Sleep Number ClimateCool Mattress Review: Test Lab Ratings

Sleep Number is a reputable manufacturer known for producing adjustable mattresses. The ClimateCool and Climate 360 offer sophisticated temperature control options along with customizable firmness.
- Adjustable firmness and cooling
- App tracks your sleep and delivers personalized sleep insights
- Above-average pressure relief
- Elevated price-point
- Not available in twin, twin XL, or full sizes
The ClimateCool and Climate360 by Sleep Number are two of the company’s high-end models. These mattresses offer the adjustable firmness that characterizes the brand, plus an active cooling feature.
On the ClimateCool, each person can cool their side of the bed within a 15-degree range. The Climate360 takes it up a notch by also allowing you to add extra heating to the bed on cold nights.
These mattresses are a great option for couples who struggle with temperature regulation or who have changing firmness needs. TEST LAB RATINGS
How the Sleep Number ClimateCool Scored
Motion Isolation8.0/10
Motion isolation is a strong point of the Sleep Number Climate line. This is largely due to the thick layer of polyfoam, which effectively absorbs movements to stop them traveling across the bed.
Whether on the ClimateCool or the Climate360, couples should experience minimal disruption when the other person moves, making these beds suitable for sensitive sleepers.
Brad Nehring, Product Testing Manager: “I always worry about waking up my partner when I move, but this wasn’t an issue on the ClimateCool Mattress.”
Pressure Relief8.0/10
Most sleepers receive above-average pressure relief from the Sleep Number Climate line.
The comfort system delivers moderate contouring, which helps distribute weight evenly and minimize the risk of pressure points. Below, the adjustable air chambers allow you to personalize your level of support.
Stomach and back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may experience aches and pains from sinking too far into the bed. These sleepers generally prefer a firmer surface.
Jeremy Klein, Product Testing Manager: “As a side sleeper, I appreciate a mattress with cushioning, and this one had plenty. I liked how I was able to adjust the firmness.”
Temperature Control9.0/10
Both the ClimateCool and the Climate360 offer standout temperature control, with our testing process awarding a rare perfect score to the Climate360. This isn’t surprising, given how many cooling features are included in both models.
Most mattresses rely on infused materials like gel or phase change material to reduce heat retention. While they also include gel infusions in the top layer, the ClimateCool and Climate360 take it a step further, with a full-on cooling system in the second layer of the bed that allows for precise temperature adjustments. The system works by actively pulling warm air out of the mattress (or into the mattress, if you choose to use that feature on the Climate360).
In the Climate360, which allows a broader temperature range, our team found the temperature adjustment worked well for both hot and cold sleepers.
Brad Nehring, Product Testing Manager: “I appreciated the ability to set the bed hot or cool. I think that would be really useful if you live in a location with hot summers and cold winters.”
Edge Support6.5/10
With such a thick foam layer and no perimeter reinforcement, the edges of the ClimateCool and Climate360 compress considerably when sitting or lying on the edge of the bed.
Dialing up the firmness in the support core may help reduce the amount of sinkage, but most sleepers will still feel unstable. Since weak edges force sleepers toward the middle of the bed, couples may want to consider purchasing a size up so both people have plenty of room to spread out.
Rachel Grice, Product Content Manager: “I noticed some feelings of roll-off when I moved closer to the perimeter, especially on the Climate360.”
Ease of Movement7.5/10
Our testers reported average ease of movement on these mattresses. The ClimateCool performed slightly better, since it doesn’t have such a thick polyfoam layer.
Ease of movement is prized by combination sleepers, who benefit from being able to regularly change sleeping positions. It’s also important because it allows people with limited mobility not to feel stuck in the bed.
If you value ease of movement, you may find it more comfortable to dial up the firmness settings. This will keep you mostly “on” rather than “in” the bed.
Rachel Grice, Product Content Manager: “These mattresses didn’t have much bounce, though it’s not like I felt stuck in the bed. I liked being able to adjust the firmness when I changed positions.”
Durability7.5/10
We expect the Sleep Number ClimateCool and Climate360 to have an average lifespan of approximately 7 to 8 years.
Usually, the first part of a mattress to break down is the top layer. Although Sleep Number uses high-quality polyfoam, it is on the plusher side and will eventually start to develop body impressions, which can affect its ability to provide pressure relief.
The air chambers themselves should hold up for quite a long time. Also, since the firmness and temperature can be adjusted an infinite number of times, this mattress can accompany you through different stages of life.
The mattresses do contain moving parts, so there is a possibility you may need to replace certain components. These replacements are fully covered under Sleep Number’s warranty for the first 2 years, and partially covered up until year 10.

Who it Fits
Fit by Sleep Position and Body Weight
Sizes, dimensions and weights
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers concentrate the weight of their body on the hips and shoulders, so they require ample cushioning to prevent pressure points at these contact points. Both the ClimateCool and the Climate360 are up to the task, with contouring polyfoam in the comfort system.
Those who weigh more than 230 pounds will find the mattress feels less supportive. These sleepers sink in a little further and may notice a lack of support, which could tug the hips downward and lead to some mild back pain.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers generally do better with a firmer surface. Setting higher settings in the ClimateCool and Climate360 enables sturdy support to maintain healthy spinal alignment. The polyfoam helps cushion the lumbar area to prevent pressure buildup.
As with side sleepers, back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may sink too far into the mattress and receive inadequate support. This is especially true for the Climate360, which has a plusher comfort system.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers weighing up to 130 pounds on our testing team reported satisfactory support from the Sleep Number Climate mattresses, particularly the ClimateCool. However, most testers weighing 130 pounds or more felt these models were too soft.
We generally recommend firmer mattresses for stomach sleepers, in order to avoid excessive sinkage in the midsection that pulls the spine into an uncomfortable U-shape. Even after adjusting these mattresses to their firmest possible settings, the comfort system was still too soft to provide support for this sleeping position.
