We’ve been testing mattresses for over a decade in our Seattle lab. We’re at over 2,000 and counting. Here’s what we thought about the Helix Midnight Luxe and Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe.

Our Verdict  

The Helix Midnight Luxe and Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe are similar mattresses, and they both performed excellently  in our sleep lab. You’ll pay a few hundred dollars more for the Helix, but if you watch sales and buy strategically, you can get both beds for about the same price. 

The Midnight Luxe is made for side sleepers, and it does its job well. The Aurora Luxe also ranked well with side sleepers, while back sleepers will probably sleep comfortably on either bed, too. However, stomach sleepers may want something with less memory foam.

“The Midnight Luxe is designed especially with side sleepers in mind, and I could feel it every step of the way. As a side sleeper, my hips and shoulders are always digging into the mattress, so they need that combo of cushioning and support. The Aurora Luxe comes in three firmness options (medium soft, medium firm, and firm) compared to the Midnight Luxe’s medium firm feel. That said, Helix’s Luxe line includes a range of beds with a variety of firmness options that are both harder and softer than the Midnight Luxe. Both companies have solid reputations and lengthy sleep trials of 120 nights, so you can rely on their promise to switch firmnesses if something isn’t quite right.

“I’ve slept on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora for over five years now, and continue to be pleased. The bed’s surface is deceptively plush, but the soft top layer gives way to a more supportive layer below. Bottom line? When it comes to firmness and feel, these are both excellent beds for side and back sleepers. If you want enhanced optional upgrades and a slightly cooler feel, go for the Midnight Luxe. If you want pressure relief with optimal spinal alignment, you may like the Aurora Luxe more.

Helix Midnight Luxe Breakdown 

The Helix Midnight is a medium firm mattress that’s a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. It’s specifically made for side sleepers and constructed to strike the perfect balance between soft and firm. 

The standard cover is made from Tencel fabric that’s breathable and soft. You can upgrade to Helix’s GlacioTex cooling cover for an additional charge, which has phase change material (PCM) that’s meant to draw heat away from the bed’s surface to keep you cool. 

The comfort system begins with two layers of memory foam that adapts to your body’s shape to alleviate pressure points. The gel-infused upper layer feels cool to the touch, and the transitional polyfoam layer gives the bed a more responsive feel without sacrificing temperature regulation. 

The support core is made from 8 inches of pocketed coils that are zoned for comfort and support. The coils are higher-gauge metal around the perimeter and middle third of the bed, so there’s extra strength beneath your pressure points and at the sides of the bed. At the base, there’s a thin layer of polyfoam securing and anchoring the layers above. 

Helix offers two optional layers you can add to your mattress: The first is CoolForce material that sits between the memory foam layers. It’s made from graphite ribbons that aim to pull heat from your body; another great add-on for warm sleepers. You can also add the ErgoAlign contour layer, which is a firm placed under the hips to offer more back support. It rests between the comfort system and transitional layer. 

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Breakdown 

The Aurora Luxe is a hybrid mattress that comes in three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7). There are some differences between the three options, but they generally all have the same construction. 

First, there’s a GlacioTex cooling cover with PCM fibers woven in that help keep the surface cool. Foam is quilted directly into the cover to make it feel plush. The first comfort layer is 1.5 inches of copper-infused polyfoam that’s formulated to feel more responsive than traditional foam. A 1-inch layer of memory foam adds cushioning and pressure relief to ease sore spots. 

The transitional layer is crafted from Brooklyn Bedding’s proprietary foam, Variflex. It provides further contouring while keeping your body supported enough to prevent the sinking feeling that can sometimes accompany thick foam comfort systems. 

8 inches of pocketed coils give the mattress its strong support. The coils are divided into three zones that give your midsection a spine-supporting boost. The coils are reinforced at the sides to increase edge support, followed by its final layer of .75 inches of polyfoam, which helps to improve stability and durability.

Mattress Sizing and Weight 

Size-wise, the Aurora Luxe and Midnight Luxe are comparable. The Midnight Luxe is .75 inches taller and weighs 10 pounds more than the Aurora Luxe. That said, neither of these mattresses are particularly lightweight. You’ll definitely need a partner to help move and unbox either bed. 

They’re both within the average height range for most mattresses. You shouldn’t need any deep-pocket sheets, meaning standard sets will fit either bed. The Aurora Luxe is also available in a wide range of sizes: There are 9 options in total, including harder-to-find sizes like split California king, short queen, and RV king. Meanwhile, the Midnight Luxe comes in 8 options – all the standard sizes as well as short queen and RV king.

Performance Ratings 

The Helix Midnight Luxe comes in one firmness level, while the Aurora Luxe is available in three. The Aurora’s mid-firmness option is most like the Midnight Luxe’s medium firm feel. 

Both beds are exceptional choices for side sleepers of all weights, but our testers between 130 and 230 pounds reported the highest scores. Back sleepers in the same weight range also gave both mattresses exceptional scores. Stomach sleepers will most likely prefer the Aurora’s firm option over either medium firm model. 

The Midnight has slightly better edge support than the Aurora, though both have enough structure at the sides for the majority of sleepers. People who experience pain at common pressure points (the lower back, hips, neck, or shoulders) will be happy on either bed – our testers gave them both nearly perfect pressure relief scores. The Midnight Luxe has a slight edge over the Aurora, but not by much. 

They’re very similar in terms of temperature control as well. They both sleep cooler than average but very hot sleepers may notice some heat retention. Where they differ the most is motion isolation. The medium firm (6) options trap movement effectively, but the Aurora Luxe firm (7) model was too bouncy for some of our testers who wake easily with movement.

Mattress Pricing 

As the names imply, both beds are luxe models with price-points that reflect their top-notch quality. They are at the top end of Helix and Brooklyn Bedding’s product lines – there are more affordable options from each manufacturer. However, after testing, they’re a worthwhile value, especially if you’re willing to spend a bit more for durability and a mattress packed with features.

Without sales, you’ll pay a few hundred dollars more for the Midnight Luxe than the Aurora Luxe. However, if you add the Aurora’s optional pillow-top, they’re on par with one another. Hybrid mattresses often cost between $1,000 and $2,000 for a queen. These beds are both at the upper end of that range. 

One thing to keep in mind is that mattresses go on sale often. Timing your purchase with a major U.S. holiday is a great way to save some cash.

What Customers Are Saying

Reviews point to customers liking the Midnight Luxe’s pressure relieving capabilities as well as its plush yet supportive feel. They also report that the zoned support system noticeably reduces back pain. Side sleepers seem to like it the most, with many reporting that their hips and shoulders feel better in the morning. However, some reviewers say that while the Midnight Luxe isn’t an explicitly hot bed, it’s not the best at temperature control. 

Customers who own the Aurora Luxe say that it’s easy to move around on, excelling at motion isolation and edge support. Many also said that they appreciated the choice between firmness options, which let them dial in on the exact right feel for their needs. One of the most common strengths customers mention is that the Aurora Luxe sleeps very cool, even for hot sleepers. However, some shoppers report that it lacks enough cushioning to feel comfortable while side sleeping.
