At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.

Zinus is a popular budget-friendly, direct-to-consumer brand that started selling sleep products around 2004. The Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress is one of the company’s higher-tier designs.
Measuring 14 inches thick, this high-profile model incorporates surface materials designed for cooling, multiple memory foam layers, and zoned base polyfoam for targeted lumbar support. Combined with its medium (5) feel, this construction creates a pressure-relieving, motion-isolating surface well suited to side sleepers, people with back pain, and couples.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“The Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam felt plush and conforming. I was most comfortable lying on my side, but I also got enough support on my back and stomach. Changing positions took a little effort because of the bed’s close hug, but not enough to make me feel trapped.”

Side Sleepers
The Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress stands out for side sleepers. Two layers of memory foam help redistribute their body weight, which is particularly important for side sleepers prone to discomfort around their hips and shoulders. Additionally, the zoned polyfoam transition layer adds targeted support for the midsection to promote spinal alignment.
Given the medium (5) feel, this model is a great fit for most side sleepers under 130 pounds, allowing them to sink in without sagging. Many side sleepers between 130 and 230 also enjoy balanced support and contouring, though some over 230 pounds may find the surface too soft.
Back Sleepers
A lot of back sleepers under 230 pounds will appreciate the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam’s blend of softness and support. Two layers of memory foam help cradle a back sleeper’s hips, while the zoned transition layer enhances lumbar support.
During our in-house testing, most back members on our team weighing up to 230 pounds reported feeling comfortable on their backs. Some noted difficulties maintaining good sleep posture due to sinkage around their midsections. Testers over 230 pounds sank too much, and their ratings reflect this lack of sufficient support.
Stomach Sleepers
For stomach sleepers, support is key, and the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress should deliver a comfortable night’s rest for most who use this position and weigh up to 230 pounds. The bed’s close-conforming memory foam adds noticeable softness to the surface, and the zoned transition layer limits sinkage around the midsection to an extent.
With its medium (5) feel, this model is on the softer end of the firmness range that most stomach sleepers prefer. While some testers under 230 pounds felt comfortable, others mentioned sagging around their midsections. Those over 230 pounds experienced this more acutely, with several noting that their spines bent into a U shape, contributing to lumbar discomfort.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
9.5
/ 10
“Even when team members were moving around a lot on the opposite side of the bed, I didn’t notice much motion.” – Brad
While many all-foam models isolate motion well, the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress still outperforms a lot of similarly constructed models. Two memory foam layers respond slowly to pressure changes, preventing most motion from transferring. A polyfoam transition layer and core further absorb movement and prevent it from being felt across the full surface.
Motion isolation is usually one of the top things that couples look for in mattress reviews because it can help prevent unnecessary awakenings when one partner moves during the night.
Pressure Relief
9
/ 10
“This bed’s close hug gives that classic memory foam sensation. I didn’t experience any noticeable pressure buildup around my hips or shoulders.” – Logan
Pressure relief is another one of the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress’ greatest strengths. The medium (5) feel lets the sleeper sink in, while two layers of memory foam respond to heat and weight to mold to their body and redistribute pressure. For side sleepers, this often reduces discomfort around the hips and shoulders.
We used a pressure-mapping pad to visualize the performance, observing even weight distribution across the mattress surface. Team members also noted that they didn’t experience pressure points or hot spots while lying on the mattress.
Temperature Control
6.5
/ 10
“I didn’t overheat, but the surface also didn’t feel especially cool. The temperature control was effective but not remarkable.” – Mary
All-foam models with memory foam generally aren’t known for their temperature control, but the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress performs fairly well comparatively.
Because the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress’ two layers of memory foam are dense and contour closely to the body, heat cannot air out easily. To counteract that, this model incorporates a cover designed to be cool to the touch and a gel infusion engineered to transfer heat away from the body.
Our temperature readings showed that some heat lingered on the surface, but not a lot. Team members also reported maintaining a comfortable temperature over the course of testing.
Edge Support
6
/ 10
“I didn’t feel like I had to stay in the center of the bed, but the perimeter compressed enough that I also wouldn’t sleep along the edges if I could avoid it.” – Brad
The Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress’ edge support was midrange, as we’d expect from most medium (5) all-foam models. Its memory foam and polyfoam compress noticeably when a sleeper approaches the edge, particularly if they weigh over 230 pounds.
None of our testing team members reported that the edge felt unstable enough that they feared slipping off, but they also didn’t feel secure enough to use it extensively.
Ease of Movement
6
/ 10
“Changing positions took some effort, but not enough to limit my movement to a significant extent.” – Mary
Due to its plush feel and close conforming, the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress does not facilitate movement. Sleepers can sink fairly deeply into the medium (5) surface. Additionally, the memory foam doesn’t regain its shape instantly when they move, so there may be a lingering impression.
While our testers observed some challenges shifting and moving across the surface, they did not report that it meaningfully interfered with their sleep or overall comfort.
Durability
6.5
/ 10
“Based on its design, I’d think the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress should last 6 to 7 years — around average for a foam bed.” – Logan
Based on its design, we’d expect the Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress to have an average life expectancy of around 6 to 7 years, which is similar to other all-foam models. Memory foam can degrade or form lasting impressions over time, which may ultimately impact the comfort.
The Zinus Lumbar+ Premium Memory Foam Mattress is a medium (5) all-foam mattress that measures 14 inches thick.

A polyester cover designed to feel cool to the touch wraps around the exterior of the mattress. Inside, the top comfort layer consists of memory foam that adjusts to the sleeper’s shape in response to heat and weight for cradling and pressure relief. A gel infusion in this layer is intended to pull warmth away from the body and keep the surface a more neutral temperature. Underneath, a second layer of memory foam enhances the contouring effect.
Next, the mattress includes a zoned polyfoam transition layer. This creates a smoother transition from the soft comfort system to the firmer core, while adding more targeted support around the center of the bed to help with posture.
A final base layer of high-density polyfoam adds stability and support.
Size availability for the Zinus Lumbar+ varies by seller. That said, size selection for the mattress is limited across the board. Amazon buyers can choose from queen and king sizes.

Normal wear and tear, like an increase in softness or slowing of recovery time, is not covered.
This policy applies only to the original purchaser, and the law tags must remain attached. The mattress must also be used on a proper base and protected with a stain-resistant pad to qualify for coverage. Additionally, it must remain in sanitary condition and free from abuse or misuse, and it cannot be used with an electric blanket or heating pad.
