At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.

Side Sleepers
During our tests, side sleepers of all body weights received sufficient support from the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux. They could feel the foam layer cradle their hips and shoulders, cushioning these sharp pressure points and promoting healthy spinal alignment.
The strongest ratings came from side sleepers under 130 pounds, followed closely by those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. Some side sleepers over 230 pounds felt that there was too much contouring, even if they turned up the firmness level.
Back Sleepers
The ComfortNext Lux delivers solid support to back sleepers up to 230 pounds. Our tests show the mattress is particularly well suited to those under 130 pounds. Back sleepers generally get the most support from a firm sleeping surface, but they also need cushioning that accommodates the curvature of the lumbar spine.
Our testers said that the foam layer was effective at relieving pressure in the lower back, and they were able to dynamically adjust the firmness level to keep from sinking too deeply into the bed. However, back sleepers over 230 pounds found that sinkage into the foam was excessive even after increasing the firmness by adjusting the air chambers.
Stomach Sleepers
During our testing, stomach sleepers under 130 pounds said they received good support from the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux Mattress. But those weighing 130 pounds or more gave the mattress considerably lower marks for support.
Stomach sleepers typically need a firm mattress so they can rest with their body in a flat plane. If their stomach pushes down into the mattress, it can pull the spine into a U-shape that leads to aches and pains.
Even though the ComfortNext Lux has an adjustable firmness level, stomach-sleeping testers who weigh at least 130 pounds said that the mattress felt too soft because of how much the top layer contours to the body.

Our testers found that motion isolation was one of the strengths of the ComfortNext Lux. The thick top layer of conforming polyfoam kept vibrations from rippling across the mattress surface. That allowed our testers to sleep without disturbance when their partner was getting in or out of bed or moving around at night.
Strong motion isolation makes the ComfortNext Lux a good fit for couples, especially since the mattress also allows each person to set the firmness level for their side of the mattress.
Pressure Relief

The ComfortNext Lux earned a standout rating for pressure relief in our test lab. Our team loved how the foam gently enveloped sharp pressure points, especially the hips and shoulders of side sleepers.
Most of our testers also appreciated being able to modify the firmness level, which helped them find the right balance of comfort, support, and pressure relief. However, some back and stomach sleepers felt that there was too much conforming, which made the mattress less aligned with their sleep needs.
Temperature Control

Because of how it conforms to the body, the foam in the ComfortNext Lux can make it harder for air to flow over the skin at night. This may result in some heat getting trapped, but most of our testers found the mattress maintained a reasonably cool temperature.
Sleep Number designed the ComfortNext Lux with cooling features intended to promote airflow through the foam and microcoils. The air chambers themselves also resist heat buildup.
Our results suggest that most sleepers will stay at a comfortable temperature on the ComfortNext Lux, but hot sleepers may prefer a mattress with less contouring.
Edge Support

“I didn’t love the experience of sitting on the edge of the ComfortNext Lux to put on my shoes. The edge is clearly the weakest point and feels decidedly less robust than the rest of the mattress surface.” – Jeremy
Edge support was the weakest aspect of the ComfortNext Lux’s performance during our tests. The 3.5-inch foam layer compresses significantly around the perimeter, and the underlying materials provide little reinforcement.
Our testers didn’t find themselves rolling out of bed, but they did say they could feel more sinkage when sitting or lying close to the perimeter. While this may not be a concern for many sleepers, it can be an issue for those with a higher body weight or physical mobility limitations.

The downside of the ComfortNext Lux having an adaptive foam top layer is that it can be challenging to move on the mattress surface. This effect is amplified if you decrease the firmness level to make the mattress softer.
To give the mattress a bit of bounce, Sleep Number included 1.5 inches of microcoils within the second foam layer. However, our testing found that the thicker top layer blunted much of the springiness of the microcoils.
Durability

The ComfortNext Lux includes an impressive mix of materials. Along with adjustable air chambers, the mattress includes high-quality foams and well-designed microcoils.
Given these materials, we expect this mattress to have a long lifespan. However, compared to beds without air chambers or pumps, the ComfortNext Lux has more parts that can break down and fail. While you can typically fix any problems with replacement parts, these repairs may add to the long-term maintenance cost of the mattress.
Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux Mattress Review Breakdown
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux Mattress is 13 inches tall and includes interior layers of foam, microcoils, and adjustable air chambers.
The top layer of the mattress contains 3.5 inches of polyfoam. This material has characteristics similar to memory foam, including significant contouring and excellent motion isolation. This layer is especially helpful for side sleepers seeking relief from sore joints and pressure points.

The second layer consists of 3 inches of polyfoam. Embedded into this foam are 1.5-inch microcoils engineered to give the mattress surface more bounce and pushback. These microcoils also promote airflow close to the mattress surface.
The third layer features Sleep Number’s proprietary air chambers, and you can adjust the firmness (also known as your “Sleep Number”) by adding or removing air from these chambers. This support system includes technology to maintain the firmness level throughout the night, adding or removing air as necessary.
Each side of the mattress has independent chambers that are controlled separately, so bed partners can set the firmness for just their side. You can make firmness adjustments with a smartphone app, and, for an extra charge, you can purchase a remote. The mattress includes sensors to gather sleep data, and the app helps track patterns that could enhance your sleep.
Beneath the air chambers is 1 inch of dense polyfoam for additional sturdiness and stability. The cover of the mattress is made with soft polyester fabric.

Trial, Shipping, and Warranty Policies
Availability
When buying online, Sleep Number only ships the ComfortNext Lux within the contiguous United States.
The mattress is also sold through Sleep Number’s network of brick-and-mortar stores throughout the country. Shoppers in Alaska or Hawaii may be able to find this mattress in retail stores in their area.
Shipping
The ComfortNext Lux comes with free doorstep delivery. After your order is processed, Sleep Number ships the mattress in a box that arrives at your doorstep.
Once the mattress arrives, you need to bring the box to your bedroom and set up the mattress according to Sleep Number’s instructions. This usually requires two people and takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Additional Services
Sleep Number offers two different options for White Glove delivery. The Premium delivery service costs $250 and includes mattress setup. The Ultimate delivery service costs $350 and includes both setup and removal of your old mattress. These fees are non-refundable if you decide to return the mattress.
Sleep Trial
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux comes with a 100-night sleep trial. You are required to keep the mattress for 30 nights as a break-in period. If you decide you want to make a return, you can coordinate with Sleep Number for the mattress to be picked up from your home. A pickup fee of $250 to $350 (depending on your location) will be deducted from your refund.
If you purchase a Sleep Number mattress from a third-party retailer, it may have a different return policy.
Warranty
Sleep Number backs the ComfortNext Lux Mattress with a 15-year limited warranty. The warranty is broken up into two parts.
During the first year, the mattress has a full warranty. If there is a covered defect in materials or manufacturing, Sleep Number will repair or replace the mattress at no cost to you.
After the first year, warranty service has a prorated cost that is calculated based on how long you’ve had the mattress and present-day pricing. In the second year, you are responsible for 35% of the costs of repairing a defect. This amount goes up by 5% every year until reaching 85% in year 11.
