Beautyrest is a popular and reputable brand from Serta Simmons Bedding. Originally launched by the Simmons Bedding Co. prior to its merger with Serta, the Beautyrest line has been around since the 1920s. Beautyrest’s current mattress offerings include a variety of hybrid and all-foam models.

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One line consists of luxury models similar to the Beautyrest Black Mattresses, but with slightly different constructions and firmness options. The Beautyrest Other Black Hybrid lines include Series Two, Three, Three XCS, Four, and Four XCS, which offer additional features and more profile options.

We brought the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One mattresses into our Seattle Test Lab to see how well they perform. This review explores the results in detail, so you can identify whether a Beautyrest Black Hybrid might be the right mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

Virtually all side sleepers can find a Beautyrest Black Hybrid model that provides the combination of cushioning and support they need. Memory foam comfort layers allow the hips and shoulders to sink in, but not too deeply, so the spine remains aligned.

The ideal firmness level for side sleepers depends on body weight. The Plush model works well for those weighing up 230 pounds. Medium is the safest option, as it provides comfort to virtually all side sleepers, though those who weigh 130 to 230 pounds like it most. The Firm model is ideal for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

The Beautyrest Black Series One Medium and Firm models received above-average ratings from back sleepers across all body weights. These designs provide solid spinal support to alleviate pressure for back sleepers while preventing them from sinking too deeply into their mattress.

The Plush model can support back sleepers under 130 pounds, but isn’t ideal for those who weigh more than that. Lack of support can cause heavier back sleepers to develop pressure points.

Stomach Sleepers

Across the board, stomach sleepers rate the Firm model of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid the highest. This model provides the support that stomach sleepers often find lacking in other mattresses, so they can sleep freely without the midsection sinking into the bed and putting pressure on the back and neck.

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds tend to like both the Plush and Medium models, while those between 130 and 230 also like the Medium, but not as much as the Firm.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5 / 10

Plush: 8.5 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 6.5 / 10

“While sleeping on the Plush model, I wasn’t disturbed by motion from across the bed once.” – Logan

Thanks to abundant memory foam comfort layers, the Plush and Medium models of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One line offer above-average motion isolation. This feature makes the beds helpful for couples who don’t want to disturb each other’s sleep while changing positions or getting in and out of bed.

The Firm design can also isolate some motion. However, this model contains less memory foam in its comfort system than the Plush and Medium models, so some sleepers may feel movement on the bed’s surface.

Pressure Relief

7.5 / 10

Plush: 8.5 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 6.5 / 10

“The Firm model isn’t as pressure-relieving as the others, but it still worked well for my needs since I often sleep on my stomach.” – Mary

Because the Plush and Medium models contain more memory foam, they conform to the body more and provide a deeper “hugging” sensation. As a result, sleepers tend to experience minimal pressure buildup on these models.

The Firm model feels less adaptive, and sleepers are more likely to feel like they’re sleeping “on” rather than “in” the bed’s surface. While this works well for heavier individuals, as well as many stomach and back sleepers, the higher firmness level could lead to inadequate pressure relief for some lighter weight people and side sleepers.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“I slept comfortably on this mattress, but it didn’t feel as cool to the touch as some others I’ve tested.” – Jeremy

Most sleepers find that the Beautyrest Black Hybrid controls temperature well enough to meet their needs.

However, people who sleep hot may only feel comfortable on the Firm model. Although the memory foam comfort layers in the Plush and Medium models are infused with cooling gel, these beds can still absorb some body heat.

Edge Support

8 / 10

Plush: 6 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 8.5 / 10

“The Firm model would make an excellent choice for people who lie near or sit on the edge of the bed frequently.” – Mary

The Medium and Firm Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One beds offer above-average edge support. This could be helpful for people who use the edges for leverage or regularly sit along the perimeter of the bed.

The Plush model, however, rates below-average for edge support because of its softer comfort system. While this won’t bother many sleepers, those who are concerned about a sinking perimeter might want to opt for a firmer model.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Plush: 7 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“I moved around comfortably on the Plush Beautyrest Black Hybrid, but it does feel pretty conforming.” – Logan

A majority of people have no issue rolling over or getting out of bed when sleeping on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One. However, the Plush model conforms to the body more than the others, and sleepers who need a strong surface for leverage to get out of bed may prefer a firmer model, instead.

Durability

7 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 7 / 10

The expected lifespan of these mattresses is about 7 to 8 years, which is on par with the average foam hybrid. As with other multi-firmness models, the Beautyrest Black Series One line’s estimated durability depends on which design you choose. The softer design is likely to develop surface impressions sooner than the Medium and Firm models.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One is available in three firmness options. On our firmness scale, the Plush model rates medium (5), the Medium model measures medium firm (6), and the Firm model rates firm (7). The Plush and Firm models have 12.5-inch profiles, while the Medium model has a 13-inch profile.

All three models feature a Sleep Climate cover made of polyester, which has been designed to promote breathability and stay cool.

Each design contains three foam layers in the comfort system, but the material and order of these layers differ from bed to bed:

  • The Plush model contains two Beautyrest gel memory foam layers above a polyfoam layer.
  • The Medium model contains a polyfoam layer sitting between two gel memory foam layers.
  • The Firm model contains two polyfoam layers above a memory foam layer.

Beneath the comfort system, all three models are the same. They feature Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coils, which are individually wrapped to reduce motion transfer. Beneath the coils, a final polyfoam layer helps keep everything in place.
