At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.

Raymour & Flanigan is a family-owned company based in the U.S, Northeast that sells a variety of home furniture. In addition to mattresses from renowned third-party brands, R&F also produces its own line with several mattress designs to cater to different sleeper types. We’ll be taking a closer look at the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress, a 14-inch hybrid with a medium soft (4) feel.
This budget-friendly mattress features layers of pressure-relieving foams with a zoned construction intended to boost midsection support and pressure relief for side sleepers. The foam is nestled on a base of pocketed coils with a reinforced perimeter.
Our testing team analyzed the mattress in our Seattle-based Test Lab to see how it stacked up against the competition. We’ll discuss performance metrics, company policies, and real-life sleeper ratings to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.
Logan Foley
Executive Product Director

hot sleeper
“I loved the pressure relief from the Sleep by R&F Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress. The bed cradled my hips and shoulders and I woke up with virtually no pressure points. I am a hot sleeper in general, so I personally wouldn’t choose this bed for long-term use, but it was fine on cooler nights.”
Brad Nehring
Product Testing Manager

partner easily awakened
“I’m a fan of mattresses that muffle movements so my partner can sleep soundly, and this one fits the bill. While I would have preferred a slightly firmer surface, I appreciated the fact that the thick foam layers kept me from hitting the coils.”

back pain
“I found it a little tough to move around on the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress. It wasn’t as bouncy as other hybrids we’ve tested, although I do have to say I slept comfortably on my side, back, and even my stomach for short periods.”

Side Sleepers
The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress is well suited to side sleepers up to 230 pounds. Thanks to its thick cushioning layers, the mattress provides a close “hug” sensation, molding around the hips and shoulders to eliminate pressure buildup.
Side sleepers over 230 pounds may require a mattress with more support. The Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress is softer than average, so it allows sleepers to sink quite far into the bed and may pull the spine out of alignment.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers generally do best with a mid-range bed that’s neither too firm nor too soft. The Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress does the trick for most back sleepers up to 230 pounds. These sleepers receive sufficient support to keep the spine on an even plane, as well as moderate contouring for the lower back.
By contrast, the mattress was too plush for most back sleepers on our team weighing more than 230 pounds. These sleepers didn’t get enough support in the midsection, which can lead to excessive sinkage and back pain.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers typically require an extra-firm surface to maintain healthy posture during sleep. With its soft build, the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress allows weight-bearing areas like the hips to sink further into the bed. This can pull the spine into a U-shape and lead to back pain for many stomach sleepers.
The exception is stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. Since they exert less pressure on the mattress, these sleepers don’t sink in as far and should receive adequate support.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
9.5
/ 10
“I sleep with a partner, so motion isolation is important to me. This mattress absorbed movement exceptionally well — we were barely able to feel anything when the other person changed positions or adjusted their pillow.” – Brad
The Sleep by R&F Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress delivers outstanding motion isolation, especially for a hybrid. Its thick foams contour to the sleeper and absorb movements to prevent motion transfer across the bed.
The pocketed coils add some bounce, but because they move independently of one another, any motion transfer is limited to the immediate area. We expect couples to sleep peacefully and experience minimal disruption when their partner changes position.
Pressure Relief
9.5
/ 10
“As a side sleeper, I’m always looking for a mattress that lets me settle in without those pain points forming at the hips and shoulders. This bed had a nice soft feel that delivered exceptional cushioning. ” – Logan
With its multiple layers of plush foams, the Sleep by R&F Plush Euro Pillowtop provides excellent pressure relief to prevent pressure points from forming, making it a good choice for side and back sleepers up to 230 pounds and people with arthritis or joint pain.
The convoluted egg-crate foam with zoned cutouts provides a softer feel under the hips and shoulders, which are typically the most sensitive areas. In the support core, pocketed coils flex to provide a deeper cradle while keeping the lower back supported.
There’s one caveat: pressure relief goes hand-in-hand with support. If your hips are sinking in too far, you can experience pressure buildup in the back. Sleepers over 230 pounds generally need a firmer bed for optimal pressure relief and may find this model too soft.
Temperature Control
6
/ 10
“I found this mattress slept warmer than many of the other hybrids I’ve tried. The bed hugged my body and made it hard for heat to dissipate, although not to the same extent as an all-foam mattress.” – Mary
During our temperature tests, we found that the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress does an average job of minimizing heat retention.
Polyfoam is known for trapping heat, especially in a mattress like this one that wraps closely around the sleeper. A moisture-wicking cover and gel infusions help to combat heat retention, and the layer of convoluted polyfoam has air pockets for added breathability.
These steps somewhat help mitigate heat buildup, and the coils in the support core allow space for heat to dissipate. However, hot sleepers may want to look for a bed with a thinner comfort system that doesn’t hug the body as closely.
Edge Support
5.5
/ 10
“My partner and I like to spread out and use the whole bed, and we found this a little difficult here as the edges didn’t hold up very well. People who weigh less than 230 pounds should have less trouble, though.” – Brad
The Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress has relatively weak edges for a hybrid due to its soft feel and thick comfort system. Mattresses with weak edges may lead to feelings of roll-off and can make it more difficult to sit along the perimeter of the bed.
The mattress does have coils with a reinforced perimeter in the support system. These help limit compression to the top half of the mattress, helping overcome serious feelings of instability.
Ease of Movement
6
/ 10
“As a combination sleeper, I usually go for a more responsive bed, but I can see the appeal of balancing bounce with pressure relief here.” – Mary
Our team noted that the soft, conforming foam layers of the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress made it somewhat difficult to switch sleeping positions.
Hybrids are usually well suited to combination sleepers because the coils provide pushback. However, the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress has such a thick and adaptive comfort system that the bounce isn’t very noticeable. This means it might not be the right fit for combination sleepers or those with limited mobility.
Durability
6
/ 10
“In my experience, mattresses with thicker comfort systems tend to have a longer usable lifespan, though I’d expect to see some body indentations in the soft foams.” – Logan
Based on the construction of this mattress, we’d estimate that it should last around six years before starting to develop noticeable indentations. This is on the lower end for a hybrid because plusher foams tend to break down faster.
The foams will soften faster in the areas that bear the most weight, which can lead to uneven pressure relief. However, the coils should stand the test of time, and because the comfort system is quite thick, it will offer a buffer to keep sleepers from sinking straight onto the coils.
Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress Review Breakdown
The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Mattress comes in three versions. We will be covering the Plush Euro Pillowtop Mattress, which has the softest design and, at 14 inches, the thickest profile. Due to its above-average height, the mattress may require a deep-pocket fitted sheet.

This bed has a Euro-top design, meaning the top few layers are sewn into the mattress with a visible seam. The cover material is designed to wick moisture away from the surface of the bed.
Under the cover is a layer of foam infused with cooling gel, followed by a plusher foam layer for pressure relief. Egg-crate polyfoam makes up the third layer and features five firmness zones, which are intended to provide extra support for the midsection without feeling too stiff beneath the head and legs.
The last two comfort layers are made of dense transitional polyfoam to create a thin buffer between your body and the support core, which contains pocketed coils. The coils respond to movement with a light bounce, and a reinforced perimeter helps to ensure solid edge support.
The mattress has a medium soft feel, equivalent to a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This is softer than most mattresses, which is great for people who like pressure relief but less optimal for those who need extra support.
