Beautyrest is a heritage brand created by Simmons Bedding Co. in the 1920s. Now owned by Serta Simmons Bedding, Beautyrest offers several lines of hybrid mattresses to address a sleeper’s various needs and preferences. We’ve previously reviewed the more affordable Beautyrest Level Two Hybrid, as well as the luxurious Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One line.

This review focuses on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS Mattresses. We brought these mattresses into our Test Lab to measure their performance in terms of pressure relief, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and overall support. We also had our testing team members take the mattresses home to try them in real-world settings. Read on to see what we found, and to identify if the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS could be the mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

Most side sleepers find the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS comfortable. The Medium mode promotes even alignment for side sleepers, allowing the heavier areas of their body to sink into the memory foam a bit, but not too far. The mix of memory foam and polyfoam in the comfort layers excels at relieving pressure, which is an important feature for side sleepers who feel pressure points around their hips and shoulders.

Because the Medium works well for side sleepers of all body weights, this mattress model is attractive to sleepers who share a bed with a partner who sleeps in a different position or has a different body weight. That said, side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds can find even more comfort on the Plush model, and those over 230 pounds may prefer the Firm model’s extra support.

Back Sleepers

The Firm model of the Series Three XCS provides a comfortable sleeping surface for nearly all back sleepers across different body weights. However, back sleepers may also find comfort on the Medium, and those under 130 pounds might even prefer the Plush design. This range of options makes the mattress a good choice for back sleepers who share a bed with a partner who is a different body weight or prefers a different sleep position.

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS works well for back sleepers because of its targeted support beneath the lower back. While softer memory foam contours to the upper body, polyfoam and pocketed coil layers keep the hips from sinking into the mattress too deeply. When hips sink into the mattress too deeply, the lower back can become strained and sore.

Stomach Sleepers

For stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more, the Firm Series Three XCS model is supportive enough to prevent their midsections from sinking in and interfering with spinal alignment. Most stomach sleepers in this weight range won’t find adequate comfort and support on the Plush and Medium models.

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds should find adequate support on any firmness level of this mattress, including the Plush and Medium. On the other hand, stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may want to opt for a different mattress altogether. While the Series Three XCS Firm model can provide average comfort to them, it may not be as comfortable as thinner, more supportive mattresses that contain less foam padding.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5 / 10

Plush: 9.5 / 10

Medium: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“A little more motion transferred across the Firm model compared to the Plush and Medium models, but I didn’t find any of these mattresses bothersome.” – Mary

The Plush Series Three XCS model isolates motion better than most hybrids on the market. Sleepers who opt for this model won’t feel much, if any, movement transfer across the bed. This top-tier motion isolation is useful for couples who share a bed.

The Medium model is also above-average for isolating motion, and most sleepers won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements on it. The Firm model is about average.

Pressure Relief

9 / 10

Plush: 9.5 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“This is a hybrid mattress that works well for people with sharp pressure points. I felt like my weight was evenly distributed while sleeping on this mattress.” – Brad

As with motion isolation, the Plush and Medium models of the Series Three Hybrid XCS excel at pressure relief, while the Firm model rates about average. Sleepers who like the conforming “hug” of memory foam may particularly like the Plush model.

However, buyers should select a firmness level based solely on the feel they prefer. Pressure points can also develop when a person chooses a mattress that is too soft, given their body weight and sleep position preference. All firmness levels of this bed can prevent pressure buildup in the sleepers who are ideal for that type of firmness.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

Plush: 7 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“The Series Three XCS models stayed cool enough for me, but I don’t usually sleep hot. I could see some people finding these mattresses too warm.” – Jeremy

Most sleepers won’t be bothered by heat while sleeping on the Series Three Hybrid XCS, regardless of the firmness level they choose. The Plush, Medium, and Firm models all adequately regulate temperature thanks to open space to promote air circulation within the coil support core.

That said, people who tend to sleep hot may experience some warmth on this model, especially the Plush and Medium options. Although the heat isn’t excessive for most sleepers, the memory foam layers can absorb warmth from the body.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Plush: 6 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

“During edge support tests, the Plush and Medium models compressed a bit beneath my weight. The Firm design is the clear winner for this performance category.” – Brad

The Firm model has above-average edge support thanks to the coil support core’s reinforced perimeter and denser, less adaptive foam layers. A strong perimeter allows for full use of the bed’s surface, and makes the edges strong enough to sit on and use for leverage when getting in and out of bed.

The Plush and Medium models feel weaker along their edges. While they will be adequate for most sleepers, those who need to rely on the edges for mobility may want a mattress with a sturdier perimeter.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7.5 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

“I change positions several times throughout the night and had no trouble doing so on the Firm model.” – Mary

Movement is easiest on the Firm model of the Series Three Hybrid XCS because its comfort layers don’t conform too closely. The Medium model is a close second in terms of ease of moment. With both of these models, the pocketed coils give the mattress a little bounce that can help sleepers roll over or get out of bed.

For the Plush model, ultrasoft memory foam counteracts this bounce. The average sleeper will still be able to roll over or get out of bed when sleeping on this bed, but some combination sleepers may notice excessive sinkage during position changes.

Durability

7.5 / 10

Plush: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 7 / 10

Robust pocketed coils in the Series Three Hybrid XCS provide great overall stability for the mattress. The memory foam layers are likely to show wear first, and we would expect them to begin forming body impressions after about seven years of regular use. That said, the expected lifespan of this mattress is about 7 to 8 years, depending on which firmness you choose.

Each of the three models is encased in a polyester cover. Memory foam sewn to the cover is infused with cooling phase change material, which allows you to enjoy deep contouring and cushioning without too much heat retention.

The comfort system contains five more layers of memory foam and polyfoam. At least two of these layers are composed of ventilated foam, which is hole-punched to promote airflow near the surface.

The support core consists of pocketed coils over high-density base foam. Polyfoam rails surround the edges of the coil layer to boost perimeter support.
