan Plus Luxe Breakdown

The Titan Plus Luxe is a hybrid mattress that rates 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is considered medium firm. Its 13-inch profile makes space for five layers and the cover. The standard cover is made of a knit material, and an optional GlacioTex cooling cover containing phase change material (PCM) is available for an additional fee.

The comfort system contains two layers: The top comfort layer is one inch of gel-infused memory foam that has been quilted into the cover. The gel infusion is intended to promote a cooling, cushioned sensation. Beneath it sits a 2-inch layer of TitanFlex polyfoam that helps prevent pressure points from forming. A 1-inch transitional polyfoam layer is next, and that keeps sleepers from sinking into the bed.

Eight inches of pocketed coils make up the bulk of the support core in the Titan Plus Luxe. Coil support cores are known for adding a responsive feel to a bed, while also adding to its cooling properties by allowing for increased airflow. A one-inch layer of polyfoam beneath the coils helps keep them in place.

Plank Firm Luxe Breakdown

Like the Titan Plus Luxe, the Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid mattress with a 13-inch profile. However, this model is double-sided, so it has two firmness ratings (one of each side of the bed) depending on which side of the mattress is facing upwards. One side rates firm, or 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, while the other rates 9 out of 10, which is extra firm. The mattress contains six layers, including a cover. For an additional fee, shoppers can add a GlacioTex cooling cover.

Each side has a slightly different construction. The firm side (7) has two comfort layers: 1.5 inches of quilting and 1 inch of polyfoam. The extra firm side (9) has .75 inches of quilting as a comfort layer. Either way, the comfort layers in the Plank Firm Luxe work to relieve pressure, but unlike comfort layers in most other mattresses, they add very little cushion, which is why the bed feels so firm

Both sides of the mattress have a 2-inch polyfoam transitional layer that provides support while allowing heavier parts of the body to sink into the mattress a bit. Below the transitional layer sits a 6-inch pocketed coil layer, which provides support and offers temperature regulation. Beneath the support core, the transitional layer and comfort layers from the other side of the mattress sit, adding to the bed’s stability.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both the Titan Plus Luxe and the Plank Firm Luxe are available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, short queen, king, California king, split California king, and RV king sizes. The Plank Firm Luxe is also available in Olympic queen, short king, and split California king sizes.

The Titan Plus Luxe and Plank Firm Luxe are both high-profile mattresses, so they require deep-pocket fitted sheets. Regular fitted sheets may not fit or may slip off corners easily. Both mattresses weigh around 100 pounds, so it’s recommended to lift or move them with another person.

Performance Ratings

The performance differences between the Titan Plus Luxe and the Plank Firm Luxe largely stem from their differences in firmness. Like many firm mattresses, the Plank Firm Luxe is very easy to move around on, has excellent temperature control, and provides strong edge support. While the Titan Plus Luxe scores above-average in these areas, it contains memory foam, which can retain a bit of body heat and conform to the body in a way that inhibits movement on the bed’s surface.

In terms of motion isolation and pressure relief, the Titan Plus Luxe performs better than the Plank Firm Luxe, also due to its inclusion of memory foam. Memory foam tends to absorb motion, so movement doesn’t travel across the mattress when a bed partner rolls over or gets in or out of bed at night. A softer bed provides more cushion, which relieves pressure on the joints. In testing, the mattresses received equal scores in terms of durability, and are both projected to be fairly long-lasting mattresses.

Mattress Pricing

The Titan Plus Luxe and Plank Firm Luxe have nearly identical price tags. The similarities in price are largely due to the mattresses having the same profile thickness and, because they are both hybrid models, containing similar materials. Because they are manufactured by the same parent company, their construction processes are likely also similar. Finally, these mattresses come with identical policies regarding sleep trial, warranty, and shipping.

What Customers Are Saying

Customers praise both the Titan Plus Luxe and the Plank Firm Luxe, but for different reasons. The Titan is often lauded for providing durable support to sleepers in larger bodies without feeling overly firm and still managing to alleviate pain in common pressure points (hips, shoulders, lower back, and neck).

The Plank is celebrated by sleepers who want an exceptionally firm mattress and have felt frustrated by how many models on the market contain conforming memory foam. The Titan is appreciated by side sleepers, while back and stomach sleepers seem more likely to enjoy the Plank Firm Luxe mattress.

When it comes to critical reviews, some shoppers have found that the Titan Plus Luxe has a slick cover, causing the sheets to slide off. Some people in bigger bodies also express frustration at the Titan’s perceived softness, noting that something firmer is required to support them. Conversely, some sleepers complain that the Plank Firm Luxe is too firm and causes pain, while others are bothered that it softens with time.
