At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two is built with a compelling combination of memory foam, microcoils, and sturdy innerspring coils. It offers noticeable contouring and pressure relief along with a zoned design for extra support near common pain points.

Pros
Two layers of memory foam relieve pressure and isolate motion
Sleeper is one of the company’s most popular online offerings. Several Perfect Sleeper product lines are available, including the luxurious Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid collection.
The entry-level Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid is a 13-inch foam-over-coil hybrid available in three firmness levels. For a slightly higher price, you can upgrade to the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two. This mattress is sold in medium (5) and medium firm (6) designs, and is constructed with foam and minicoil comfort layers over a zoned pocketed coil support core.
This review focuses on the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two, which we brought into our Test Lab for a full evaluation. We cover its performance in essential categories like motion isolation and pressure relief, take a close look at how it’s built, and explain which sleepers it works best for.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“I loved how the mattress felt when lying on my side. The memory foam layers contoured around my hips and shoulders, but I didn’t find myself sinking down into the mattress. Both firmness options worked for me, but I would give a slight nod to the medium firm version.”

“The memory foam layers did a good job of cushioning my main pressure points, but I can see why this mattress won’t work for everyone. It may have too much hug and feel too soft, especially for back and stomach sleepers with a higher body weight.”

“Like Jeremy, I had a slight preference for the medium firm model, especially because it was a touch more supportive when lying on my back and stomach. As a hybrid sleeper, I appreciated that there was some springiness from the coils that prevented me from feeling stuck in place.”

Side Sleepers
The side sleepers on our testing team gave strong ratings to the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two. People weighing up to 230 pounds loved the feel of both the medium (5) and medium firm (6) designs, which gently conformed to the body and gave plenty of cushioning to the hips and shoulders.
Some side sleepers over 230 pounds were less enthusiastic about the mattress. While they received sufficient support, many felt that there was too much sinkage, especially on the medium (5) model.
Back Sleepers
During our testing of the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two, ratings from back sleepers were a mixed bag. Back sleepers up to 230 pounds praised the medium firm (6) model, which offered near-ideal support to their midsection.
The model with a medium (5) firmness level got lower ratings from all of our back sleepers, and only those under 130 pounds felt that it was above average at maintaining healthy spinal alignment.
For back sleepers over 230 pounds, neither model felt particularly supportive. While a few testers said that the firmer model provided acceptable support, almost everyone agreed that a more robust mattress with less contouring would be a better match for their needs.
Stomach Sleepers
Our testing found that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two is only well-suited to stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. Among these sleepers, the medium firm (6) model is the most supportive.
For other stomach sleepers, the mattress felt too soft. It allowed their abdomen to sink too deeply into the top layers, which pulled the spine out of alignment and made it more likely to experience uncomfortable sleep.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
8.5
/ 10
Plush: 9 / 10
Medium Firm: 8 / 10
“For a hybrid mattress, the Perfect Sleeper X Level Two was extremely effective at isolating motion. I found that I could stay asleep without noticing movement on the other side of the mattress.” – Jeremy
Our testing team found that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two provided excellent motion isolation, especially on the medium (5) model.
The softer design absorbed motion better than most hybrid mattresses, and this can be attributed to the two memory foam layers and pocketed innerspring coils. These materials cut down on vibrations from movement that might otherwise ripple across the mattress surface.
Strong performance in this category tends to be most important to couples, especially if either bed partner is easily awakened by movement during the night.
Pressure Relief
9
/ 10
Plush: 9.5 / 10
Medium Firm: 8.5 / 10
“I could feel pressure melt away as the memory foam adapted to my body. While others might find there to be too much hug, I found it both comfortable and supportive.” – Rachel
Our testing showed that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two delivers top-notch pressure relief, especially for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.
Memory foam excels at relieving pressure by contouring to match the body’s heavier areas and sharp pressure points. In this mattress, the two layers of memory foam work together to minimize pressure buildup around joints, especially the hips and shoulders of side sleepers.
Both models had excellent performance in this category, but the highest ratings went to the softer model that contours more closely to the body.
Temperature Control
7.5
/ 10
Plush: 6.5 / 10
Medium Firm: 7 / 10
“I can be sensitive to an overheating mattress, but thankfully, I didn’t have major issues on the mattress. It warmed up but didn’t get excessively hot.” – Brad
Based on our testing, the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two is average to slightly above average for maintaining a neutral temperature. Although memory foam can get warm, the gel-infused foam and airflow-permitting coils seemed to have a positive effect for our testers.
The softer medium (5) model hugs the body more tightly, which means it sleeps warmer than the medium firm (6) option. Our results show that either model can work for most people, but hot sleepers may want a mattress without memory foam.
Edge Support
7
/ 10
Plush: 6.5 / 10
Medium Firm: 7 / 10
“Despite some perimeter reinforcements in the support core, I could still feel extra compression of the memory foam around the edges. ” – Rachel
Our edge support assessment found that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two had slightly weaker edges than many competing hybrid mattresses. When lying or sitting near the edge, our testers felt themselves sinking deeply into the memory foam layers. This didn’t make the mattress feel unstable, but it was a concern for people who depend on a sturdy edge (for mobility reasons or for sitting and putting on their shoes).
As expected, the medium (5) model felt softer around the edge, making the medium firm (6) model a better option for those who want a more reliable perimeter.
Ease of Movement
7
/ 10
Plush: 6.5 / 10
Medium Firm: 7.5 / 10
“I sleep on my side and back, and I found that there was some resistance when I wanted to switch positions. It was definitely more challenging on the softer model since it hugged my body more tightly.” – Brad
Our testing team found that ease of movement was significantly different between the two firmness options. Changing sleeping positions on the medium (5) model was more difficult since the softer memory foam closely clings to the body. Because the medium firm (6) model has less sink, our testers said they noticed more bounce from the coils.
Ease of movement is most important to sleepers who move frequently at night, including combination sleepers who regularly shift between sleeping positions.
Durability
7
/ 10
Long-term durability can be hard to assess, especially since some people put a greater strain on their mattress. However, all indications are that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level Two is built in a way that will deliver durability that is comparable to most hybrid mattresses on the market.
We were impressed with the construction of the mattress, but memory foam can start to soften faster than some other materials. After years of nightly use, softening of the foam may affect its overall feel and stability.

The top two layers are made of memory foam, which gives the mattress significant contouring and motion isolation. The second memory foam layer is infused with graphite gel to prevent heat from building up near the surface. The third layer consists of microcoils, which help resist excessive sinkage and give the mattress more bounce. The fourth layer is made with a transitional foam that provides additional cushioning and stability.
The support core includes innerspring coils that are individually wrapped in fabric, giving them the ability to compress independently of the surrounding coils. This decreases motion transfer and enables more targeted support. Zoned reinforcement around the midsection helps keep the entire body on an even plane without extra sinkage beneath the lower back and hips.
