At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.
The aptly named Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress offers dependable support. This extra reinforcement should appeal to most back and stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds.

Side Sleepers
During our tests, the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress received its highest ratings from side sleepers over 230 pounds. These sleepers loved how the support layers prevented them from sinking too deeply into the mattress. At the same time, they could feel deep cushioning around their shoulders and hips.
Side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds also got quality support from this mattress. However, most said they would prefer a mattress with more contouring and less pushback. Similarly, most of our side sleepers under 130 pounds found this mattress to be too firm.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers on our team gave strong ratings to the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress. This model was especially popular among those weighing 130 pounds or more, who appreciated how robust the mattress felt under their midsection. That helped keep their spine in a neutral plane as they slept.
While back sleepers under 130 pounds received adequate support from this mattress, some felt that it was slightly too firm.
Stomach Sleepers
We found that the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress was a hit among stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. These sleepers need a mattress that is firm enough to stay flat and even, but they don’t want to feel like they are sleeping on concrete. Our testers said that this mattress struck a good balance, cushioning the body without losing structural integrity.
Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds and those over 230 pounds also gave strong ratings to the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress. While some said their ideal mattress might be a little bit softer or firmer, they agreed that this mattress was a good fit for their sleep needs.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
“While the vibrations weren’t too bothersome for me, I could clearly notice when there was movement on the other half of this mattress.” – Jeremy
Our testing team found that the Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress was about average at isolating motion.
The top layer of foam absorbs some vibrations, but the firm feel and bouncy coils contribute to a moderate “ripple effect.” In practice, this means that you can expect to feel some light movement if your bed partner is tossing and turning or getting in and out of bed.
For most people, this mattress has enough motion isolation to limit sleep disruptions. But light sleepers may prefer a mattress with a material better known for motion isolation (such as memory foam).
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
“Though it doesn’t have the contouring we usually associate with pressure relief, the Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress was great for me as a back sleeper because of the support it provided for my lumbar region.” – Brad
Our testing for pressure relief yielded mixed results, leading to an average rating for the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress.
On one hand, this mattress can feel too firm to many sleepers. It doesn’t closely conform to the body, which can result in pressure buildup around sensitive joints like the shoulders and hips, especially for side sleepers.
On the other hand, back and stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds often need a firmer, flatter mattress to reduce pressure and strain around the lower back.
Because of this, there was a split among our testers. Although this mattress doesn’t contour very closely, it can still be effective at helping certain sleepers maintain healthy spinal alignment.
Temperature Control
8
/ 10
“I stayed cool as a cucumber on this mattress. The temperature stayed steady, and I never felt like heat was being trapped around me. ” – Mary
During our tests, the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress earned praise for its temperature regulation. Even hot sleepers said they encountered barely any heat buildup during the night.
The firm sleeping surface kept our testers from sinking into the bed, which allowed plenty of cooling airflow over the skin. The gel-infused foam in the top layer is engineered to cut down on heat retention, and the coils permit ventilation that limits overheating.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
“One thing I really liked about the Raymour & Flanigan Mattress was how solid it felt around the edge. Having a sturdy perimeter really makes the mattress feel bigger.” – Brad
Whether they were sleeping or sitting on the bed to tie their shoes, our testers praised the edge support on the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress.
The support core includes metal coils that are reinforced around the edge. This thick layer is the foundation for the strong perimeter. On top of that, the firm foams are a check against sinkage. Combined, these materials keep the edge from collapsing beneath you.
Dependable edge support makes more of the mattress surface usable, and it is often a priority for people with a higher body weight or physical mobility limitations.
Ease of Movement
8
/ 10
“I tend to shift around in my sleep, moving between sleeping positions. On this mattress, I encountered almost no resistance, so I could more quickly settle in and get back to sleep.” – Mary
In our testing, the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress got above-average ratings for ease of movement.
The mattress offers light contouring around the body, and there’s a moderate amount of bounce from the coils. These characteristics reduce barriers to movement and keep you from feeling stuck in place.
Not surprisingly, the hybrid sleepers on our team spoke highly of this mattress and how it allowed them to adjust their sleeping position.
Durability
7.5
/ 10
Based on our stress testing and reports from field testers, our team concluded that the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress offers solid durability.
Like most well-built hybrid mattresses, it should last for at least five to seven years. With its firmer foams, it may hold up better than softer models that may be prone to premature sagging.

The mattress cover is made with smooth and moisture-wicking polyester. Inside, the top layer is made with polyfoam that gently cradles pressure points but doesn’t contour closely or “hug” the body. The foam is infused with a gel designed to prevent excess heat retention.
The second layer is made with firm polyfoam. This denser layer bolsters the sleep surface and keeps your body from sinking into the mattress.
The third and fourth layers are transition polyfoams. They give the mattress stability and dependable support, especially for heavier areas like the abdomen and lumbar spine. The layer right above the coils is made with a slightly softer foam to better absorb the movement of the coils without making the mattress feel too rigid.
The support core consists of pocketed innerspring coils. The thick coils are built to move independently of one another. As a result, the mattress can better adapt to your body if you adjust your sleep position during the night. At the same time, pocketed coils transfer less motion, so the mattress surface doesn’t feel like a trampoline. The final layer is made with dense polyfoam that acts as a stabilizing base for the coils.
